I've never watched the Pentatonix version of this live before and they all sound amazing! Matt really took Avi's part and made it his own. So well done!
This is an example of their diversity. When the bass solo (second verse) is being done by Matt, that is Scott singing bass in his place. They did this too on the original video even though they could have background tracked the bass when Avi (the original bass) sang his solo. They really try to keep it the same as what they will do live.
I saw Leonard Cohen in Las Vegas during one of his last tours. He was very appreciative of the musicians he worked with. Partway through the concert he'd introduce each one to the audience and give a little of their background. Yes, Hallelujah sounded like this performance, too.
Glad you've done this comparison, and know the raw original. Leonard Cohen did more than his share of contributing timeless songs; and I feel Pentatonix has done him justice.
Love this. Cohen has a unique vocal style. Loved hearing it by the composer and then this group. Enjoyed how Matt pays homage to Avi in parts and then, in the PTX way, made it his own. Tremendous live performance.
I can understand Leonard being Jewish, skepticism of faith other than the Old testament or the Torah. But who broke his heart? So much hurt, and emotion. A song for the ages. And yes Kevin the beatboxer does use his hands and foot stomps for the bass and snare. He also is classically trained on the cello. [Shallow cover] He also has a wonderful voice.[ Amazing Grace, Mary Did You Know] Again a nice revue thanks
Hey T, if he’s not dead please reach out to him! I mean that with the upmost respect I hope you know. So when I started this channel so we could mend some fences with some of our friends. So again if it’s an issue of passing on and they’re still here I will talk to that old friend :-)
I always think that the songwriter has the most authentic version, but Cohen’s and Bob Dylan’s voices are acquired taste. I love PTX and how they arrange their songs and their voices are beautiful. I was one of the screaming people in the audience when PTX recorded this last year.
Nice! Thanks and I agree although I tend to like singers who aren’t necessarily well liked I would add Neil Young to that group, and I own everything he’s ever done. To each his own I guess
Sometimes Kevin stomps on a drum pad if the arrangement is complicated. In most cases he stomps just for motion and dramatic affect. For this video all the percussion was coming from his mouth.
nice reaction jeff... acapella groups like pentatonix and home free are definitely pretty cool. the "hallelujah" version from jeff buckley was one of the first ones that really popularized this incredible song created by cohen... i really appreciate most all of them but for some reason my overall favorite is from rufus wainwright. it just has so much emotion. here is a live version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LQK4YfiPj1Q.html ... no need to react, just enjoy and have good week
