The really infuriating stat comes at the end: Rachel's son got £22,000 for the loss of his mother, but "Lizzie James" got £125,000 for the stress she incurred in fitting up an innocent man.

Now we can see why certain people, under intense scrutiny and endless interrogation, give false confessions. That Stagg didn't is a testament to his mental strength.

They'll say anything to make it end it's relentless and it's cruel I think some don't care if they're sent to prison, the thought of appealing must be mentally exhausting, even though they're innocent.

I grew up on the Alton estate. One of my best mates was Stagg's next door neighbour. We were around 12 - 13 years old when this happened. He kept himself to himself, softly spoken, always polite. He loved his dog, his Ford Capri and his heavy metal. I remember how all the mums starting gossiping about him when this was going on. Suddenly everyone "always thought he was a bit weird". He was brutalised during those years. I remember I hadn't seen him for a few months and he was barely recognisable due to the amount of weight he'd lost. Of course, for those who'd already convicted him, this was "obviously a sign of guilt." I hope he's doing alright these days. Cannot imagine what that does to a person. R.I.P Rachel Nickell.

Are we supposed to feel sorry for these police? I don't understand, the documentary seems to be sympathizing with the police work, but all I see from the police in this case is incompetency, incompetency, incompetency. Instead of trying to investigate all possibilities, they focused on one man, decided that he is the killer based on one woman's poor memory and tried to pin this crime on him. The police failed to find the real killer because of their incompetency.
@healthkick3343
@healthkick3343 8 лет назад
Yep. But worse than that, the real killer went on to murder another young mother AND her toddler, even tho his name had been given to these very police (who ignored that name, because at that stage they had decided Colin Stagg did it). And whilst i don't know when this was filmed (presumably before Robert Napier's conviction), the detective is STILL insisting Colin Stagg got away with it, despite not only a complete lack of evidence, but even evidence which contradicted his guilt. That detective would STILL refuse to reflect on his errors in future cases, I suspect. Terrifying.

+Relaxingtime4me How could these horrendous police fuckups not have been learned from 25years later, still today psychos are able to escalate and continue their horrific crimes because of incompetence, corrupt coppers going after innocence people while covering their own arses and in many cases protecting others, allowing them to continue their horrific offences

Robert Napper in case anyone wishes to Google the name and his conviction. The very slight resemblance to Stagg and the fact that Napper is actually tall, 6'2'', truly make one wonder about the reliability of eyewitness identification, which they also relied on.

Sam King It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he was. We *are* talking about "this crime", of which he *is* "totally innocent". OK, he *does* have a conviction for nude sunbathing on Wimbledon Common, but that is nothing comparable to murdering a young mother in front of her child. He "got what he deserved" tor *that* when the court made him pay a small fine.

@healthkick3343
@healthkick3343 8 лет назад
Colin Stagg has psychological development problems, meaning he doesn't respond to relationship situations as most people would. He said he didn't believe her, and just thought she was a bit nuts. And he admits he was just after a 'shag' (which was also what she was claiming to just be after too) - perhaps he wld have been more picky if he was planning to stay with her. And probably thought if he went to the police, having to tell them about his letter exchange with her (involving the fantasies they did) would just get them on his own case again. You can't blame him for being nervous. Potentially being jailed for life for a murder he didn't commit wld make most of us reluctant to contact them.

OMG In the 30+ yrs I've been watching true crime shows I've never seen such blatant idiocy from any police force anywhere. How did these people make it so far in their profession without knowing anything about the laws of entrapment? I just about choked when they said they were stunned about the judge's decision to not let them get away with framing him like that. Anyone this ignorant of the workings of the justice system wouldn't have even passed high school level law classes here in Canada. WTF UK? Every cop involved in this case should have been fired, not only for trying to manipulate the courts to frame an innocent man but for publicly suggesting that he was guilty after it was thrown out for lack of evidence and for refusing to look for other suspects. And what on earth makes that "Lizzy" twit entitled to compensation for her part in this crime against Stagg? She should have been fired too. They all should have lost their pensions for this and been ordered by the court to issue a public apology on national tv and then a new system should have been implemented to identify, eliminate and prevent all morons from working in law enforcement. The amount of crap written about Stagg being a perv and likely suspect was impossible to ignore. Of course the cops should have ignored the press. Stagg was formally acquitted in September 1994. In July 2006, the Scotland Yard team interviewed convicted sex killer Robert Napper for two days at Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire. Napper, 40, was diagnosed as having paranoid schizophrenia (and also as having Asperger syndrome) and had been held at the secure institution for more than 10 years. Napper had been convicted of killing Samantha Bisset and her four-year-old daughter Jazmine in November 1993, 16 months after Nickell's murder. On 28 November 2007, Napper was charged with Nickell's murder. He appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on 4 December 2007, where he was remanded until another hearing on 20 December 2007. On 24 January 2008, Napper pleaded not guilty to Nickell's murder. He faced trial in November 2008. On 18 December 2008, at the Old Bailey, Napper pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Rachel Nickell on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Mr Justice Griffith Williams said that Napper would be held indefinitely at Broadmoor Hospital because he was "a very dangerous man". At the same time, Colin Stagg received a public apology from the police. On 13 August 2008, Stagg's solicitor announced that the compensation, set by Lord Brennan QC and accepted by Stagg, was £706,000.

The focus on Colin Stag lead to the escape of Robert Napper who was convicted of the killing on 18/12/2008. Robert Napper was reported for a rape before the killing and actually killed another woman after it. The people involved in this case need a reality check they targeted an innocent man and allowed a very dangerous individual to kill again.

The undercover policewoman gets 125K for the 'stress' of doing her job when shes worked undercover with murderers, gang members before. Meanwhile the poor mothers child who witnessed the murder and lost his mum gets 22K, the innocent man being trapped by the undercover officer gets nothing. Makes total sense???

125K for the woman who "befriended" Colin Stagg and a whole lot less for the son of the victim! Now there's a surprise, what about the trauma to him, for the rest of his life! British "justice" at it's best.

Disgusting to receive such a large sum simply for leading on and emotionally abusing an innocent man. I bet that she could instinctually tell that he was innocent as well. Murderers have a particular creep factor that result in a gut instinct in women, hair raising discontented fear. She wasn't afraid of Colin at all.

Talk about entrapment, these officers including the deputy assistant commissioner should be hauled across the coals. The female undercover officer was a professional under cover officer why should she receive 125,000 pounds for doing her job, she adlibs a lot of the conversation herself. Very unprofessional desperate people trying to convict anyone handy.

Can we say HOLY CRAP!!?? I've never seen the severity of police incompetency since I began watching these types of videos. All I could do throughout the entire video was shake my head and become disgusted with the psychologist, Mr. Britton, and the 2 detectives doing the investigation into the murder of Rachel. They've stated that she was sexually "molested," then why in the hell didn't they get DNA from Colin to either exonerate or implicate him for the murder?? I agree with all of you, because they just focused on Colin rather Thane to actually get off their asses and do their jobs!!!! As for the Lizzy James bitch, I could tell immediately, as soon as she opened her mouth, that it was going to be some typecast of entrapment. Did they really think that by her goading him into saying his deepest sexual fantasy that it was going to workflow?? Any person with a brain could tell that this was a huge set up from the get-go. I mean with her telling him that IF he wasn't the one who killed Rachel then he wasn't going to be her type or good enough for her that's grounds for dismissal of charges right there, didn't they think this through or were they so damn desperate to fulfill their promise to her family that it severely clouded their judgment??? Dang, even someone who has absolutely NO experience with law could've gotten that so called evidence thrown out of court. It was a clear cut case of police profiling the wrong suspect and to actually believe that this dumbass psychologist, Mr. Britton, was another downfall for their Dumbasses. I can't believe that the detectives are STILL blaming him even though they messed up, but I do remember that every single thing didn't even point in his direction and the police line-up; I seriously think that that woman was coached into pointing him out and did you all catch that woman's statement to the police when she described him acting suspicious??? She gave a description of the murderer, BUT she only caught the side of his face and very briefly at that, so how can she definitively state that was definitely him when she really didn't get a good look at him, especially when she was reminiscing about what had happened that day; she stated that she was with her son, they said hello in which he didn't say anything BUT to give her a sideways glance with a smirk then goes on to say that she really didn't get a good look at his face then immediately she changed her story and that's when she says that he gave her a sideways glance. The neighbor was just as bad, because her actual version didn't really corroborate the facts. These cops bungled up the case from day one and made Colin's life a living hell for years, because they were too darned focused on him than to seek other potential perpetrators for this crime. I think that Colin should've sued the individual detectives, the police department, that psychologist and that bitch, Lizzy James. I can't believe that she received £125,000 for her traumatic experience, and he received nothing but he was the one being put through the ringer, he was suffering from stress and depression and anxiety, and all she did was talk and write asexually explicit things and she just needed all that money for her troubles... B/S!!!!!

Katherine Monroe Ms. Monroe Collin Stagg was paid 700 thousand pounds for the injustices he was forced to suffer due to the police incompetence, but I don't feel that was anywhere near what he deserves. DNA science was in its infancy back when this incident occurred, and apparently there wasn't any detectable semen left at the crime scene either. Don't understand how things were allowed to go so far afield in this case, but the criminal psychologist may have had a great deal to do with it. Js.

no woman is ever safe. I havent felt safe, ever. My mom put the fear in me, then i read horrible things in the papers, and havent stopped reading since. It keeps up a functional degree of paranoia. Lock your car doors the second you get in, don't ever stop for anyone, never go into the woods, isolated areas of parks, no hiking for me unfortunately though i would love that, walking down a corridor in a hotel my constant thought is, someone could attack me, is there anyone behind, is there anyone possibly opening their door to grab me, same thing on the street, keep away from the curb, check all the closets in the room to see is there anyone there (at least they wont surprise me when im asleep, as i know of a case like that), etc. It's not particularly stressful, it's a way of life.
