In the traditional descriptions of breaking vows, the consequences can sound like the fire and brimstone descriptions of consequences found in fundamentalist Western religious discourse. His Holiness emphasizes the need for individuals to study and learn about the Buddhist path before taking on any commitments or vows from an emotional reaction or desire the belong. His Holiness served as the leader of the Sakya lineage from his enthronement in 1950 to his retirement in 2017. The Sakya lineage is one of the four main lineages of Tibetan Buddhism (along with Nyingma, Kagyu, and Gelug lineages, the Dalai Lama being the head of the Gelug lineage as well as having served as the political leader of the Tibetan people).
