Reading the Surf for Surf Fishing 

In this video, we talk about how to read the surf and I walk you through some visuals for reading the surf for surf fishing. “Reading the surf” is a term that illustrates the process of looking at the water (the surf) and trying to understand what the different types of water movements are indicating about the sand underneath (or the terrain).
*IMPORTANT*
I can't believe I forgot to mention this final point. When reading the surf and looking for deep pockets, this is crucial:
In areas where deep pockets exist, waves that are built up with a “crest”- the white break on top- beyond the deep pocket, will lose their crest and become mellow or clean with “wind ripples” on the surface. You can see this happening in the last clip and the first clip very clearly. I'm so sorry I forgot to mention it and I hope you guys see this comment.
This is because the wave loses its “footing” as the sand levels dip down into the trough, therefore, dropping the wave causing it to lose its crest.
Understanding how to read the surf is important for surf fishermen because there are certain kinds of structure that fish tend to hang out near and feed by. I cover some basic visuals like troughs or pockets and I vaguely point out a sand bar.
