I always thought this song felt really heavily Danny Elfman -inspired. About Emppu being one of the most selfless guitarists out there, can't help but agree. I read somewhere once that Emppu almost quit the band after the Wishmaster album (this was a period where the entire band came extremely close to breaking up, because their sudden success took a toll on them), because he felt like he couldn't contribute enough to the songwriting. Eventually he was told by his friend (might've actually been his guitar teacher, can't remember) to basically suck it up and was convinced that leaving the band would be a big mistake and something he'd regret for the rest of his life. I guess this guy must've really seen the success in the horizon for the band, and Emppu certainly must've taken those words to heart, because his loyalty to the band hasn't faltered since, and he's remained there through the thick and thin. Can't always be easy, cause he's basically there just as a piece of the puzzle, and hasn't necessarily got to fulfill all his dreams as a guitarist and musician. So yeah, the guy is definitely an extremely selfless musician. But also just a loyal friend you'd want to have your back. In fact, I believe he was the only person in the entire band who apparently never had a single problem with Tarja or Anette, either. That's saying something, considering they had problems even with management and touring staff.

This is one of my favourite ever songs from Nightwish. This album really struck that line between being metal and being theatrical. Anette and Marko don't just sing, they play different characters and the instruments compliment them incredibly.

It's definitely worth checking out some of Anette's studio work with Nightwish. It is her great misfortune to be forever compared with Tarja and Floor. If she had lived and worked entirely in the U.S., focusing on mainstream rock or pop, she would be considered a superstar. Next to her, most of the big American pop stars sound like hamsters.

@hazelangus
@hazelangus 3 года назад
Yep. She's actually really good, unfortunately she wasn't up to the job that was asked of her. The touring schedule was crazy, which Floor can cope with but I think Anette really struggled. Anette's a pop-rock woman, so singing in metal shows night after night for months on end - perhaps that was the problem, or one of them. Tarja was doing it since she was a very young woman so she was fine, did brilliantly although it would have been a huge challenge to keep her opera voice in good shape for the non-stop tours. Tours with a break and the non-stop tours are different. 27 shows in 29 days for example - that's a gruelling schedule, particularly for a vocalist. Two weeks of gigs and then a week off - well, that's something else. Floor's lived and breathed metal since she was a teenager and was with After Forever from the age of what, 16? 17? I think she thrives on it!
@hazelangus
@hazelangus 3 года назад
@@VulpesChama Floor's also not perfect, which nobody likes to think and people who say so tend to get shouted down. Yes she's a mighty vocal phenomenon, but she's also human. I've heard her flub plenty of notes, it's just a normal thing that happens in live performances.

Although I would probably like to hear her sing Eva and Meadows of Heaven live, just out of curiosity. I fell in love with Nightwish with the original lineup, then I thought it was all over with all the drama after Tarja got fired, Well, now i'm in Paradise with Floor and the current lineup, but the Imaginaerum album is one of my favorite albums, Anette shines on that album and there are some songs including this one where only her voice it's what adds the magic and personality, like a feeling of belonging and that's just because of Annette (that "something" Tuomas does with every singer), the Imaginaerum movie is amazing as well!. Awww, Chase, we love you too! The carnival/circus + Hocus Pocus mash-up vibe this song gives makes it one of my favorites, and it doesn't get enough love, in my opinion. Also, this is definitely an "Annette" song. Her performance is key to the feel of the song, and it's really hard to make it your own while still keeping that same essence of the song. Once you've had your fill of Imaginaerum reactions, whether you've cover the whole album with reactions or are just ready to take it all in at once, the film is absolutely the way to go. It adds a whole additional layer to the music that you just can't get with the songs by themselves.

Considered by many to be the pinnacle of Annette's live performances with NW ... honestly, Slow Love Slow gives her a bit more chances to shine with what she has.

Sweet Lord, I forgot how much I love this song! So brilliant! And Anette just shines in it. One of my absolute favourites from her time with them! So much fun! And just look at them, how much fun they all had on stage! :D Great reaction, I love it when you have so much fun with these! It is really informative, thank you for your hard work, sir! :)

When I first discovered Nightwish, I was just beginning to learn how to play a keyboard. Tuomas is a HUGE inspiration for me and I agree, not enough people talk about how much of a genius he is when it comes to the mastery of his instrument and the placement of it in the songs. For me, the keyboard pretty much ties the threads of every Nightwish song. It's always there and my ears are always searching that one sound that guides me through whatever he composed. It's like an invite to glimpse at his creation process, at the soul of every song. I have no idea how much that makes sense, it's very hard for me to put it in words.

This is one of NW's most under rated songs. It's definitely top 5 for me. This is one of those rare moments where the song sounds better on the studio version, but still good.

This song is fun and have evil carnival feel. I think that Annette was her best in soft and melodic songs. If you want hear her more recommend Meadows of heaven, Turn loose Mermaids or live: Slow Love Slow, live Montreux Jazz Festival 2012. Unfortunately there is no much high quality videos live with Anette.

You can just buy a ticket to a Nightwish concert close to Tuomas and just look at him behind his keyboards doing his own whole show :) so much worth it...he is just not standing behind there...look at The Phantom Of The Opera in Milano Italy 2004 or 2005, he can barely stand behind the keyboards...

One thing I don't think I've ever seen mentioned is how much influence there is from Danny Elfman in the creepy-circus chord progression during the Marco interlude. That is a classic Elfman sound and it was an absolutely brilliant choice for that part of the song by Tuomas.

i wonder if Anette Olzon missed her calling by not getting into musical theatre. Her best performances were arguably in Scaretale and Slow, Love, Slow. The vocal lines aren't particularly difficult, but the personality she put into them was through the roof.

Side note, the most incredible part of the video may be the fact the CO2 jets during the reprise of the into were louder than the band.

Sorry I missed the premiere, but, you know, Thumbs Up for Chase! Anette walks off stage and Tuomas just busts out a polka. I love this song, it's such a "Wtf?" song. Anette is well suited to the theatrical nature of this song. Her best song with Nightwish (imo) is "Eva," but there's not a video for it. This is "Eva" from the official Nightwish YT channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KyB3w1ANk2A.html

I think it's a shame that Nightwish never did a proper DVD with Anette. She had her moments. But I guess Anette is at her best on studio versions of songs such as Meadows Of Heaven and Turn Loose The Mermaids. They represent a completely different side of Nightwish and they're actually my personal favorites from her era.

Piia Linqvist is right. The album is fantastic and the movie is captivating! I always imagined Harley Quinn singing this. It's just the type of mind scrambled, chaotic, calculated thing that would be in a mind like that. Annette really shines in this song. Probably my favorite song with her.

Your analysis sparked my interest and introduced me to nightwish. A band that is all of the things I love to listen to from the symphony to thick guitar riffs amazing drum beats to the fantastic vocals. I've also loved your other videos which has opened me up to more bands I have never heard of and I love it so thank you for getting music back in my system.

The whole album is fantastic and for sure one of their very, very best. And an album that is absolutely most effective when listened to cover to cover. A beautiful ride, ending up in the extended album version of Song of myself including a beautiful spoken piece, followed by the final track, the instrumental Imaginaerum... pure bliss. So consider something specisl for that whole album. Perhaps a review, after having first reacted to the "main" songs on the album? As for Anette at her own best, her first album, Dark Passion Play, has some "less metal" songs that display how beautifully she is able to sing.
