She said that the westerners normally move out when they started working and rent is a large percentage of their expenditure, due to high cost of living. if every working singaporean who are single live by themselves and rent a room/apartment, then we will not be so well off. Nothing to do with how "lucky" we are in sg, but our social norms give us this advantage in this case.

Excellent video, and very revealing; as much about the questions as the answers. I grew up in the 50s & 60s so I’ve seen some changes. On music, while the music I knew as a teenager was great, you can’t keep listening to the same music for 50 or 60 years, so I’ve tried to find new stuff. I never got into Urban/Grime, etc, but I have loved EDM, especially Trance, since I heard it about 20 years ago. Currently loving Rina Sawayama’s new album (different again). Do Brits know much about Asian culture? Well, is there an Asian culture? I’d probably agree that not many Brits know much about East Asian culture(s), but I reckon we’re pretty familiar with the various cultures of South Asia.
@kimlt9923
@kimlt9923 4 года назад
Asian culture? Well, there's Chinese culture, Malay culture, Korean culture, Japanese culture, etc - all unique in themselves but perhaps share some overlapping similarities... just like European culture?
@tomburke5311
@tomburke5311 4 года назад
Kim LT Absolutely - I get all that. The impression I got from the question was that there was a single Asian culture (possibly Chinese?) and whether or not Brits were familiar with that. I was responding with the view, which I probably didn’t express very well, that Asia is so vast, with so many different peoples and faiths, that there isn’t a single, or even predominant, Asian culture. And to support that I mentioned the cultures of South Asia - e.g. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh - which are very different from the cultures of East Asia; and that typical Brits would have different degrees of familiarity with those various Asian cultures. Certainly I wasn’t familiar with Chinese culture but I did have some familiarity with Indian and Pakistani culture, for example.

I used to work as a dental hygienist at a dental clinic with quite a lot of expat patients. I have got to say, most westerners (at least those that I met) pay more attention to dental health then Singaporeans, like going for regular check ups. Not all the expats I saw were from the UK though. And most westerners would know what a dental hygienist as compared to Singaporeans.

In my experience about the complaining that both Brits and Singaporeans can complain a lot but with Brits (as well as Dutch people like me) you Will notice it sooner because they make it very clear. With Singaporeans it often is more an ‘internal complaint’ because culturally it is not done to voice your negative opinions out loud. I think that if we would mix both ways of expressing complaints we would have the perfect balance.

@MrScall35
@MrScall35 4 года назад
The closest you can get to UK fish n chips in Singapore is Smiths along Bukit Timah Rd. Singapore's hawker centres, restaurants, seem to use french fries rather than chips. In UK, Chinese & Indian takeways are just as popular as Fish n Chips. UK is very tribal, collectively not individually. North hates the south, south hates the north. Scots & Welsh hate the English. Liverpool hates Manchester n vice versa. Newcastle hates Sunderland n vice versa. And it is the same with other cities throughout the UK. You can be stereotyped just by where you come from. For example. If you are from Yorkshire or Scotland you are supposed to be mean with your money, which by my experience is not the case. If you are from Liverpool you are a thief, again totally wrong.

Hi Guys, chanced upon your vlogs and found them insightful & hilarious....just to add on to your sharing.....Brits love tea breaks and have a good natter; they also like to complain about the traffic+endless road works+what was on the telly the night before (in addition to the weather); eat strange (but some say delicious) food like mushy peas, fish fingers, black pudding; work life balance is sacred - especially POETS day; sarcastic, self-deprecating comedy (piss taking) is very much the essence of British culture e.g. Harry Enfield, Monty python; class system is latent but some people like to judge someone’s background (unfairly) based on their accents e.g. Essex. OK, enough from me time for that cup of tetleys and some digestives......

Its funny peoples perceptions of weather / climate and statistical reality . Almost everywhere in UK only 1 day in 3 has any rain in it on average - and of course that 1 day it generally rains only a short fraction of the day not necessarily allday. Days where it rains all day are rare. I reckon if you would step outside your house at random only one time in a hundred would you find it raining. Sunshine varies a lot from only 20% in some places to nearly half the time in the sunnier spots.

I feel like people here are kind of awkward or put off by striking up conversations with random people because the concept of 'stranger danger' is constantly drilled into our minds. It's just that concept which has made us kind of(?) fearful to speak to random strangers

yeah definitely the "stranger danger" culture in a random outdoor setting, BUT i think in an internal space, we can open and chatty especially to tourists and foreigners. Depends on the setting.
