This is our Reaction to Why Poland is Finally Becoming a Rich Country 🇵🇱
For most of its history, Poland has been a nation plagued by poverty. Located in the heart of Europe, between Germany and Russia, it has often been a battleground. However, the past 30 years have brought significant changes. Poland's economy has emerged as one of the best performers in Europe, and some estimates suggest it could be wealthier than the UK by 2030. Additionally, Poland now boasts one of Europe's strongest armies. How did this transformation occur?

I would say it is in the middle. Poland definitely isn't rich by Western Standard, but it also isn't really poor anymore. Generally things vastly improved in last years. Though it depend on the region. Some still are behind. Generally I find that many commentators who were in Poland, were here something like decade ago and think that things stay the same (or straight are Russian bots). But yes. Truth is in the middle. Many of those videos tend to bit over-hype Poland, especially as there is still a lot of work to be done. But at the same time a lot of criticism is biased.

1.The beginning of the second minute of the film is ahistorical. When Hitler ruled Germany and Stalin ruled the USSR, Poland looked different. This is what modern Poland looks like. It should be remembered that Poland, like most countries in Europe, does not have permanent borders and its shape and appearance have changed over time. The Pole has had this shape since the end of World War II. For example, I will tell you that the cities that you have already visited in Poland, i.e. Szczecin and Wrocław, were Polish only at the beginning of our history and became Polish again in 1945. For most of their history, they belonged to other countries. Lviv, which is now a Ukrainian city, has a longer historical affiliation with Poland than the two previously mentioned cities. 2. Yes, you are right, Leszek Balcerowicz was hated by many. Even today he claims that we are developing because he left, but this is not true, we owe the development of Poland to his reforms. People usually describe the world through their emotions and not through knowledge, which they often lack.
@PiotrJaser

Poles compare their standard of living to neighboring Germany, Sweden or the UK - from this point of view, Poland is not rich. Socialism delayed Poland's development by several dozen years, but it was not a completely wasted time - people had access to free education, many industrial plants were built - the problem was its isolation from world markets, technological lag, poor quality of products and sick principles of socialist economics. However, despite these problems, Poland did not start from scratch, it had and still has the potential for rapid growth, which is supported by the diligence, inventiveness and individualistic nature of Poles.

I would say that Poland achieved decent balance between Socialism and Capitalism. That actually is what help them avoid many trappings of rampant capitalism. While also not falling in trap of stagnant socialism.

@krzysztofprusakowski3386 Not really. A single person working in, let's say, a warehouse, can't afford to rent a flat. Only the room in the shared house. My opinion is based on observation in the UK and Sweden. I am not saying that everywhere in Poland is ok, but living standards are systematically rising. The minimum wage in Poland now is more or less like the minimum wage in the UK 10-12 years ago. So, the distance between Poland and the UK is ca. 10 years. By the way, my salary in my first job in Poland in 1987 was worth ca. 10 USD per month.

@krzysztofprusakowski3386 And you writhe that from Minsk perhaps? Poland actually has unusually low level of differences between reach and poor (especially claim of destructioin of middle class in post-comunist state is hilarious). That from one side slow down investments, but from another create potent consumer market. What actually is the reason why Poland is decent and Russia is poor.

I think the history of Europe, especially central Europe, needs to be looked at from a longer time perspective. The relative inclusiveness certainly most inclusive society from the 1400s through the late 1700s meant that Poland had developed a very strong basis for democracy. Of course, this has to be looked at in the light of respective contemporary times. This is one of the reasons why there were so many Jewish people that were Polish in Poland and why the Ashkenazi Jews developed so strongly in Poland (this includes half of Belarus and half of Ukraine since that was then Rzeczpospolita obojga narodow). In 1700s all the way through partitions Poland became too new ones and open to democratic ideas that eventually led to its demise through the three partitions. However, right before the partitions occurred the first constitution was declared and put forth in the whole continent. Coming back to the 14th through the late 1700s Poland was the power that actually had very successful military and successful territorial gains. During that time, a respect was developed between Poland and the Ottoman Empire, which is an anecdote resulted in the Ottoman Empire still keeping a seat at the table for the representative of Rzeczpospolita even during the times when Poland was not officially on the maps of Europe that is late 1700’s through early 20th century. It is primarily because of autocratic and I would say conformist societies of what is now Germany and Russia that Poland got wiped out and suffered great blows during that time, followed by especially Second World War. Even with all of these historical event occurring given a chance it’s amazing what the country had accomplished in the past 34 years. I think part of the big success of not becoming country controlled by oligarchs such as the case in Russia and somewhat in Germany it’s the fact that Poland has been an inclusive society since 1400. I think longer look at history is always very important as we tend as humans to repeat cycles be the 250 year cycles for empires and 80 year cycles for wars and changes. I think in today’s changing world, and especially the next six years they’re going to be full of turmoil Poland will remain the beacon of Hope and a country that the world areas can look up to.

Do 1999 roku. 1999 - 2024 - to kolejne 25 lat wolności. I rozwoju.

... because we Poles do not want to be poor. We don't want to be a laughing stock. We don't want to take anything from anyone or prove anything to anyone. Yes, we have adopted patterns from the "West", but on this basis we are building our own country using our own legally obtained raw materials and publicly available knowledge. Everything within the limits of law and reason. We do not beg for freedom. We fight for it.

Do I personally, as a Pole, think that it is better than 30 years ago? Absolutely! We have the second lowest unemployment in Europe (approx. 5.5%), after the Czech Republic (2.7%). The minimum salary is already higher than in Portugal or Greece. Huge amounts of money have gone and continue to go into building infrastructure that is new and functional. Public transport in cities is great - railway connections between cities and the province have been improved. Life is simply better, more comfortable and safer. After the dark 1990s, when we had gang wars, the police were subsidized and expanded, gangsters, if they didn't kill each other, went to prison and now we have 0.7 murders for every 100,000 inhabitants, which again puts us among the safest countries in the world (Canada, for example, has a percentage of 1.7). Education is at a good level, and most importantly, it is free (of course, there is a paid alternative in the form of private institutions from nurseries to universities). And what is probably most important - people have changed a lot; they became warmer and nicer to each other, social bonds, never too strong in Poland, began to tighten. Of course, Poland is not a paradise, but no country is. Personally, I regret the very strong political divisions and the quality of Polish politics in general, as well as the shallowness of a significant part of the Polish political class, but this is probably a global feature... Poles are complainers, and complaining is our national sport - we are really good at it :). Paradoxically, this is also an advantage, because complaining results in the need for improvement. So, for example, the public health service could be better, especially when it comes to more complicated health issues and the functioning of hospitals. We could follow Spain and even our neighbors the Czech Republic, where these matters are better managed. When we joined the EU in 2004, many people, approximately 2 million, went abroad to work. For some time now, we have had a rather opposite tendency - many are returning from emigration, for example due to Brexit; many, not only from poorer countries, e.g. Asian countries, but also from the West come to us, because foreign companies, even the most famous ones, open their branches and factories here. During the Soviet era, some satellite countries were managed better than others. Poland certainly belonged to the latter, but, for example, Czechoslovakia and especially Hungary - to the former. When you came from Poland to Hungary in the 1980s, you had the feeling that you had arrived in the West, to a rich country. Even before the outbreak of the war, many Ukrainians worked in Poland - in services or mainly in construction. There is even talk of about 2 million, so they are co-responsible for our development. Therefore, foreigners, today apart from Ukrainians, mainly people from Asia, have and will continue to contribute to the development of the country.

Argentyna nie wykorzystała swojej szansy, my tak. I owszem, dzięki Balcerowiczowi, jeśli chodzi o gospodarkę, i dzięki Skubiszewskiemu, jeśli chodzi o strategię. Nieoczekiwanie otworzyło się okno by szybciej wejść do NATO, skorzystano też z okazji by wejść do UE.

My generation born in the 1970s did this. We started our adult lives in the 1990s, so I can tell you what it was like. The most important thing is that we have a middle class, many small businesses, and because of the war in Ukraine, we fortunately have white immigrants who speak almost the same language. Entering the European Union and using EU funds helped a lot, but the basis of everything is a single Pole. The average Pole is more hard-working, more resourceful and more intelligent than the rest of the world. that's why the Russians hate us so much and the Germans constantly want to control us, I recommend watching the comedy - How I started World War 2. The main character in this film is 1000% Polish.

Overtaking UK...no way, here in Czechia, we hear this for 30 years that in next 10 years, we will overtake them, but we still have 1/3 or 1/4 salaries and the worst ratio salary/housing price in whole Europe. Who still believes that we will overtake them soon is fool. Ofcourse buying power when you compare salaries and prices can be better in Poland or Czechia in the future, but definitely not GPD per capita, maybe in next 30 years, but definitely not in 2030. 40 years of communism slowered us too much. But by all economic statistics, it looks like Poland will overtake Czechia soon in pretty much everything. We had advantage in 1989 and better starting position, because we already had pretty good economy before WWII and our country was not that much destroyed in WWII, but since 1989, we just surf on that "we are better" wave and we do nothing, while in Poland, they really work hard. 17:50 - Poland is not post soviet country, that's the reason why they are not dominated by oligarchs. Oligarchs are something typically Russian and Ukrainian, in not sivet former communist countries, we don't know this. Ofcourse there are billionares who are trying to put their fingers into politics, but actual oligarchs like they have in Ukraine or Russia? No, it's a cultural thing and it's something typically connected with eastern slavic countries. BTW, privatised companies are not always better, only reason is that you don't steal from state, but from your boss. A lot of owners put their relatives to leading positions, so they tolerate their stealing, in smaller or middle size companies, this is a standard, half of company just steals and relatives and friends of owner (who are bosses there) are trying to hide it or they don't even hide it, they just can when they are relatives of owner. When I hear from older people how it was during communism, it doesn't sound that different, everyone was stealing before 1989 and everyone is stealing even now. Here in Czechia, 90s privatisation is connected to the worst corruption scandals a lot of state property for just stolen or sold for ridiculously low money or just given to foreign (mostly German) owners because of corruption. Germans are very corrupt and give bribes to eveyone, only things Germans to better is how well they can pretend they follow laws. When they are in private, they act even more russian than russians. 😀 26:30 - amount of hours you spend in work doesn't mean you have better productivity, it's vice versa, France has one of the lowest amount of work hours in Europe, their productivity is much higher than Polish or Czech.

Hey, I'm watching you and learning English. I must admit that you have a lot of knowledge about Poland. I'm 27 years old, so I can say how life has changed over the last 20 years. From my own example. I can say that the change for the better is gigantic. 20 years ago, I spent my holidays in the countryside or with my grandmother in the nearby city. Currently I am able to visit 3, 4 European countries a year. I used to wait all year for the end of the year. My parents then took me to McDonald's as a reward. It was the only time we ate at the "restaurant". Now I could eat there every day. Throughout my childhood, I wore clothes from my older brother and cousins. There are plenty of such examples. Although it is worth noting that we are still a long way behind the standard of living in Western Europe. I will add that I am from Silesia. This region was the worst affected by the transformation into a capitalist economy. Due to the liquidation of heavy industry. Therefore, in the 1990s and 2000s it was one of the poorest regions. Today it is much better. I recommend visiting Katowice someday. Be sure to also see the Silesian Park. One of the largest parks in Europe. As for the film about history. I recommend the documentary "Karski and the Lords of Humanity". It's about the Polish James Bond who tried to save Jews from extermination. A very interesting character whose existence is known to few Poles.

I have visited many countries in the last 10 years, working for multinational businesses, when I travel on a bike in Poland, I see beautiful homes everywhere - the average house is way nicer than an average house in Germany, UK, the Netherlands, Italy, or the Czech Republic - there is no old money as in western Europe so there is still a lot to do to improve, but everything is changing rapidly. New entertainment facilities, hotels, and restaurants. Also people's comfort in life - is not improving as fast as in 2018-2021 but improves - you can not grow 8% every year for decades. Most people even if they are not super educated try their best and care for the environment. Some say that Balcerwicz sold our economy and made people poor - look around and say if your family lives worse than 30 years ago.

Some simplifications here, but in general Poland has developed fantastically over 35 years. And Poland is still developing rapidly. 10 years ago it was a different country, in 10 years it will be a different country. It is possible that in 10 or 15 years Poland will be one of the best places to live. Poland's biggest problem is demography, i.e. the shrinking population.

The early 90s, when we had to go thru the "shock therapy", it was a period of time when almost all people were so excited about the new freedom we have just gained that the inflation, unemployment, etc did not seem like a big problem, almost everyone understood that after 45 years of communism, we had to undergo some "painful operation" asap to reboot the whole engine of our economy and start over!

What this video ignores is the oppression that came with USSR. It wasn’t only economical - there was censorship, repression, governmental spies in basically every group (empolyees, student study groups, etc). It isn’t possible to grow economically when you feel controlled in every way, and when you cannot take the educational and professional path that you’d like to because at some point you did something that government didn’t like. My mum was told she won’t get to the best high school in town if she went to see the pope John Paul II instead of attending lessons this day. She couldn’t work on her PhD because those spots (as they automatically meant work - position at university) were kept for people from the city in which university was, and not for those from other towns.

"Poland was flooded with money from the West" Yes and no, because this money was an unfavorable loan with a high interest rate, and we also had to give up a small part of our sovereignty, and the money flowed out of the country anyway because we could only spend it in countries such as Germany, so they benefited the most from it, and even not they have paid war reparations to this day, which amount to about 1 of Germany's GDP, but the worst thing was the change in the development of the economy, Poland has the largest coal deposits in Europe (of very good quality, but it is said to be of poor quality), one of the largest deposits of silver in the world, copper and many others and we are not even allowed to conduct new discoveries and we have to go into green energy, prohibiting us from developing both at the same time, and on top of that, we were banned from nuclear power plants and we were the only country in Europe that did not have this power plant to this day. The history of Poland is the best history of the world but we still cannot learn about it, we had the most powerful army in the world, the Hussars, which did not lose a battle for 125 years, we defended Europe many times, e.g. from the Tatars, the Battle of Vienna, the Battle of Hodlov, 400 Poles versus 40,000 Tatars, victory Polish, 303 Squadron without which England would have fallen and that is the fact why we were spat at by them after saving their country. Was Sabaton 1 in 40, the Germans thought they had found the main base and it was a random unit that killed 40 Germans for one Pole and they lost only because they ran out of ammunition, we were always a country that helped, we were not an aggressor, we always defended ourselves, and we are also the only country that ruled Russia for 2-3 years and we voluntarily resigned, and Russia still celebrates the recovery of Moscow from the Poles every year. In fact, we created 1 constitution in the world called the Henrykowksie Articles and eventually 2 constitutions in the world. During the occupation, we also created 1 computer in the world but Russia forbade us and many others are impossible to describe. Oh and Poland win more battles than the Roman Empire

In great majority of cases the current Polish emigration consist of low skilled labour. These are the people that may perceive life in the West lucrative. Even the average level construction workers now can have a very good life in Poland. Let alone highly skilled professionals like medical doctors, engineers or programists. Cheap labour needs to put a bigger effort on their education or at least decent technical skills or emigrate to the West to take the jobs the locals are not excited about. Or stay here, compain about life and vote for populists. The bigger problem is the low savings rate here, We need a chenge in mentality here. Best regards to you!

The thing is, if you live in a place forgotten by God, you'll be earning pennies (minimum wage is currently around 1000 euro/month gross). But if you move to a bigger city (or work remotely) in good industries, like IT, you'll be earning 7000 euro/month and more. Just to clear things up - 12 years ago I was earning pennies, now I earn OVER 10x MORE (IT Industry). I hope you get my point.

Military even if proposed orders are contracted and materialize Poland will mayby reach top 5 in Europe. Economically there's close to no chance Poland will even get close to UK - that graph of projected GDP is nothing more than british propaganda again Tories. If such approch was true then Singapore would have worlds biggest economy and Nigeria will have couple bilions people in next few years. Poland is just a medicore EU country, which is good - with stable economy and somehow stable institutions, nothing more than that.

But honestly, are we better? We have Ukrainians, Romanains and Bulgars for the same purpose.

In Poland during Russian domination agrarian land was privately owned and there was vibrant privet industrial sector. Poland implemented this system circa 1948. China mimic this system that it is using today only after death of Mao. And your statement that poles could not afford fridges and TV is ambaracing. They would buy goods they didn't need and stand in lines literally for like 3 days so they could barter for something they need. Everybody had to work and would be pursued by milicja, delivered to workplace forcefully. Nobody was rich yet people somehow were able to build houses. Whith everything being state owned everyone was stealing as much as they could...

Jednak ogólna rdza, beznadzieja, gnuśność i dyktaturo-milicyjność sprowadza ten sentyment do parteru zabawnych wspomnień.

In 1989, the standard of living in Ukraine was higher than in Poland. If it were not for Balcerowicz, it would be similar 20 years later. Before 1989, people earned $20-$30 a month, and for a few thousand dollars you could build a house or buy an apartment (without going into the quality of the house or apartment). After Balcerowicz's reforms, both wages and prices (converted into dollars) began to increase, and for a few thousand dollars it was possible to buy only part of an apartment or house, less and less as the years passed, btw. Today, for a few thousand dollars you can buy one square meter in an apartment in a good location in Warsaw or Gdańsk. Those who returned from the West to Poland after Balcerowicz's reforms with several thousand dollars saved must have been very disappointed. They would be happy to go back to the same communist shit they left, where a few thousand dollars was a fortune. One can understand that some people still hold a grudge against Balcerowicz, who started to pull Poland out of this mess.

@@iwonapawluczuk7687 Yes, yes, in the years 1989-1991 the indicators were poor, and alcoholism and prostitution appeared in Poland, which did not exist before. And all because of Balcerowicz and Jews in the background. And daddy couldn't build a house for $5000 anymore. The transformation of sick communism into healthy capitalism should be painless, and those who were happy in the slightly smelly but warm communist swamp should be subsidized indefinitely, with money that everyone else was willing to pay for. Balcerowicz's critics miss the fact, that until 1989 Poland's main economic partners were the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries, and after 1989 trade between those countries practically broke down and the Soviet Union began to collapse.
