REACTION to Godsmack - Drum Battle - Sully Erna vs Shannon Larkin 

Great job educating on the different hand drums! Thank you! I've seen them live at a festival in San Antonio, River City Rockfest. The drum battle was amazing.

That is some badass drumming. Makes me want to start drumming even more!

Your town has a shop called Emerald Tablet which is a metaphysical/ hippie shop. They frequently have drum circles in from of their shop in the summer, and at our semiannual Waterfire art festival the have some guests from Africa play with them.

So fascinating, thank you for explaining about the drums Sully was using.

Guitarist here, I know pretty how to build a guitar from scratch. Drums, however, are totally lost on me, so I really appreciate the in-depth explanation on the types of hand-percussion on display and what their place in the music is. Thank you bro

I've seen them 3 times live. 2 of the times they performed this. But the 1st time was probably the best live show I've ever been to. This is when Tommy was still their drummer. Mushroomhead opened up, got the crowd so pumped, and Godsmack came out and just killed it live. Front row against the barricade, bruised ribs, lost voice, no hearing the next day, no regrets haha Sully is a great multi instrumentalist. A lot of people don't know that Sully recorded the drums for their debut album, and wrote most of the drums for their first two albums. Also, Sully's solo Avalon album has some wicked tracks on it. Sinners Prayer is such a vibe tune.

On RU-vid there is a video called just "a or the" Tip with Sully and Aaron Lewis that has Sully using his acoustic guitar like a Cajon...such a talent that can use just about anything to make music!

That was such a great explanation of Sully's drumming at the beginning. Really helped to understand the sounds being produced.

Its also amazing how he can play like 10 different instruments , bass, guitar, piano and many others

Just wanted to say thank you for your explanation of the his playing and types of drums. I had seen this before but your discussion about the different types was really interesting. Have me a new perspective when watching this again. Great reaction.

According to Sully, the only improvised parts are their individual fills. They leave that up to the moment. Some nights it works without an issue, and some nights it goes off the wire.

When they played in the Netherlands, opening for Metallica, they also played the drum battle during their set. It's one thing to see this on a DVD, but it's a whole other thing to witness such musical greatness first hand. I had never seen anything like that before. It was amazing!

I got to see this live, front row, with Shannon right in front of me, at Hampton Beach Casino in NH 5 years ago. One of the best shows I've seen.

I'm not much of a music nerd, (I listen to what sounds good without analyzing) but I am gaining appreciation from your descriptions, especially from your drumming perspective.

Well, damn, I find even more congruence with you. I started with doumbek, playing accompaniment for a belly dance troupe, picked up a djembe, ashiko, cajon, several frame drums, dude are you my long-lost twin?

Back in 96 when they had Tommy Stewart as their drummer, I was working a show which they played. They had set up Sully's hand drums up in front of the drum riser. Eventually by the end of "drum solo, more duo" Sully was wrapped basically around Tommy, with both of them attacking the kit.

Would love to see you do more Godsmack. The band is awesome. songs like Voodoo, When Legends Rise, Unforgettable, Under your Scars, Straight Out Of Line, Cryin' Like A Bitch!!, Awake & Rocky Mountain Way are all great songs and I'm sure you will love it

One of the first bands I saw live. I don't even remember who was headlining but Godsmack made them forgettable.. Rob Zombie maybe?. They did dueling drums but for 10 minutes were trading sticks in the air. Easily the best stage performance of sheer talent I've ever seen. When the pit STOPS and is in awe of what they're doing it's a credit to the musicians.

The song they are playing is a song 'get up get out' off their first album. Also sully was in a band early 90s called Strip mind he was the drummer for that band and he has long hair which is weird

Got to see them do this twice. Impressive every time. Last time was Sept 2019 and I was 2 rows back in front of Shannon’s kit and Sully’s kit got stuck on the spin when they were supposed to be facing each other, so he was facing backwards when they finished.

Takes me back to high school, playing congas for the perc feature of the football halftime shows. Best time ever, except how badly my palms hurt. Not the best heads, I was told. Sully rocks this. 🤘✌️

This took weeks of practice to work out. It was many sleepless nights thinking this out. The audience has no idea how hard it is to put on a pro show. I am a guitarist and have played some big venues and it is all hard work. No time for getting stoned or being a drunk. When you do this on the pro level, You have to be sharp and ready. Drugs and alcohol would be a bad idea when doing a pro tour.

They did this live when I first saw them in 2004 when they opened for Metallica. So cool!

It’s not the size of your ZIL-BEL what matters.......it’s how you use it ........😂

I don't necessarily think they couldn't have played Tom Sawyer at tempo, but as you pointed out they were ending the song, plus it fits with better with the previous songs at the slower tempo. My personal sense of tempo is not as refined as yours, but I'm not sure they're too far off as is (my guess is somewhere around 120 bpm instead).

Thanks for posting this great Drum-Battle! Btw: you might consider doing a reaction on Leo Morachiolis cover of Gangnam style. It might even cure you with your fear of the bunny, or it might send you in weeks of nightmares
