Voiceplay are called the 'theatre kids' of a capella. Hoist the Colours, My Mother Told Me, and the Dragonborn Comes are more theatrical; their Disney covers slightly less so but with some great surprises. Geoff (bass) and Layne (beatbox) do the arrangements, and Eli (Ellee, tenor) has been doing the lighting. Geoff has his own channel where he uses his 5 octave range to clone himself for the harmonies - 16 Tons and Misty Mountains Cold are amazing.

Geoff Castallucci. I just discovered Voiceplay about a month and a half ago, and partly because it was the first Acapella group I listened to and the fact I LOVE theatricality and humor, they are my favorite. Pentatonix and Home Free are also fantastic, it just comes down to what 'flavor' you tend to like. Home Free is going to be too country for some people, and some people find Pentatonix too formal, while others revel in their perfection. And some people find Voiceplay's theatricality off-putting. I love Geoff's solo work also, (tagged as Geoff Castellucci/Low Bass Singer) because it shows off his range and his arranging skills. He can be silly and playful or break your heart with a beautiful rendition. Most of Voiceplay's versions are arranged by Layne Stein (the beatboxer for Voiceplay) or Geoff. I would recommend Voiceplay's Hoist the Colors, Little Mermaid Medley, Moana Medley or Wicked Medley if you're into theatricality and musical theater. Their "Queen in 5 Minutes" is also theatrical, a story being told rather than just being a group lined up and singing bits of Queen songs. If you've been caught up in the Encanto wave, their version of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is another one that combines genuine musical complexity with offbeat and unexpected humor. If you just want some joyous humor accompanied by great singing, and a bit of 'dad-dancing', their "Boy Bands in 5 Minutes" is also great fun.

I like a few of Pentatonix's songs but I generally find them to be like the pop genre of a capella, which isn't my thing. Just to give my two cents on why they don't really hit home with me overall :)

Loved it! So fun watching a new reactor begin to come to grips with VP. Their most recent is "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from Encanto, and they totally knocked it out of the park. So funny! I don't know if Geoff is the lowest, but - for my tastes - his tone is the best. I just love the resonance and tone of his voice. Geoff also has a private channel that's full of amazing stuff - Shenandoah is an American folk song that he does an amazing version of, and you get a real sense of the beauty of his voice. Like most good professional singers, he alters the tone of his voice to suit the performance, and in Shenandoah it's gorgeous... pure butter at the top and silk at the bottom.

You are one of the few reactors who noticed Geoff's riff in the background, you can see him dojng it, but there is so much going on that most people miss it. Voiceplay never fail to impress with a full production in nearly all their videos. Lighting, costume, set and make-up as well as getting into character for their singing parts. Check out 'The Greatest Showman Medley' to see how far they go, the whole set was built by them for this video in a studio co-owned by Layne, the beatboxer.

bass: Geoff (pronounced Jeff) beatboxer: Layne (guy on the right with the glowing nose in this video) tenor: Eli (pronounced Elly) (bald guy) ^those 3 you will see in every video. VP has had some lineup changes over the years, so the remaining 2 singers will be a bit confusing to keep up with. their first baritone is Tony, you will see him in their oldest videos. he got replaced with J.None (black guy) for a few years before he left to join the navy. their current baritone is Cesar (hispanic guy) their high tenor Earl (big buff guy, sometimes with, sometimes without, beard) he was in this video with the beard, left 2 years ago. they have not found a replacement for him yet, so they collaborate with featured guest singers since then. as for lowest bass, both Geoff and Tim have a similar range, Geoff just has a different timbre and resonance, and uses different techniques for the lower notes. it might make him sound lower than Tim, but they hit the same notes. Geoff has a slightly lower chest voice, and Tim can go slightly higher, but other than that they have the same range. and both are awesome :-)

Both Geoff Castellucci and Tim Foust have a five octave range. I would highly recommend several of the Voiceplay performances that have already been suggested such as "My Mother Told Me", "Hoist the Colors", "We Don't Talk About Bruno" as well as "Wicked Medley", "Queen in 5 Minutes", and "Just Sing" along with Geoff Castellucci's 'solo' 😉 performances. You just can't go wrong with these guys.

I loved your reaction! The sheer joy of listening to artistry really showed. Others have recommended a lot of their more theatrical pieces. One that you might really enjoy is the little mermaid based on Disney’s movie. Layne , the beatboxer arranged that one and he likes to push Geoff into areas that may not be in his comfort zone. This time he cast Geoff as Ursula the Seawitch! There is one note during Poor unfortunate souls where he goes down four octaves (I believe it’s from D4 to D1) in one word. Other less theatrical items might be some of their medleys from Broadway shows such as Wicked. They also do more of a straight up singing. One of my favorites has always been Elvis Presley‘s I can’t help falling in love with you. You really get to hear their incredible harmonies. As a treat, the beat boxer has a very short time where he actually sings and he has a lovely baritone. One that really shows off their ability to transition from one song to another is their boy bands in five minutes. Having a son who grew up in the 90s I was reluctant to listen to this. But they don’t limit themselves just to the 90s and I recognized all the songs. Subscribing in hopes that you continue your journey with VoicePlay and with Geoff . Since you mentioned his subterranean deep down in the earth notes, you should know that on his personal channel he has now done three songs about mining. Two are American folk type songs, 16 tons and big bad John. But by far my favorite is his cover of Far over the Misty Mountains which is the dwarves song from the Hobbit just before entering the mines of Moria. When Geoff is on his solo channel he does use instrumentation since he’s all by himself. But he likes to arrange four part harmonies and will frequently record all four parts. Then to give a little visual interest he will film four times with himself, often wearing different outfits and interacting with his other selves. It’s kind of like split personality in the best possible case.

Speaking of the a cappella basses, I think Avi, Tim and Geoff are all fairly close in their range. The difference is in the timbre of their voices, and the techniques they use to achieve the lower notes. Tim Foust is known for his use of growl technique, whereas Geoff utilizes subharmonics (a technique where he sings a fundamental note, say a G2, but utilizing vocal fry he engages his false folds so that they vibrate at half the speed of his vocal folds, producing a sound that is exactly one octave lower and thus creating a G1 note that we hear). Subharmonics have allowed Geoff to reach some incredibly low notes- his lowest recorded note is a B0-- but his chest range is still amazingly low. He can also reach up to around an A5, I think, but what I find remarkable is the richness and fullness of his tone regardless of where he is in his range. Check out his solo channel; you'll come away with a better idea of his voice from bass to tenor. Also, he arranges all his own music, and half of VoicePlay's. Layne Stein (the vocal percussionist) arranges the other half; it was Layne who created the vocal arrangement for Oogie Boogie's Song, and who convinced Geoff to go for the bigger ending with that impressive subharmonic E1.
@grischad20
@grischad20 2 года назад
geoff's subharmonic don't use his false fold. there're many ways to do subharmonics, as it's essentially just singing 2 notes as once. geoff's purely use true vocal folds

VoicePlay is very theatrical, making a lot of their videos akin to mini-musicals. This song is from The Nightmare Before Christmas and they've done two more from that movie: This is Halloween and What's This. You might also want to check out The Phantom of the Opera (feat. Rachel Potter). VoicePlay and Home Free got together for a great video called Zombies vs Hillbillies - Survivor. They were both in season 4 of The Sing-Off and I think that collab was for that but never used. Avi Kaplan joined Home Free for Ring of Fire. Geoff Castellucci has a lot of solo video which are usually...well, let's just say they're Geoffx4. Monster Mash is a lot of fun. His latest is his rendition of Big Bad John. Both of them have a little surprise in the filming that make the song so much better.

There is a whole video that someone put together of reactors reacting to that last run of Geoff’s. His range is actually similar to Avi and Tim, although I think he has gone a little lower lately. But they use different techniques to reach those low notes. I prefer Geoff’s more lyrical approach. Geoff and Tim are friends. VoicePlay and Home Free appeared on the Sing-Off together and toured together afterwards. Other videos usually feature each member of the group. A few of my favorites are Queen in 5 Minutes, the Little Mermaid Medley, and Hoist the Colours. But everyone (including me) seems to be currently fixated on their We Don’t Talk About Bruno. They have so much fun with that one, keeping largely on to the original while still making it their own. It’s just pure joy!

I think there are four songs they covered from Nightmare Before Christmas; This is Halloween, What's This? , Kidnap The Sandy Claus, and The Oogie Boogie Song. The NIghtmare Before Christmas is a cartoon film by Tim Burton, not my sort of thing so never seen it, but VoicePlay have made other songs form the film as well. Yes it Geoff Castellucci there - bass with VoicePlay and he has his own channel doing low bass covers. You'll enjoy anything they do. Loved your reaction and hope you do more of them. People reckon that Tim and Geoff have a very similar range but for me Geoff's tone is smoother and more soothing to listen to. To hear a lot of his range try his Blackbird, (the Beatles' song).

I didn’t think I would enjoy the movie either, but it is worth a watch just to experience the genius that is Danny Elfman who wrote the music. And the creativity of Tim Burton. Some of it is hauntingly beautiful. I’m not generally a fan of Tim Burtons work - a little too odd for me, but he is a (slightly strange) genius. Oddly this song is the one I didn’t like. It just fell flat. But, as usual, VP fixed it.
