Katherine Magbanua immigrated from the Philippines at age 7 and grew up in South Florida. A graduate of U. Central Florida, she worked at various jobs as a receptionist at dental and dermatology practices, bartender, "bottle girl," and office worker at a realty office. She and Charlie Adelson, a wealthy periodontist, met when she was working as a receptionist at Sofi Dental in 2013, and the two began dating. Magbanua had 2 children with Sigfredo Garcia, the hitman who shot Dan Markel on 7/18/2014. Garcia was accompanied by his childhood friend Luis Rivera, who later became a witness for the State and made a deal. Dan Markel's ex-wife was Wendi Adelson, Charlie's younger sister who by all accounts desperately wanted to move from Tallahassee to south Florida, but their family court judge denied her request to relocate with their two young sons. Three days after Markel was shot, Wendi and the boys left Tallahassee with her parents, not contacting law enforcement again.
On April 19, 2016, law enforcement had an undercover agent pretend to be Luis Rivera's brother and approach Donna Adelson (Wendi and Charlie's mother), alluding to the murder of Dan Markel and demanding another $5000. Shortly thereafter, there were a flurry of communications between Donna and Charlie Adelson, and Charlie and Katie even though their relationship had ended soon after Markel's murder. On April 20, 2016, another agent followed Charlie and Katie to Dolce Vita, a casual gelato cafe on Collins Ave. which has since closed, where their conversation was secretly recorded.
Sigfredo Garcia and Magbanua have both been convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder and conspiracy to murder Dan Markel. Wendi and her mother Donna Adelson were named as co-conspirators by the State in a motion filed in the Magbanua case but have not been charged with any crime so far. Charlie Adelson was arrested on April 21, 2022 and will go on trial in late October 2023.
