We became foster parents and when I was handed a baby with bruises I felt gutted. We finally got to adopt the child and between my husband, my biological children and aunts and uncles this child has blossomed and is the light of our lives. This song kills something inside of me.
As you can tell by the public service announcement at the end of this song it is a way to open peoples eyes to the trauma. The children go through. She does have quite a few songs that are very emotional like this. Independence Day is one of them, and God‘s will is another. I have to say that God‘s will is one of my favorite songs of hers. She also has a song called I love you, this one’s for the girls, etc. She has an absolutely gorgeous voice and a beautiful heart, and she tries to sing songs that make a difference. Martina is a wonderful singer (even better in person). I highly recommend "Independence Day" for a different type of situation- very powerful and a different take...it's one of my favorites! "This one's for the girls" is a really fun one and is another favorite!
I appreciate the three of you. As a child, I grew up in a beyond abusive family. When I was around 6 years old, my mother and step-father tried to kill me. They threw me naked out in the snow. God sent my angel to rescue me. My aunt, on my step-father's side, who lived many miles away, just happened to drive by the house and saw me in the snow. She took me to her house and sent me to live with my grandparents. My mother and stepfather are very sadistic The reason that they beat, tourchered, and abused me was because I was born male. My mother never wanted a male child. I forgave them some time ago. There were other times but I will not go into those. I am now 61 years old. God has always looked out for me and stepped in to prevent them from killing me. This song is very hard for me to hear and see the video. It is very personal to me. Thanks for having a heart. There are children out there right now that will be killed by the ones that are supposed to love them. If you suspect that this is occurring in a child's life please intervine. You may save a life.

This is such a beautiful song and everytime I watch/listen to it I always cry. I've seen many reaction videos to it and I appreciate your style for this as well as that you realized the little boy was her Angel right away unlike other reactions that missed that.

I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s and CPS was pretty much unheard of, many of us were physically, mentally,sexually abused, being hit with whatever was closest , with my three younger brothers it was dads belt, mom was emotionally and mentally abusive, when dad was hitting us mom sat on the couch smiling
My older brother and I were born, survived and ESCAPED our abusive parents. NO one who saw our parents abuse us, who saw the blood, who saw the marks on our bodies, NONE of them cared enough to step in and help us. For those of you who went through abuse, and those of you who are right now going through abuse, MAYBE these two songs MIGHT be of some comfort. 1)For King & Country “God Only Knows”(Official Music Video), and 2)MercyMe “The Hurt and The Healer”(Official Music Video).

Martina isn't all depressing or heavy subjects, but neither does she shy away from important subjects. Another two of hers that do are Independence Day and Broken Wing. But she has a lot of good uplifting songs. But for another artist for you: I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack. (a very good, loving, and uplifting song)

Im almost 50yrs old & when I was about 10yrs old 1 of my classmates was getting abused. I immediately told my dad who was a police officer. Her mom was also being abused & with my dads help he was arrested & put away for a long time. Her mom & her moved 2,000 miles away to her grandparents.
The video/song is the true story of what happened to Martina's niece. The name on the grave, Angela Carter, is the little girl killed by her own mother.

This song was to call attention to the child abuse situation in our country and worldwide. It was VERY controversial when it came out but did go on to win many awards. As a survivor of horrible child abuse I want to stress, we CANNOT just pretend it doesn't exist. At the end of the video are the numbers and website for the National Child Abuse Hotline. If you see it or suspect it, report it. Do not stay silent ... please.
Martina has a special talent for bringing topics that people don't like to talk about the forefront and making us confront them. And she is amazing for it. Her discography covers domestic assault, child abuse, rape, and everything in between. Broken Wing is another great song of hers. Bring the tissues because it is just as sad as this one.

Just to be clear; Martina didn’t write this song and it has nothing to do with her sister or her niece. It was written by Stephanie Bentley and Rob Crosby. Martina just sings it.
It doesn't matter who wrote it she knew what she was singing and put her all into it. And because of that it became not only a good song but a good video. A story that needs to be seen and heard.
The headstone in the video is the real headstone of Martine's neice who was murdered by Martine's sister at the age of 7. It is implied that the boy is the the ghost of a child who was killed from abuse who comes to the girl before she passes to show her friendship for the first time in her short life.
I am sorry I can not comprehend how that teacher could see those bruises and not say something and now she has to live with the knowledge she could have potentially saved her and the neighbors have a special place in hell waiting forthem
