Jefferson wasn't a hypocrite. He wanted to abolish slavery. He spent his entire career trying to abolish slavery. He couldn't free his slaves because it was illegal to do so in his state. When he wrote the declaration of independence the longest grievance he wrote was about the fact that king George would not allow the American colonies to end slavery. That clause was cited or of the declaration because everything in it had to be unanimously approved by all 13 colonies and 3 voted against the anti slavery clause. Also, there is no proof one way or the other that Jefferson had children with one of his slaves. But even if he had, there is no evidence that it wasn't consensual.

@KurNorock

@@ryangarmham2521 It can only cut deep if it's true. It wasn't true, so it's shit. Like if somebody made fun of me with some witty line about me being short. But I'm not short. I'm 6'3. I'm well above average height. So an insult about me being short, no matter how well written or clever it might be, is a stupid insult. Also, it isn't even very creative. Not nearly as creative as "Call you miss-carriage". As a matter of fact, I've heard very similar jokes before. And no, just because Thomas Jefferson was a powerful man doesn't mean he was above the law or could do whatever he wanted. He spend his life fighting against that sort of tyranny. He wrote the declaration of independence beginning with "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal." It wouldn't make any sense for him to then go and say, "Well, obviously, I'm more equal that everybody else, so I can do whatever I want just by virtue of who I am!"

But Jefferson could’ve at least wanted to contain it. But no. He campaigned for Missouri to be a slave state in the Missouri compromise, six years before he died. This state actually very briefly ripped the scale is states towards the slave side, 12 to 11, before Maine became a state and the balance was restored. If Jefferson and one other man who’s name I forget didn’t campaign for this to happen, Missouri probably would’ve been free, and none of this mess would’ve happened. And if outlawing it entirely is too much, why not impose restrictions, or make it more humane, by maybe allowing pay, education, ect.? The man seems like he has justification but he doesn’t. And last time I checked, having 6-4 children with a woman who you owned while she was 14, beginning while your wife was still alive and then keeping her in bondage doesn’t seem to root for the guy.

I was always torn over this battle, because I liked how Jefferson had multiple points of attack in Fredericks ego and his lack of success and such, while Frederick only really talked about one thing, for two whole verses. But then, on a separate note, what else would Frederick talk about? It is in his character to harp on that one issue.

To be fair to Jefferson, historians have never been able to prove he fathered children with his slaves. Jefferson also attempted to end slavery and after he couldn’t, he predicted the civil war would occur over slavery. Douglas also loved the U.S. Constitution, and rightfully so, believed slavery was outlawed with the proper contextual interpretation without the need for a new amendment. His views remind me quite a bit of Justice Clarence Thomas.

Actually, that's a common misconception Curtis. The Majority of the founders, Jefferson included began making unprecedented efforts to end slavery from the very founding of the nation. Starting with overseeing the creation of the first abolition society in Philadelphia in 1775, and outright banning slavery in Vermont in 1777, not to mention that they ended many branches of the slave trade immediately that had been known for their cruelty. Yes, many of them held slaves, but, whether that was out of necessity, needing to keep up with the economic power of other nations in it's early days, or if it was just out of hypocrisy (something that seems very unlikely, reading their writings), they're STILL the reason that slavery was ended in the first place.

Granted the “baby mama” was the half-sister of his wife who had passed away before they started any form of relationship if I remember correctly. And she was only about 1/4 or so black because it wasn’t anything new in her and her sister’s family to have children with slaves. And she requested that upon his death their children be freed, which he did do. It’s like George Washington. He only had slaves because they belonged to Martha. When he passed away he freed all of them (I believe over 100+). Many of the Founding Fathers were against slavery, but as Jefferson pointed out, they were stuck. The government after independence barely had any money, and trade (considering we haven’t had the Industrial Revolution which greatly revitalized the North economically) needed to be maintained. Never mind fear of a civil war right after barely scraping a victory. My family fought the British, but less than 100 years later were fighting for the Confederacy and owning slaves in Georgia. One of the cousins still lives on the land (oddly enough the woman who wrote “The Color Purple” was born there and my great-aunt used to drive her to school, so I guess we tried to make up for it), and a few years ago my uncle discovered some our ancestors had illegitimate children with slaves, but doesn’t want to contact them because it seems awkward :/ But I have no idea when obtained slaves, and I’m not sure even my uncle knows, especially as it was maternal side that owned slaves and paternal that fought in the 1700s.

Honestly I hate this one. They go after Jefferson about slavery even though he was strongly anti slavery. He didn't free his slaves only because he legally couldn't. Washington was able to free his slaves at the time of his death, but by the time Jefferson died, that "loophole" had been closed. And Frederick Douglas did absolutely nothing in the battle but call Jefferson a racist. He didn't say anything about himself. If I didn't already know anything about him, I wouldn't have a clue why he's even famous. He was also very misrepresented in this battle. He knew very well that the 3/5 compromise was an anti slavery clause and he spent much of his time teaching people the benefits of it. From a purely "rap battle effectiveness" point of view, Jefferson won easily. Douglas' raps were all about Jefferson being a racist and nothing about himself. From a historical perspective, they got both figures completely wrong. The paint Jefferson out to be a hypocrite, which he wasn't, and they make Douglas out to be just a typical angry black man, bordering on modern SJW levels of identity politics. The whole thing is shit as far as I'm concerned.

I know this comment is 4 years old, but I'm going to reply anyway. The idea that Jefferson couldn't free his slaves is a myth. Virginia law allowed him to free them at any time, including in his will. Jefferson couldn't do it without going bankrupt. When he died, his slaves were sold to settle his debts. The facts in this rap battle were spot on. And yes, the stuff Douglass said was taken from his writings. Not quotes, obviously, but he wrote about the meaning of the 4th of July to black people, etc.

I mean, Frederick Douglas' whole thing revolved around slavery. Dude broke free from the system and built himself up in a way no black man (or at least very few) did before him. I get that it's tough to hear people "harping on" about racial slavery, but that was the entire issue with the guy. Then there's the strange situation with Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the U.S. who wanted freedom from a tyrant (the King) - and may have hated the entire slavery angle, but never freed his slaves, especially the one he had the affair with, all to protect his finances. Like of course Douglas would latch onto that.

My issue with this is that it was weighted so Douglass would win. Jefferson's first verse was FIRE, and Douglass ignored EVERY point he made - and then Jefferson gave up and let himself be walked over. This was a modern writer infusing Jefferson with a modern sense of white guilt to make a statement. Is it a bad statement? No, absolutely not. But when both sides of a rap battle are written by the same people, and they give preferential treatment to one party, that is NOT a rap battle. The guy who does Douglass was GREAT, don't get me wrong, but this was as much a political stunt as the Bruce Jenner vs Bruce Banner rap. I feel that this one is wasted potential.

@@Angelone1 this is how you lose a debate/argument. Dragging in completely irrelevant and unnecessary correspondence. Disagreeing with us being a Christian nation does not equate to acceptance of pedophilia/slave trade ffs. I don't have a dog in this fight, and was only here to maybe see more clarification on who the guy was, but felt the need to point this out. I see a lot of people do this shit, and all it does is make people doubt the claims you originally were making since it feels extremely weak to have to fly to half assed character assassinations in a weak attempt to defend yourself.

While Douglass definately won this in my opinion, I am glad they let Jefferson defend himself. It's easy to say what should have been done when you don't consider the situation at the time. Unfortunately, at the time, the slave trade was so ingrained into the economy that just axing it entirely would risk financial collapse. And if you wanna know what completely upending an economy looks like, take a loot at Russia and former Soviet bloc countries immediately after the union dissolved when they went from controlled economy to the free market almost over night.

Jefferson did not father kids with a slave. It's a baseless rumor. In fact, it's far more likely that the father was a mentally-damaged relative of Jefferson's (can't remember if it was his brother or what).

I wonder why Jefferson never freed Sally Hemings. He let to of his kids with her 'escape' before he died, and set the other two surviving children free in his will, and all the other slaves Jefferson ever set free were all Sally's family...so why not her? While he was alive I could understand him not freeing her, since he likely feared how it'd look if such a well known figure was in a romantic relationship with a freed woman of colour, and that could have also put unwanted attention on his kids, but why not free her in his will? That's what puzzles me. At least Jefferson's daughter did free Sally, and she got to spend a decade living with her kids as a free woman before passing away.

It was never proven there were Thomas Jefferson's kids, but likely were a member of the Jefferson family. People seem to forget he had a brother as well. But anyway that minor detail aside, due to the laws of the state of Virginia Thomas Jefferson legally couldn't free his slaves. After Washington doing so, there was a change in the state law preventing that very thing from happening which Jefferson couldn't do anything about with the separation of federal and state law in the Constitution that Jefferson himself had fought for to prevent a strong centralized government from taking over.

@thechatteringclown
@thechatteringclown 5 лет назад
@@redpenshinobi while it amuses me that you seem to completely read into my comment whatever you want, it's not even funny how obviously biased this one was. The purpose of a battle is to have people fight each other, to go up against each other by trading insults and either trying to put oneselve up or your opponent down, but throughout the whole second verse Jefferson didn't even try to fight. The entire thing was just him appologizing and trying to play of events. Try watching any of the other battles, not a single other rapper in any other battle does that, because guess what, that isn't how battling's supposed to function or what it is about. Sorry, but if you can't see how skewered this is, you must be blind.
