I wanted dreads about five years ago. I researched and was ready to do it. But some things happened with a co worker. She was black, I’m white, she told a client that because I’m white I cannot do black peoples hair. Full disclosure, I grew up doing hair with my black friend and her family. That’s where I learned to do a lot with hair. She had no idea but just assumed because I’m white I knew nothing. Anyway, I left that job in 2020 and a few months ago I started seeing your videos again! Nov 1st last year I started locking my hair and I love it so much! You are a beautiful encouragement for people. You definitely made me feel confident enough to go for it. ❤ thanks for that!

@@ThaSpeedsterZ not every white person should be held accountable for what someone else did. I’m not in the habit of accepting responsibility for things I didn’t do. I can be respectful to anyone. Anyone who can be respectful with me as well. Even still, I’m not sure what you’re saying really has to do with my experience. It would be seen as 100% unacceptable behavior if I did to someone, what that woman did to me. If I said the things she said I’d be the most racist person in the world… but because she’s black it’s okay? I should consider what other white people may or may not have done to her? But she shouldn’t consider maybe she is just wrong about me? 😂 man just let it make sense…

The only reason I can think people don't complain about afro hair people straightening their hair is because when you think about it not that long ago untill I think about 2012 is was almost mandatory for black people to straighten their hair to be seen as "Professional" and "Clean". Causs afro hair was always seen as nappy and unkempt so employers could tell you that you needed to manage your hair better. But in the most recent present since then it's becoming not a problem at all to wear natural hair in any form without it being a problem.

Why does it even matter who we are? I'm biracial. My mom was Austrian and my dad was black...from Georgia (the state). Who cares. Do you have a good heart? Do you look out for those less fortunate than you? Right now, I'm a woman who is semi- free forming with really long and from what I have newly noticed, very tight and densely coiled hair. And buddy...I never knew it was actually this tightly coiled. All that being said. Can all of us just maybe enjoy each other's hair journey? Whatever that may be? Freeform, semi Freeform, manicured locs, two strand twists, finger coiled, sponge method, micro locks...Whatever the case may be. What I'm basically saying is life is to effin short to put that amount of energy into anyone who wants to do whatever to their hair. Stop. Please. Why don't we take ALL of that energy and build each other UP?! No matter the race. I Love everybody. It's not a hard thing to say... really. I Love everybody. It will in turn reflect the same on you, your soul and your heart. Mind you: I grew up in the hood, I was born in the late seventies, and was never taught hate. From either of my parents. I have locs and worked with making and maintaining locs on both afro hair, nordic hair, South american hair and asian hair. I have never heard about this from my clients and all of my other contacts after many travels to different countries in Africa. Here in Sweden white girls on internet have critizised me, I think they have white savior complex. I understand the context is different in the US, but still so huge difference.
@diamondjmann
@diamondjmann Год назад
Hi Gunter! I love your videos but this one seems to have a lack of understanding behind why these comments were made ( I don’t necessarily agree with them, but I understand their viewpoint). The main issue is the fact that when black people wear locs, they are deemed dirty, unkempt, and unprofessional. When white people have locs, they don’t run into those same issues. Here is a personal example to highlight these aren’t just dated experiences: I am a lighter skinned, full black person. In 2019, I had a second set of baby locs after a big chop and was hired to become a flight attendant. My hair was neatly pulled back and out of my face when I interviewed and was actually too short to touch my shoulders. The recruiter thought they were just twists, and when I went to training a month later, and my new company saw my hair a little longer and more mature than when I was interviewed, I was asked to either comb or cut them because they were non-compliant with their appearance policies, and I was given 1 day to do so or else I would have been dismissed from training and sent home without a job. Regrettably, I complied to keep my dream job I had worked so hard to get and I combed them out that night. Tell me why that same company allowed a white girl to keep the bottom of her hair loc’d when she came to training just a week behind me, and even took her graduation photo with her locs pulled in front of her shoulder and visible. I found out after I had graduated from training and I was hurt that my hairstyle I kept for my own personal reasons for years prior to that was not okay to wear as a flight attendant for that airline simply because I had a darker skin tone than the white girl who I felt “got away with it” at the time. That is why black people gatekeep what they believe to be their culture. I understand locs are a wide spread cultural concept, but it seems like only black people are scrutinized the way we are for loc-ing up. The same goes for Cornrow and individual box braids, black people were “ghetto” for those hair styles but when white people wear braids for their burning man festival weekends or whatever, it’s iconic. That’s whats problematic and causes the “racism” you’re calling out in this video.

@Ares_V
@Ares_V Год назад
I agree the company was racist, I honestly think you should take this to court, even as flawed as the system is I think you have a strong case. But in reality lots of white people are also deemed "unkept" because of dreads. Even if it's easier for some white folks to get away with it the thing is it's not wrong for anyone to have locs. You should have been allowed your locs and the white person there should have been allowed their locs as well. The company was racist to you because they discriminated against you by holding you to a different standard than someone of another race. That same kind of discrimination is what happens when someone attack some other person for having locs and not being part of a very specific race. Discrimination based on race is the definition of racism. You were victim of one kind of racism and people of other races being told that dreads are only for black people are also being victims of (another kind of) racism. Again I'm very sorry about what happened to you and if you have the whole thing properly documented I'm sure you have legal footing for a case. Depending on how well you have that documented, maybe enough footing to find a lawyer willing to take the case and getting their payment as a percentage of the amount granted instead of having you pay for honoraries.
@diamondjmann
@diamondjmann Год назад
@@Ares_V thank you for acknowledging my experience, but I’d like to reiterate, I don’t agree with the comments in the video, I’m just giving context as to where they’re coming from. I don’t think anyone should not be able to loc their hair, but on a regular basis, black peoples are held to different standards then their white counterparts so gatekeeping in a reaction to that. It’s not right, but it’s a human reaction. Just like yelling and screaming at people when you’re angry isn’t right, but it happens. Everybody deserves grace, though, that’s all I’m asking for for the writers of the comments. It comes from a place of hurt that turns malicious in a society that likes to profit off the backs of minorities in general.

I feel this point, but as someone whos white as day, with 4 year old semi-freeform locs, that are very clean, I've been receiving non-stop comments from the beginning about how dirty they would be.... How things live in them and if I cut them open I'd be disgusted etc....That no job will hire me looking this way.... It really depends on where you're living....I started my journey on the east coast, in Massachusetts and people either didn't care, or where extremely judgemental.... Moved to north california, and no one batted an eye.... Moved to new hampshire, and people were mostly against it or again would make comments on the cleanliness of the hairstyle... Now back west in washington state and no one cares..... I can certainly say that coming from a military family and most of them being stereotypical bostonian italians, it's been nothing with trouble from family in terms of how they view the hairstyle...I just can't really say that I've ever been praised or supported in keeping the hairstyle outside of close friends and a very select few strangers who I can literally count on my two hands over the last 4 years.....

You can embrace dreads as part of your culture but that doesn't makes it exclusive to your culture. Imagine if Italians trew a fit over people having lasagna? You think I'm offended if someone eats rice and beans or likes salsa music? Also when they are apparently not part of white culture because our hair "doesn't lock up" as I sit here with naturally formed locks while white, AND because faerie locks and elf locks weren't desirable HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO as if they can never be desirable. 🙄

@@Janyeee I'm talking about culture. I'm not saying you eat dreadlocks. I'm saying that the fact that something is part of your culture doesn't mean is exclusive to your culture or that's offensive if someone from another culture takes part in it. If you happen to like listening or even dancing Salsa I wouldn't be offended as a Puerto Rican. Also, I recognize the music genre of salsa is intrinsically part of my culture but it's not exclusive to my culture, it's part of other cultures as well (e.g. Cuban). When I hear of some Japanese that enjoys singing and dancing Salsa I don't feel offended.

My hair is extremely thin but with a lot of volume, when I kept my natural untangled hair long I wasn't able to wear hats without tying my hair but when I straightened it (or even just braiding it) I could tie it up down into about an inch of diameter. Also when curly and untangled it would go down past my shoulders but when straightened it would reach just above my lower back. That's just my natural hair. That's why I've grown to prefer dreads when I want to grow it out, which I'm sure is what he meant.

Hey Gunther, love your channel. I discovered you during the pandemic when I decided to lock but had nobody to do it so I did it myself. I don't care what ppl do with their body as long as they are not being detrimental to others or themselves and with that said.... With research there is no evidence of viking, Celtic or any non African/ native American society or group that naturally had Ether (locs) it was totally our thing, and that is not racist to say. We were discriminated for it, we had to assimilate to white culture and style to be able to have a way into this society. Now it's a trend. Like I said earlier I don't care when white ppl or non Afrikaans with it in fact when I meet ppl with it and they know the history behind it I respect. I mean I wear Italian suits, scrubs and sweat pants (not all at the same time lol) it's comfortable to me because they are what they like. I also wear a doh bok when I practice Korean martial arts despite not being Korean. But locs are not about race but about culture.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LCnacDWAOFc.html This is a video history which has references to show vikings did not have Ether but anybody can do Ether (locs) it's just easier for some than others. When folks do them (black or non-black) I feel the history should be taught and explained so it can be respected. They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery.... have a great day brotha.

You hit the nail on the head! “They’re twelve or thirteen.” Sadly we live in a nation of people with these immature, childish, egotistical perspectives on life and the world and how they interact with it. To claim ownership of any type of body painting, or hair braiding, or locking, tattooing, costume, clothing is ignorant, arrogant and at times racist. To call it “cultural appropriation” is just plain stupid. It’s impossible in our multicultural society to restrict how people want to present themselves to their community and the rest of the world. Tattooing is historically and culturally recognized as being most widely practiced in Austroasia, does that mean that Gunther in Germany 😊 can’t have a tattoo, or that Jamal living in the Bronx can’t have a tattoo? Does it mean that any culture or society that also use tattoo as a form of body decorative art culturally appropriated tattooing from the Maorís because they didn’t start tattooing until 400 years after them and also just happened to live perhaps on the other side of the world? For example an Inuit in Alaska, with no means of being able to communicate with the Maori or ability to travel through time? Citizens of the USA! Expand your horizons and your minds and look outside the box which is metaphorically speaking your backyard. Recognize that there is more to the world then your narrow minded views of how others “SHOULD” live and that if they choose to live a lifestyle, including locking their hair, what does it matter to you? Are they violating you? Are they somehow denigrating your culture by wanting to part of, and embracing the beauty of how we celebrate the beauty in all humans? Let people live and do what they want to do. Not only your rights and liberties are the only ones to be protected. Thanks Chase/Gunther for the videos. Love ❤️ and peace ☮️ to you and your family!

It is not racist it is retaliatory and defensive. The majority of my youth I was told that locs and long hair in general for black men was wrong dirty and unkempt and criminals as well as natural styles for black women. While white men with long hairstyles it's fine and white women hairstyles are standard. However, once it became mainstream it was easily acceptable on those with straighter hair as opposed to those with kinky hair and those with kinky hair would still be considered dirty unkempt and criminalized.

Hi Gunther, I'm a random viewer, so this comment may become lost in the history of this video's comment section. I agree with you about people not knowing the history of dreadlocks, especially those from the Black community. From my perspective, the prejudice displayed in the reviewed comments comes from a place of unknowing. It's easy to make fun of folks, but it doesn't help. If you are like me, then there is some history that you might not be aware of that may provide you the explanations you called for in this video. Being a lighter complexion gives one a different perspective than our darker peers. While it may not make sense to you, it's easy to take the time to understand the reasoning behind people's actions and beliefs. You mentioned the media only pushes out the narrative of police officers shooting black people to create controversy. While there is truth in your statement, it doesn't negate the fact that it happens far too often. And looking back at history, after the abolishment of slavery, you might start to wonder if anything really changed. I admire what you're doing with educating people about locs. You're well-crafted in your art, and you have demonstrated that time and time again. I hope your journey continues down an enlightening and inspiring path.

"Why is it okay for people with curly hair to straighten it?" That is the moment you lost me Gunther... saying that to defend white people cultural appropriating when society legit looks down on black people when we embrace our hair in any way shape or form. Whether it's a protective style, a full fro, or locs, there's always something. Our hair NATURALLY locs, and the way you're speaking doesn't sound like you even understand the feeling of having yet another thing stripped away from you. All you're doing is giving people an excuse to feel included in things they don't need a part in. Sure, vikings had dreads. We are in a different century. Type 3 and 4 hair locs naturally on its own. 1A hair needs to be manipulated HEAVILY to form locs, because it's not supposed to be that way.
@N8_Dogg
@N8_Dogg Год назад
What's being stripped from you? Someone stole something that was yours? You were robbed? You even said vikings had them 1800 years ago, but that doesn't matter bc it was too long ago? You sound dumb af. Locs have been found in tons of different ethnicities throughout the last 2000 years, but you want to claim something as your own. If every ethnic group just claimed and kept stuff for themselves, the world would be so far behind that there wouldn't be nearly the same amount of human advancement that we've seen over history. Free your mind from the victim mentality and you'll enjoy life so much more...

as a white person who has gotten dread locs before, one my hair would naturally loc up as long as I didn't brush it and I kept it clean. I can remember my mom screaming how matted up my straight hair would get on its own when I was young. Second, you think white people like white people with locs, wrong. I had a white older lady tell me how gross it was and why would I ever do that to myself. Yeah, racist white people don't change how gross they find locs just because one race or another has them. I can't change your mind by hiding so guess what, I'm doing my dreads again and damn if I'm going to say sorry to anyone white or black about it. It's hair. No one owns the styles. Not you, not me, no one. We need to stand up for everyone who does dread locs or any style that is natural or different. No one should feel ashamed for their hair if they find it amazing. Not you or anyone. I'm sorry white idiots have done so much harm to the people of color that anyone would cling to hair styles to feel better. I want you to cling to your inner true self in a way no one can deem it bad and shine. I want you to do natural hair if you like or dreads. I also would like you to give me that back and I hope someday you will. That we will embrace our true selves together even if we are different races and shine in different ways.

@Game Time Dre that's right. Even though locs are much older they made their televised appearance in western culture in the 70s. When a rastafarian by the name of Bob Marley made his debut. Before that - everyone in America with straight hair did NOT sport locs save for a few star struck hippies. Black american men and women wore "conked" out hair to look more white in order to fall in line with eurocentric beauty standards for employment. They weren't musician's and had to work ordinary jobs . Let's not forget that a law was just recently passed to fight against afrocentric hair discrimination. Im 40 years old. I always received strange looks growing up with locs and I got passed up on many job opportunities. If someone would've told me that white, asian and Hispanics would be fighting tooth and nail to defend locs i wouldn't have believed it. It's only now that locs are cool and more in the public eye that everyone with straight hair wants to claim they're somehow connected to them.

A loc IS matted up hair, but it happens naturally with certain hair types. You have that hair type because of your black ethnicity. Straight hair won’t mat into locs unless it’s manipulated to do so. Let’s keep it one hunnit if that’s what we doing here. I know white base heads that ain’t combed their hair in years, and they don’t have locs. And to say that people are racist for stating facts is redic.

No, and that’s not the argument. Also, everyone’s hair will eventually lock up, that’s how dreads came into existence, through not combing hair. It is racist to exclude a group of people to do something based on skin color however. Which is what many of the comments were doing.

People with that mentality piss me off so much. Like I'm a South Asian brown guy with wavy hair and I've gotten locs one time. It's a part of our culture and heritage. Hindu Sadhus (Saints) have been freeforming for thousands of years. Locs are what happens when you don't comb your hair. So yeah, that makes matted hair and locs basically the same thing. It doesn't change the fact that it's any different just because we have different hair types. Stop gatekeeping dreadlocks, they don't belong to any specific group of people. Afro hair does lock up faster but that doesn't mean other hair types can't lock. It's only Americans who think only Black people can have dreads.
