I am looking forward (oh that's not the word I want but I can't think of one) to your videos mentioning the indigenous and poc topics. It happens too much in even America and England where crimes and murders involving poc are botched or don't even have effort put into solving. It's disgusting. Every person who's a victim of a terrible crime deserves justice and answers.
I am currently reading The Skin We're In and it is really interesting. 21 Things sounds like a really important read. I managed to read all of We Have Always Been Here for the readEHthon and really enjoyed it. It hit on so many important topics.
I read the Skin We’re In earlier this year and it was really informative and powerful. I live in Saskatchewan and I honestly hadn’t heard of 90% of the stories and events mentioned in the book. I’m really glad I read it but I’m angry at how ill informed I was before. Anyway, I love all your choices and I’m looking forward to your thoughts on all of them.
There a nonfiction novel called the Highway of Tears about the genocide of indigenous women in Canada. I also recommend looking into Danelle’s Hallan channel she has a couple of in depth videos on MMIW. I haven’t read the book yet, but I’m looking forward to picking it up once I get my hands on a copy.
Great reading list! I marked "The Skin We're In" and realized that I also have "We Have Always Been Here" as an e-book on my K. And I did not check the K for creating my reading list. But things can always be changed, ha. I threw out "The Glass Hotel" anyway after just a few pages when realizing it was not a Rainierbook. Good luck!
lol I've never heard of this readathon so when I saw this thumbnail I was thinking of it like "eh...meh..." so I'm like --what, you only read books that don't sound good to you?
Hey girl! Have you picked up From the Ashes? It’s also a Canadian non-fiction about a Métis man’s struggle through homelessness and addiction. It hits so close to home, since the author (Jesse Thistle) was homeless here in Ottawa and he goes into depth about homelessness in the city. It’s a hopeful story in the end. I would 10000% recommend it!
Love your green hair! "21 Things..." is on Scribd in the UK and is on my list to check out during the readathon. I know hardly anything about Canadian history as it's not something that's even touched on in schools in the UK so I'm looking to rectify that and will be reading mostly Canadian books all month.
I’m going to be reading In the Skin We’re In for this as well. Empire of Wild is great and it does have a loving relationship in it. Samra Habib’s book is also 👍🏻.
Super grateful for the resources! We've studied the Indian Act in history class and it's definitely an important topic for sure, super glad to see this book on your TBR! Missing and murdered indigenous girls and women is something very near and dear to me personally, so I'm so glad to hear you are addressing the situation!
