yessss!!! i loved the mysterious case of the alperton angels!! so glad you enjoyed it! from her other books, I felt like The Appeal had a few debut-ey elements to it, but The Twyford Code is SO successful and one of my favourite twists ever!
Janice Hallett is my all time favorite mystery author. When people say she’s a modern day Agatha Christie they are spot on. The Twyford Code hit every one of my favorite things in a mystery. I think it might be my favorite mystery ever. And The Appeal is great too. I always order her books when they come out in the U.K. and then listen to the audiobook when it comes out here a year later. Any. Enough fangirling lol.
Just finished Alperton Angels and it was very interesting for me because I LOVED The Appeal, but Appeal is actually a lot... sillier? More lighthearted? The tone is just not as serious, so I was taken aback by how serious Alperton Angels felt. But nonetheless I was once again in awe of how much Hallet is able to do with so little words at a time. Please read Appeal because it's actually more humorous and chill, read if you want something fast paced.
I loved the Alperton Angels too. I feel like so many thrillers lately seem to be the same ideas and tropes over and over, it was so fun to read something so completely different and original.
If you want some other crime books with mixed media then you can check out True Crime Story, Night Film and Murder in the Family, as well as Janice’s other books
Really enjoyed this reading vlog Ashley -- thank you. I loved Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone -- it was a 5 star last year for me -- so I am excited to get to the sequel. I will hold my expectations in check a bit now and see what I make of it. Janice Hallett is now one of my all time favourites (I love mystery / crime). I have read all three of her books and her Novella. The Appeal was actually my personal favourite and a 5 star for me -- it is in some ways a very British book though so know that going in. The subject is much lighter than Alperton Angels -- but it is still so well told, well plotted and so well brought together - and just so much fun really. I love what she is doing with the mystery genre. Alperton was in second place for me -- still excellent though. The Twyford Code is different mixed media again -- based on sound recordings -- when you read it do the audio along side the text since accents and British slang do play a role. There is a great twist with that one too. Her new one The Examiner comes out in August this year (at least here in the UK) and it will be a buy and read immediately for me. I am excited for you to read her other books and hope you choose to vlog those too.
I’m so excited for The Examiner! I’m in the U.S. and the company I always bought British books from went out of business. 😞 I’m not sure where to order from now without paying a ton for shipping but I’ll still order it!
I also think The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels is genius. Absolutely loved that book and Hallet's fresh take on the genre. It's my favorite of hers, but I've enjoyed all her books. I think I would appreciate The Appeal more now that I understand her style. The Christmas Appeal is also a fun little novella, but don't read that before the main book. I can't wait for her next release, and hope there isn't a big gap between UK and US publication. My guess is her work is very British so maybe doesn't have as much appeal to a wide US audience. But for me, the UK mystery writers doing something right over there. Edit: According to my library app, it's releasing September 10th!
Megwithbooks just uploaded a murdery mystery ranking type video! You should watch for recommendations! I also have been liking murder mysteries ever since Everyone in my family has killed someone.
I DNF everyone on the train. It was way too slow. There were too many characters to keep straight and nothing happened page after page.. I feel I gave it a fair chance
I wasn’t a huge fan of Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone. I thought I’d like it more but the asides and funny little quips just gave me trying too hard vibes. I think I’ll skip this one.
