This is so true omg. As someone who has self harmed and survived multiple suicide attempts, the romanticization of depression and self harm really pisses me the fuck off. Missing 8 days of school because you were in a mental hospital is not romantic. Trust me.

I have seen some instances in which fanfictions have handled mental illness/self harm/suicide delicately and treat the subject with respect to readers who may be going through similar things, although many do, unfortunately, seem to shoehorn it in simply to make a character 'interesting' or make the plot more dramatic. It's a right shame, since art in any form has the ability to break down social stigma and open up a dialogue surrounding today's issues

Honestly I'm thinking burn this all with fire but hey

With fanfiction, if the filth doesn't get you, the cringe will.

Wattpad is alright if you look at like poetry, horror, and most of all the other genres. But fanfic can also not be extremely dirty, make the main character be suicidal, have the plot go by to quickly or drag along, or be badly written. There are definitely some good writers and stories on the site, it just seems not as popular for some reason.
