The thing about snow in Germany: Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have the Alps, which mostly shield them from the warmer southern air streams and simultaneously catch all the rising humidity which then forms clouds and thus it snows there a lot. Northern Germany on the other hand is mostly flat and has the gulf stream supplying it with warm air.

To explain all of the memes. Maybe people can help me figure out the ones I dont get: 1. Munich, together with Stuttgart and Berlin are known for extremely high rent prices. 2. Saarland has the same stereotype as Alabama for example 3. Abitur is the highest degree you can get in german school. The difficulty of the exams varies from state to state but Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are know to have the hardest ones. 4. Bremen is one of the three city states, along with Hamburg and Bremen. 5. Regensburg literally means "Rain Castle" 6. Cologne is know to be an LGBTQ+ friendly city. 7. Frankfurt is known for its high crime rate. 8. Sachsen is known for having a lot of far-right extremism, and also far-left people, but mostly far-right. 9. The CDU/CSU has a habit of being corrupt. 10. I dont get the Bochum one. 11. Apparently theres higher alcoholism in rural germany, but I dont get that one (maybe because I live in rural germany) 12. Lower-Saxony together with Brandenburg is known for being empty. 13. The northern Germany one I also dont get, but maybe because people tend to start long conversations if you just greet them there? 14. This one I dont get. 15. Hannover is located in the middle of nowhere 16. Stuttgart is the seat of Mercedes Benz and Porsche and some other big companies and is known for being full of wealthy people. Stuttgarters are also known to buy up real estate in Berlin, which is why Berliners tend to hate people from Stuttgart. 17. We have multiple cities called Frankfurt, the only difference being the River, in this case the Oder running through them. 18. You got the HSV one. 19. People from Brandenburg tend to move to Berlin, because there is literally nothing in Brandenburg besides the city of Potsdam. 20. Konstanz is a city near the Bodensee, which is very close to Switzerland. 21. You got the one with Sylt. Its the favourite Vacation spot of rich people in germany. 22. Self-explanatory. 23. East Germany is known for having only few opportunities to get a good job/education and the people there have lower living standards as the rest of Germany, so people, especially younger ones tend to leave. 24. Self-explanatory- 25 and 26: In my experience its the other way around and the south gets only little snow, but this may be subjective. 27. German trains are very very very bad and always arrive late 28. Rundfunkbeitrag or GEZ is a fee every german has to pay. It finances some of our Television Channels. 29. You got that one. 30. You got that one. 31. You got that one. 32. Dont get that one. 33. After finishing their Abitur, girls in germany often go to Australia to do "Work and Travel". They work on strawberry fields and other farms there. Some people also go to Africa. 34. Thüringen is empty. 35. I dont get this one. 36. Wohnungsbesichtigung is, when you look at an apartment before signing a rent contract. The housing market and rent situation in berlin is so bad, that on the day of the viewing, hundreds of people interested in the apartment show up. 37. Bubatz is a meme word for weed. 38 and 39: These are very specific and show german memes of (typically far right) protesters against vaccination or some other stuff. 40. This guy is called "der Kapitän" or "The captain" and he is from a very famous documentary about the Penny Supermarket on Hamburgs Reeperbahn. I strongly advise you to watch it someday, it is very funny/entertaining. 41. Dont get this one, but the clip is from a documentary about kids with ADHD. 42. This is a famous german meme about a guy asking for drugs ("Haben wir noch Peps?"). 43. Famous german video where an Audi family car completely demolishes a Porsche during a race on the Autobahn. 44. This is famous german RU-vidr Tanzverbot 45. This is famous german RU-vidr Exsl95 46. Same meme as 11. 47. This is infamous german RU-vidr Drachenlord aka Rainer Winkler, who is a internationally know lolcow. He is kind of like Chris Chan in the US if you know that one. 48. A german meme from one of our many scripted reality shows. 49. A german meme from a streamer, noticing that his chicken nuggets that are in the oven are burning up. 50. This is Hector Panzer, a friend of german RU-vidr Adlersson who tends to drink a lot on ex. 51. This is a swiss anime youtuber whos name I forgot. The meme is the same as 8. Hope that helps.

to clarify on the "weed in bavaria" meme. bavaria has the harshest punishments for weed (or any drug besides alcohol and tobacco), while places like berlin it's like a slap on the wrist and it being taken away (if it's a sensible personal use amount) while in bavaria you can go to jail just for some crumbs, being tested positive for marijuana and sometimes even just having paraphernalia.

Most of them are correct :D Some details on some of the memes: Saarland is the German Alabama in terms of joking about siblings liking each others too much. Abitur is the highest education degree you can get from schools and allows studying at universities. The difficulty varies depending on the state you live in and Bavaria is known for the hardest Abitur in Germany. Frankfurt am Main is German Wall Street or German New York City (because of the few skyscrapers which are generally super rare in Germany) while Frankfurt an der Oder is a small town near the Polish border. The get confused a lot which is why they contain the nearby rivers as a clarification. Sachsen is German Florida in terms of politics. Bavaria is known for its conservative and pedantic population and politics. Its very clerical but got the most financial power across all states in Germany which is one of the reasons they feel imperior to other states especially to the former eastern part. They love to get drunk but faint when they see someone with a funny cigarette.

As for the alcohol thing: I'm running a small cinema in a small town in rural Saxony-Anhalt. Some time ago, a terrible car accident happened where a young man was killed, and alcohol was involved. The mom of one of the other persons in the car rented our cinema for the young folks to come together after the burial, she had edited a video with pictures of the deceased and their friends - as people do, so far so good. BUT: the first picture showed the deceased boy with his mates in a car all of them had bottles in their hands, and so it went on, and guess what: those kids had nothing to do but chugging away beer and Cuba Libres to see their friend off who died as roadkill because of DUI. That's how things go here.

Sachsen is pronounced like "Sacksen" with emphasis on "Sack". 😜 (Joke aside, say it like "Saxson".) ... And Sachsen is a bit known to be right winged lately. They were left winged before that. It's one of our "new" federal states struggling to feel representated after reunion. Not to exuse the shift, I'm against AfD and right wing ideology. But things don't come out of thin air and IMHO it should be adressed to allow a shift again. (And of course not everyone thinks like that there, but we only ever hear the loud ones.)

Cannabis legalization was approved yesterday in the Bundestag and now has to be confirmed by the Bundesrat, the second chamber of legislature, as well so that cannabis can be legalized from April on here in Germany. It then will be generally legal to possess cannabis from the age of 18 (the consumption itself was never illegal anyway, but the legal argument has often been that you can only consume cannabis if you are in possession of it). You also would be allowed then to carry 25 grams of cannabis in public and grow 3 of your own plants at home.

Consuming weed (or called Bubatz as a joke) in Germany is legal, while possession, buying, selling, accepting (for free) and giving (for free) is illegal. It's kind of weird. Currently we have a limit, varying from state to state, on how much you can have with you you without being prosecuted, but it is still up to the individual police officer if they file a case or not. In Berlin the limit is 15 grams, but I once was caught with half a joint (the other half was consumed already) and the police stopped me, searched me, filed a case and afterwards the case was settled by giving me a pamphlet about how Cannabis can ruin your life and with numbers and addresses to where to get help. All for just 0.4 grams (yes, they weighted it haha) But at the moment our federal politicians are trying to legalize it. If everything goes through, April 1st will be the day weed will be legalized in Germany.

The Rundfunkbeitrag is like a tax for public radio and television (and some youtube channels). *But*. it's not a tax, it's a bill you get from a company, which used to be known as GEZ. They are notorious for overbilling, adding massive fees for missed payments, and especially, tracking people down who are trying to avoid paying. They can just get your contact info from registration offices, and they are typically the first ones to know when you're moving. Historically, they would knock on your door and check if you had a TV or a radio, at least they don't do that anymore. You don't mess with the GEZ. Also, definitely try Mettbrötchen. first step to german citizenship.

5:54 just a few days ago the last voting was held. Consumption will be legal for all of Germany starting on the first of april. In Bavaria the fines were generally the highest, because the CSU was a very strong political party there and they strongly opposed the legalisation. However they lost a lot of their voters in recent years because of corruption scandals and general unhappiness in the population, so they are not included in the current government, which is why the legalisation was possible.

Grew up on the bank of the river Ruhr, moved to Münster, then to Bonn, then back to Münster. I remember seeing enough snow to build a snowman and all that from my childhood but at least since I moved away (and it feels like more so over time), snow days have been few and far between. Especially for my 4-5 years in Bonn, I only saw a bit of sludge for a couple days total. There was that freak blizzard a couple years back when people were skiing on the streets in Münster but the exact same happened in Madrid, so that isn't saying much. The reason that there is more snow in the South is the higher elevation closer to the Alps. There is also more snow in the East bc it's further inland, which causes more extreme temperature differences (to a degree). For example, there was snow in Berlin when our current government came into office. Meanwhile in Bonn, there was no snow and while it was cold, you could still walk to a nearby shop in a t-shirt if it wasn't too far. Think maybe a couple degrees centigrade.

But when getting older, having a family and small kids, many move from Berlin to Brandenburg, because no one wants to raise a kid in a big city. They searching for the nature and peace of Brandenburg 🌳🌳🚣 🌳🌳, where kids can play on the street where you don't have to worried about violence and drugs on schools.( I guess, it happens here too, but not that often.) 🌳

This video hinted alot at videos many germans know and put them into context with common stereotypes for different regions. Some of the clips are definitly worth watching. The antivaxxer woman for example is from a documentation from SPIEGEL TV on youtube about the antivaxxer/esoterik/right szene during covid.

The reaction and overall mentality concerning weed highly depends on the area. The government isn't particularly fond of it anywhere, though it is being legalized after public pressure, but the people often don't have a problem with it. Living close to Berlin, I certainly can't say it seems taboo there. I've had someone yell across the street that we could buy from them on one occasion and I know a lot of people who smoke weed personally. Culturally, especially among young people, it's not that big of a deal.

Northern Germany has less snow because it's closer to the ocean. That means the summers aren't as warm and the winters aren't as cold. The southern climate is more continental.

Sachsen or in english Saxony is historically the region with the poeple most loyal to the state and being mostly rural known to have many right wing people. in the 90s after the reunification and the last years again, Saxony is one of if not the state with the highest votes for right wing parties. I think you have seen one of those Pegida marches in another video as well, that is also a saxony thing. Obviously not everyone from Saxony is like that but know how it is. And to the point of weed, from April 1st weed will be legal to own and consume in germany but I also know people from Bavaria or Munich specifically that got stopped by the police just because they looked like they would smoke weed. Everything I have ever heard or read about Bavarian police is absolutely awful but of course again like most media there is a heavy negativity bias so you should take that with a grain of salt. The thing about the youth trying to leave eastern germany is because still 35 years after the reunification there is still a gab in income, infrastructure and such. Wohnungsbesichtigung in Berlin means apartment viewing according to google translate, it is when you check out an apartment before renting and there is way too few of those here especially in Berlin. The Heute Show had a segment on that last year that we have several hundred thousand apartments less than we would need, Maybe check that if you find it. And the drinking thing, well there is just nothing to do in rural areas so you start drinking early

The one with Bavarian state police and weed is true and mostly politically motivated. There was a news article a few months ago that uncovered that one of the governing parties promised a local police chief a modernized station in exchange for speaking out against the legalization. Also, they need it for themselves. Check out the "SOKO Nightlife" case from Munich.

5:55 it's decriminalised in the way that you can smoke it. The dumb part is you are not allowed to posses it. So technically if you can smoke it without possessing it you are good to go. If you are posses it to when smoking you have a problem. (spoiler you are) Until some years ago you could be arrested for any amount even if you are holding it in you hand while smoking. Now you are allowed to posses enough to make a joint. (0.5g) I think people got in trouble because they found crumbs/debris of it in carpet, collected it all and it was enough to get them charged with possession. Also you are not allowed to drive and it's considered a DUI if you have any THC in you blood. Going so far as the theoretical part of the drivers license has a question about this. Where they consider it unsafe to drive if you consumed any cannabis/marijuana in the time of 1 month. (since technically THC can remain in the body for that long)

Actually Weed is about to get decriminalized in this week (at least they say so...) and this will get in affect on the 1st of April But there are still doubts that it will really happen, they were postponing for a long time. Right now it's illegal, some Police care about it, some don't and if you only have a few grams for personal use some DAs wont process, but some will (at least in Bavaria) So you are not safe at all when having weed with you.

You've probably heard this many times before, but Germany and Bavaria are two different things. While both are located in the same republic, that's about where the similarities end. Bavaria strives to make it clear in every way possible that they are not Germany and do not want to belong to it. They speak German only as a terrible dialect, they have their own parties, their own laws, a culture that leans more towards Austria than Germany, and they refuse to participate in anything that is German. For example, they refuse to participate in the energy transition because the fine citizens might be disturbed by the sight of wind turbines. They don't even wear the same police uniforms but opt for the Austrian cut of Europolice clothing. And some memes allude to this fact as well. With a right-wing conservative party reigning in Bavaria and making the rules, they practically ban everything in Bavaria. Or at least they try to.

In the last 30 years the winter climate changed quite heavily here so the winter/snow meme is not really that correct anymore. But basically the southern parts are way higher altitude and therefore colder. But in recent years the south has been extremely warm and you'd only really get snow in the foothills of the alps. And the north is often under the influence of cold artic/russian winds from the east while the south often still get's the warmer influence from the atlantic.

Don't mix up the letter combination 'sch', which is pronounced like you try to do, and 'chs' like in Sachsen, which makes it sound like 'ks'. In this case it's similar to the english pronounciation of saxon, just change the o to an e 😉

Southern germany is an "anomaly" in terms of temperature. Youll get closer to Italy / medit. Sea so it gets warmer climate, but also colder winters due to going up in elevation ( because of the Alps ) And do NOT try Mett/raw pork anywhere but germany. Its a specialty there and because of it, their meatstandards are incredibly high. If you consume it immediatly/the day you bought it fresh, its 99.999999999999% safe. And with onions, pepper and salt its extremely delicious.

Sachsen (pronounced like zuxan, in english called Saxony) and Thüringen (Thuringia) are pretty much the most right-leaning states in germany, they are where the at best right-populist, at worst fascist party AfD is most successfull. Interestingly though, the party "Die Linke" (literally "the left") is the strongest party in Thuringia despite barely having any success in any other state. The frankfurt one is easily explained, there's two cities named Frankfurt, and when people want to specify which one they mean they add the river the city is next to, so there's Frankfurt am Main, and there's Frankfurt an der Oder. If you were to buy a plane ticket to Frankfurt, you'd end up in Frankfurt (Main), which is both larger and more well known than Frankfurt (oder). When a person from Frankfurt (Oder) says they are from frankfurt, almost everyone assumes they mean the other one, which I imagine must be pretty hard.
