Part 4: Takeoff
In this tutorial series, we cover all the basic steps required to fly the default Airbus A320 from A to B in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Whilst the series is aimed at beginners and people new to the A320, it still aims to follow real-world Airbus procedures where possible.
In Part 4, we carry out the takeoff and initial climb. We run through all the necessary steps to get the aircraft airborne, cleaned up and climbing to cruise altitude.

I've only been trying to play MSFS for about a week now watching a few RU-vidrs here, and when I tell you how loud and long I said, "Ohhhh!" the way you the climbing process, like a damn lightbulb going on! Thank you *SO* much for this series, this gives me *MUCH* more confidence in being able to fly now! Can't wait to watch the rest, especially landing! :D

Despite closely following these tutorials all my aircraft does when I engage the AP is it flies in a descending circle until I save it or it hits the ground. It also gives me "OVERSPEED" despite having auto throttle set and thrust levers set to Climb. I cannot for the life of me get this aircraft autopilot to follow the flightplan, speed, and altitude.

Very helpful tutorials so far, but you lost me at "set 50% N1" at 2:30 and then again something about a white donut at about 4:11 or so. Can you explain what that means and how/why you're doing that? Thanks! I'm also a bit confused about how to adjust the trim wheel with my mouse. It just keeps spinning back to wherever it was already set. I understand these videos are a couple years old and the sim might not be exactly the same any more. Thanks again for your time and your very helpful videos.

Hey, was watching your video and saw you just simply say to “insert autopilot” I’m not sure how you telepathically communicated with the aircraft to make it do what you wanted, but autopilot is the main thing I can’t figure out, and would’ve liked if you explained the autopilot and takeoff a little more, because I took off and I had no clue what to do from there, and what the autopilot was meant to do.

Hi Icy, Did you get a chance to watch the section / video on autopilot operation? Hopefully, that explains the basics of how the A320’s autopilot operates. With regards to the takeoff, it really is that simple; the Airbus is designed to be flown “fully managed” and so long as you have everything set up ahead of the departure (as we covered in the earlier videos), all you need to do is engage the autopilot master - the aircraft will then fly the programmed NAV track and vertical profile thereafter. If you want to intervene, then you can pull the appropriate selector for a HDG, Open Climb, or V/S. Does that help a little? All the best : )

What button do you use for the NWS? I binded the Teather button (I think thats what its called) but I cant get my nose wheel to turn.

Hello Bryan, I haven’t flown the default 320 in a long while but, from memory, you shouldn’t need to assign any button (you may have to assign an axis for NWS though, perhaps that’s your issue?). Otherwise, do you have the Anti-Skid / NWS switch selected on (just above the landing gear handle)? Other than that, I’m struggling to think what might be causing your issue. . . How do you move the "eye view" around the flight deck?

Yes, as GizmoDog mentions, it's using a device called TrackIR. It basically monitors your head movements and inputs them in the game. It's good, but a little pricey. I believe there are some cheaper / freeware options. FreeTrack and FaceTrackNoIR for example. Hope that helps : )

In the USA, is it common to carry out the lights and seat belt procedure at 10,000 feet or at 18,000 feet? If it depends on the company, how does Delta do it? Thanks!

Hi Rodrigo, I’m afraid I don’t really know the answer to that. I haven’t operated in the States and I definitely don’t work for Delta but, if I had to hazard a guess, I suspect they would still use 10,000ft for the landing lights. Seatbelt operation, very much depends on the airline and also the conditions at the time (at least in the airline I work for, it’s basically done at the pilot’s discretion). Sorry I can’t be of more help on that one. All the best! : )

Even when I followed all the steps correctly, I couldn’t take off the plane smoothly as it skid away from the runway. Any fixes?

Hi Ahal, If you’re skidding off the runway, that sounds like either a controller setup issue (make sure you have hardware inputs bound to all flight controls and both engines), or a crosswind issue (if the wind is too strong, it will try and “push” the aircraft off the runway). I’d start by checking your control bindings and trying the flight again using the “Clear Skies” weather preset. I hope that helps a little? All the best : )

great video, not understanding why my climb stops at 5,000ft? then after ATC yells at me a few times to expedite climb, the aircraft starts to ascend more quickly after a while

Thanks very much Schoc, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video! That sounds like you’re probably hitting a climb restriction on your departure. If the SID / departure you’re flying has a restriction and you using CLB mode, the aircraft will level off when it meets that restriction (and will climb again once you’ve passed it). If you want to bypass the restriction, use OP CLB (pull the altitude selector) and the aircraft will climb straight through to your selected altitude. I hope that helps? All the best! : )

Hi Icy, It would depend on the situation / ATC clearance. Typically, you would leave the aircraft to manage things and stay at 5000ft until passing the constraint. If ATC clears you to a higher level, then you would intervene with an Open Climb (pulling the altitude selector) and the aircraft will ignore the constraint. I hope that helps. Cheers : )

Dang every time I takeoff the and turn o autopilot the nose immediately goes down! Also my rudder keeps going in one direction even tho the rudder trim is reset! Do you know what I’m doing wrong on both of these things?

Also one more thing when you just takeoff and turn in autopilot 1 do you still have to pull the sidestick upwards or do you just let go?

Hi Mika, I’m afraid the default Airbus is just currently very buggy (it just seems to get worse and worse). I had the same issue myself. It’s unfortunate.

Try and fly manually until the aircraft is in the correct attitude and following the Flight Directors. As soon as you engage the autopilot, you can let go of the stick : ) (In the real aircraft, engaging the autopilot actually locks out the sidesticks).

When taking off and setting cruising alttiude, and when the auto-pilot is engaged the plane goes to the left and doesnt even climb? Can you please tell me why

Hi Flixqtt, Without knowing the exact set of circumstances, it’s very difficult to say what the issue might be. At a guess, it sounds like the aircraft is probably trying to track towards the first waypoint and presumably maintaining altitude due to a constraint on the departure. Have you managed to get things figured out yet? If not, some more specific details would be helpful and then we might be able to get to the bottom of things : ) Cheers and all the best!

@@IntotheBlueSimulations when I took off I instantly set the auto pilot to on, with 90 bank, I guess it wasn’t stable plus your tutorial is outdated, would be great if you make a tutorial with the FBW A320 which is way better than the default

Hi Danko, That is rather dependent on a number of factors and can also be airline specific (therefore it’s hard to give you a complete answer). At my airline, the vast majority of the time, thrust reduction (bringing the thrust levers back) and acceleration (retracting the flaps once above the appropriate speed) take place passing through 1,500ft. Both of these values can be adjusted in the Takeoff PERF page of the MCDU. I hope that helps a little? All the best!

When on holding point before takeoff, shouldn’t you turn off taxi lights and turn on landing lights instead. Anyways great content like always

Hi Ahmed, I think (to some degree) each operator has its own SOP’s for the lights but, no, that’s not how the lights are operated under the SOP’s that I use (they are operated as per the video). I hope that clarifies things and I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks very much once again : )

Hehe, I did yes. Varies from airline to airline, pilot to pilot and day to day, but it’s fairly common to have it in shortly after gear up.

Hello George, Given that the series is aimed at absolute beginners, I thought it would be easier to demonstrate a TOGA takeoff (rather than getting into the specifics of a FLEX takeoff (how to set it up, why it’s used etc) and also, TOGA will cover all scenarios, rather than viewers learning to use FLEX, which may then limit them under certain conditions. i hope that clarifies things? My aircraft just wont climb above 5000 feet even through my selected altitude is set at 30000 feet in blue. Is it some sort of altitude restriction? I have no clue how to get over it...

Hello Jonathan, That does sound like you probably have an altitude restriction on your departure. Have you tried performing an Open Climb (pulling the altitude selector), that should disregard any restrictions in the FMC and allow you to climb up to your desired cruise altitude? All the best : )

Hi Liam, That sounds like you’re probably hitting a climb restriction on your departure. If the SID / departure you’re flying has a restriction and you’re using CLB mode, the aircraft will level off when it meets that restriction (and will climb again once you’ve passed it). Hi Ponnarak, I’m afraid I don’t quite understand the question. Are you querying the aircrafts performance or the procedure? At the time of the recording, the default A320 was definitely way overpowered yes. Procedurally, for the most part, you can climb at whatever vertical speed you like above or below 10,000ft. The only requirement (generally) is speed less than 250kts : )
