I had a girlfriend once who couldn't comprehend the fact that I was able to just 'do nothing' and enjoy that.

@@Celisar1 You can't really over-analyze Loriot, because he was such a perfectionist with his work that he really thought about it himself. He wasn't like "Oh, this is funny, let's do it." He was a fastidious artisan, over-analyzing himself every word and movement. He didn't make 34 takes of Evelyn Hamann stepping in dog turd in a totally non slapstick way until it looked incidental without having it thought through why she has to step in it in this scene.

"Ich sitze nur" - in that voice - is also often used in my marriage.

We more often use "Früher war mehr Lametta!" ;)

Same here, Jodeldiplom, and Weihnachten bei Hoppenstedts. Not really translatable into English, unfortunately. Also, the "Advent" poem about the forest warden's wife preparing for Christmas. Ah, and the "groundbreaking" Bundestag speech. Also, I thought the literature reading in "Pappa Ante Portas" (Krawehl krawehl...) was absolute genius. And of course the "the talk" scene "Männer sind. Und Frauen auch. Überleg dir das mal!"). Again, hard or impossible to translate.

Really, Loriot as well? Who the heck back then did NOT play in "Der längste Tag"? 😂

@@marrykurie48 Haha, that's true as well :D I only had long time relationships but only because I never argued much. I was always the one who said "Yes my love, you're right" instead of saying "Nope, I have a different opinion" because I feared her hatred against me. And yes, many of my relationshops were one sided.

@@marrykurie48 We're all different, I know quite a few people who couldn't live 24/7 with _anyone,_ simply because they need their personal space/time for themselves/whatever. Finding someone who is "built" the same way and isn't just okay with it, but enjoys such a relationship... I'd say that's marrying the exactly right person ☺

but you dont 'nervensäg' someone so to nag would likely be 'quängeln' or something. to be honest i cant think of word thats as fitting as nagging.

@@vete6864 "to nag someone" would be "jemanden nerven". So the verb is literally a homonym with "Nerven" (eng. "nerves"). Alternatively there is "jemandem auf die Nerven gehen" which also includes someone attacking your nerves :)

I would translate it as "nörgeln".

Nörgeln fits good. Also possible "Kritteln" (e.g. Er hat immer etwas zu an ihr zu kritteln / He always has something to critizise about her) oder "Mäkeln/Herummäkeln" (Sie hat immer etwas an ihm herum zu mäkeln / She's always nagging(picking on) him).

Oh yes, "Ein Herz und eine Seele" gives a deep insight of the Germany in the 70s.

"nörgeln" is intransitive. nörgeln is annoying criticising, but the whole construction "to nag someone to do something" just doesn't work with that word.

Thats true. But it is hard to find a single word which fits all meanings. "to nag someone" can be translated as "an jemandem herumnörgeln". I am not sure if the sentence "to nag someone to do something" works as is in german. My guess is you have to split it into two sentences and structure it different to achieve a meaning which at least is similar to some extend...

I would agree, however has this movie ever been translated into English? If so, I'd like to hear the English translation of the poetry scene.

To be fair, in this sketch, the husband is always very open and transparent about his needs, while the wife is constantly trying to control and even gaslight him.

Because the Husband (Party A) is not open and transparent about his needs nor is his Wife (Party B) trying to control and gaslight him. However, she is also failing at communication. Allow me to explain: Party A is sitting in the chair. Party B appears to be busy in another room, then notices through the slightly opened door that Party A is sitting in the chair, his head propped up with his hand. Party B asks "Hermann, what are you doing?". Party A answers "Nothing". Both parties have just exchanged a single sentence each and the communication has already broken down. Party B had assumed at a glance, that Party A was bored. Instead of saying "Are you okay? You look bored." and therefore testing her presumption and opening herself up for a correction if her presumption was false, she decided to hide her presumption and asked a question that could only reinforce her presumptions. Party A, assuming this was a factual question answered "Nothing", which reinforces Party B's presumption, instead of thinking about his communication and what his communication could mean to Party B. Party B obviously felt the need of initiating a conversation. A more complete response therefore could have been: "I just enjoy sitting and doing nothing for a change. I am a bit exhausted from work and would like to have a little bit of time for myself to relax." This would allay Party B's Concern of "A is bored" and also signify that "A is just tired from work, he would like to rest and have time for himself." Depending on the relationship and how communication usually works and what each partner needs, Party A could also add "But If you would like, we can have a chat about our day later", therefore additionally signaling "Though I would rather be by myself and do not want to talk now, I would like to get together and talk later." This pattern of miscommunication is basically repeating itself over and over in this skit. And I know this is not a satisfying answer but both parties in this skit need to work hard on their communication. We are each responsible for our communication, specifically as to how our words are percieved by the reciever. I would be happy to hear your opion and if there is a part in the skit that you would like to address specifically if you are interested in a discussion about this topic 🙂
