The song is partially about DMT. Humans produce this substance naturally in our brains. "How can they make illegal, something we all make in our brain" The song's title references the myth that the world rests upon the back of a giant turtle, which begs the question, "what is the turtle standing on"? On another turtle naturally. But what does that turtle stand on? It is turtles all the way down.... The point he is trying to make in the song is that these drugs can sometimes reveal secrets about the world, but in the end the quest for knowledge is infinite and in the end you are better off focusing on being a loving kind person. "Love is the only thing that ever saved my life."

About the 3rd time I listened to the song I finally had to look up the turtle reference. I have listened a couple hundred times since then.

He just dropped a brand new album 4 days ago. It’s a bluegrass themed album with his old songs. Amazing album and seems so true and authentic, not forced. Check out “All The Pretty Colors” or “Rail Road Of Sin”. Honestly anything rocks on that new album. Cheers amigo 🍻

Turtles all the way down is for sure a reference. I do not know the origin but I've seen it in books and movies. The idea is that the world is on the back of 4 giant elephants riding on the back of an even bigger turtle. And at this point in the book I'm thinking of the person hearing this asks what's the turtle riding on and the story teller says it's turtles all the way down. Might have been in disc world books by terry pratchett. Where he got the idea is probably the subject of a google search.

I also love the song "The promise" from Simpson, the same vibe as Turtles. Then there are all the more typical country songs from Sturgill that I love. In short: Sturgill is the man.

I'm new to your channel, and I'm really enjoying your honest approach , and enthusiasm. Sturgill is one of the best out there today, and he leads me to an artist you haven't reacted to yet, and since he was a hero for sturgill, and recently passed from covid 19 complications, I hope you see this, and look into John prine. Any song will do to start, as I don't think the man ever wrote a bad song, but if I had to point to where to start, look at his first album, every single song on it is a complete classic. Keep up the good work.

Sound & Fury is an album that goes completely against the grain for country music. It is his most experimental album and loaded with grooves and great songs. Check it out.

The first album is classic country. The second one (this one) is influenced by Pink Floyd and such. The third one is influenced by his love of Otis Redding. The fourth one is influenced by metal and the Cars and ZZ Top. And then he decided to do a couple of bluegrass albums of his own past material.

Such a hard song to break down because he’s a little all over the place. Overall I think he’s telling about all of his life experiences (including psychedelics) and what they have taught him about life. Such a great song, super unique and genre bending. Anything from Sturgill would be great. I love All Around You and Life of Sin.

Luckily got to see Sturgill live just before lockdown and he was great. He is quite strange but hugely talented. Each of his 5 albums has a different style. If you like this song you should hear his version of this on his new bluegrass album (rerecorded songs from his back catalogue and recordes with bluegrass band) it sounds totally different. My favourite of his Pan Bowl and Sea Stories.

Each of Colonel Simpson's albums are very different from each other. This one was pretty psychedelic...but there are solid rock/country bangers on there as well. "Living The Dream", "Long White Line", and "Life of Sin" are fantastic. All of those are covered on his recent bluegrass album (which is in the conversation for my favorite album of 2020) in a very different context.

His new album is a masterpiece. Apparently the songs on his first two albums were all written as bluegrass songs, but the label wouldn't let him do it. They said he needed the big country sound. And he did that and it sounded great. He maintains that he does not like the first two albums because he was told how to produce them. So that's why he just cut the new album Cuttin' Grass. He did them the way they are intended. And he's got another "Stugrass" album on the way! I would check out the stuff on his new album next like "I Dont Mind" or "All The Pretty Colors" or "Breakers Roar". Its my favorite record in the last several years. You will love.

"I Dont Mind" is a song from many moons ago when he was in a band called Sunday Valley, and it was more of a indie rock kind of vibe. Its a great song cut as bluegrass, and its also his wife's favorite song. When you have the time, Google Sturgill Simpson open letter for Cuttin Grass. He just talks about why he made the album its a pretty good read.

Sturgill’s next album will be a return to his roots in Bluegrass. When it comes out take a look! Bluegrass and Oldtime music is the roots of country along with blues.

The song is about insight, empathy and love. It takes doing some drugs for most people to free the ego and remove the scum of childhood indoctrination.

Not DMT. U said it affects everyone different, like they all have different experiences. Not with DMT. There was a study dun were some scientists gave some people (volunteers) a certain amount of DMT so they hallucinated to a point they left this reality. The scientists were all shocked to find out these people all reported the same hallucinations. And all reported feeling a kind of happiness or freedom since there experience. All of them!
