Hi! May was a trying time (but also exciting- class of 2020 yipeee), but I am happy I still found some joy in the books I read. Also I forgot to mention that I was first recommended Chemistry by my friend Joce (squibblesreads) at Booknetfest a while back- she is wonderful and I hope she is having the nicest day.
I didn't have the energy to discuss it in the video, and maybe no one will read this, but since I am waiting for this video to upload.......
I am BAFFLED (but also not really) at how many people are only just now deciding to read books by black authors. I should be happy to see all these people picking up books by black authors, but
but
all I can see is that every. single. previous. call. for. people. to. read. more. diversely. went. completely. ignored.
It took THIS to say alright maybe I shouldn't ignore these calls?????
The sudden interest only highlights that LACK of interest that has always been there and it is so sad. And because we all know how the algorithm works, I am sure plenty of white creators will start reviewing recent black reads- and now those reviews are going to get the attention and overshadow the black creators who ALREADY have been talking about those books for years.
So please keep uplifting the voices of those who are overshadowed, and keep searching beyond the default. Despite all the frustrations, it is a great thing to see so many people branching out.

I am glad people are trying to read books from more diverse authors. I hope this is not just a fad and people continue opening up their horizons. Books are a gateway to open minds and educate yourself on different topics. Books can help build empathy and help build a better and more equal future. The Fifth Season is an incredible read. I enjoyed the writing style and how the scenes would hit you in such a strong way. I plan to finish this series in the next few weeks.

It really does make me hopeful to see such a large amount of people making a big change in wanting to read more diversely- let's hope it lasts I simply can't wait until my holds at the library come up so I can continue the trilogy!!

Wow, great points right off the bat. I NEVER would have thought about that hairstyles example, because I’ve never had to. So much change needs to happen, I appreciate you shedding light on the more subtle examples of racism and oppression, I will continue fighting with you! Oh, and books, right 😅 I agree, the cover of A to Z is gorgeous!!!

I am glad the message resonated with you- sometimes the first thing to be done for change to happen is to simply be aware of what's going on in the first place. Ugh I can't get over that cover! I rarely like book covers with real people on the cover either but that one is just so pretty and cute (and goes PERFECTLY with the book) 😍

Thank you for the hairstyle analogy. We can get stuck in default and you are spot on ... we have to "go out of our way" to find something more. Very nice message. Comfort zones aside, we can be better. Yes! I have Poppy War on my TBR - the cover is amazing and the story sounds super interesting. I've also wanted to read N.K. I totally agree about the white default, it needs to change online and in real life!!! I'm glad you enjoyed The Fifth Season so much, I just borrowed an e-book copy from my library :) and I heard so many great things about The Poppy War!

I just finished The Fifth season last night and totally agree! It took me a while to read but mostly just because I wanted to properly appreciate it and savour it, but it definitely took a while to get into! Also The Poppy War is fantastic, I hope you enjoy it when you do get to it!

YAY! That is such good news LOL There are so many people picking it up right now and while I know it's well loved I am also sure plenty won't enjoy it I hear a sequel for The Poppy War (or a third book?) is coming out and I reallly need to get on board!

I always love to hear that people enjoyed the fifth season, it's such a good book! Haven't read the whole trilogy yet, but a lot of people say that it doesn't suffer from the problems other trilogies do, so that's exciting! I started Marie Kondo's book but wasn't in the right place to commit to it, so I plan to get back to it one day. But good luck with using her method when you get to it! :D

I agree about the "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" I remember listening to it on audiobook a few years back and feeling like it was so extreme! LOL, but then I watched the show and got to see different families actually putting Maries methods to use and I finally gave it a go! - Also SO EXCITED about The Fifth Season, its probably the book I get recommended the most and hearing you rave about it makes me want to pick it up right away. Great video Olivia! -also I'm so sorry I didn't catch the last part of your previouse video. I completely agree, it's so important but also sad that we need to put "Black" in front of what we search to find Black creators, because it's not the default. Thank you for bringing attention to this!

Some things I felt like she was calling me out (her whole part on books is basically calling out the entirety of the online book world LOL), and others I was just like uh.... 😂 I hope you like The Fifth Season! I loved the Broken Earth trilogy. So soo good. I'm planning on re-reading and annotating my favorite bits now that I know what's coming. Also, Love from A to Z was like a breath of fresh air. I can't recommend it enough to people.

I feel like I have commented something similar before on your last video but I am so glad you enjoyed the Fifth Season. I am so excited to hear your thoughts on the rest of the series. I agree it was hard to get through the first bit because we were thrown in but WOW can N.K. Jemisin craft a fantasy world. She blew me away. okay now going to my copy to see your page reference omg yes totally agree I LOVE the narrative choices she made

Chemistry is definitely an interesting read! I'm surprised that it worked for me, but it ended up being one of my favorite reads of 2019. Love The Poppy War and The Fifth Season (and that you pointed out that you don't have to wait for specific heritage months to read from authors of color).

@@iLiviesimone Weirdly enough, I loved the whole stream of consciousness style! And the quirks of the protagonist. I had appreciation for some of the themes too (like the expectations of family, especially when they're influenced by the culture you come from). And yay! I have the second Poppy War book out from the library right now and I can't wait to get to it. The Broken Earth trilogy is just so good!

I love Love From A to Z so, so much! The characters are so important to me. I think I gave it 4.5/5 stars because the writing style didn't always work for me either. I have been wanting to read The Fifth Season for a while now, but I keep putting it off because it's so intimidating, haha. It's been hyped up so much that I'm worried about it. Great video & I'm looking forward to the next one :D

I'm always so wary of picking up advice books bc it's like where is the line drawn between it just being the author's opinion and not advice hahaha. I remember how popular the show was a few years ago! it was refreshing to hear your thoughts on it 🙅🏾‍♀️

I was unsure about Chemistry after I read it as well but the longer I sit on it, the more it resonates. I'll have to reread it in the future. You and I both are in the minority when it comes to The Four Agreements. I've also heard (from a podcast) how damaging it can be for victims of abuse to forgive their abusers as he describes it in the book. That made me cringe and hurt.

I love the interlude/check in so much. And then also the moment where the obelisk rose out of the ground in the harbor 😮 it reminded me of when the aliens rose out of the ground in War of the Worlds 😂

I would hesitate in picking up Chemistry solely because of the whole "no dialogues" or chapters or the whole diary-style book... but the story seems interesting! Might give it a try! ^^ Will be on the lookout for the ambiguous ending tho >.>

I read Mari Kondos graphic novel version and as I was going through could tell what I was going to take away and what things I was super skeptical about. I read The Four Agreements over five or six days and I read a section and then wrote up a couple paragraphs about it for the blog and I think that really helped rather than just reading it straight through. I've noticed I need to break nonfiction up quite a bit or else I don't get anything out of it.

Oh I forget there is a graphic novel version of her book! Have you made any big change in terms of cleaning/tidying since reading it? And interesting point about needing to break up nonfiction- I find that I do that a lot these days with fiction too, it helps me remember the book better

@@iLiviesimone omg yes, so many, but I wanna say any time something really emotional happened, like Adam's dad finding out his son has MS, or Zayneb being angry with her teacher and finding out how her grandfather (or was it grandmother? I' can't remember exactly) died ... the author just described those emotions so well it was incredible xD How about you??

I also loved Love from A to Z! I dnf’d Chemistry because I didn’t like the writing and I thought the main character was a little unfair to her bf/fiancé. I was too bored to find out if she got over that

@@iLiviesimone It's been a while since I read A-Z, but I liked (SPOILERS) when Adam admitted that he didn't know what Zanib (sp?) was going through because he didn't look like a stereotypical Muslim. I also liked when her aunt told Zanib that it was good that she was so passionate about fighting injustice, but that she had to find a way to find moments of peace and healing for herself or that passion would rob her of her mental health. That book dealt with so much more than just a relationship.

Right? I would be fine if the texts or emails were bolded or italicized or something XD And I watched most of the first episode of the show- not sure if I will get back to it though (I tend to just rewatch other shows like the office, ATLA, breaking bad, etc.)

I'm currently only about 30 pages into Marie Kondo's book and so far I just keep wondering how she remembers what she was doing in Kindergarten. I barely remember what I read last year let alone what I read or looked at in Kindergarten.

@@iLiviesimone The farther I'm getting the more questions I have. I get throwing the shit out first. But she also suggests it takes at least 6 months to completely purge. And you can't put it away until its all sorted through...am I supposed to purposely live like a hoarder?? Like...what? I might as well not even bother at that point.
