The Refuge Ceremony is when we formally Take Refuge in the Three Jewels. The act of Taking Refuge marks our official entry into the Buddhist religion, and sets us firmly on the path of self-transformation to become a better person.
During the Refuge Ceremony, we receive the Refuge Vows and promise to uphold the Refuge Commitments. These 10 vows are the most fundamental vows in Buddhism. They are the foundation of all other vows that we may take in the future, such as Bodhisattva, Tantric or Vinaya vows. Therefore it is very important to understand the Refuge Vows and Commitments prior to formally taking refuge.
