My dad is actually pretty good with technology even though hes in his sixties that's only because when the 1st home computer came out he got one and ever since then up until the year 2000 he had been building his own computers from parts that he custom ordered. I think if it wasn't for that he would be completely inept at technology. He even managed to teach my 103 year old grandmother how to use skype, play cardgames on the computer, and check, read, and reply to emails. I was born in the year 2000 and my dad took some parts from a bunch of old computers he had would put them together now and then he must have built 5 to 10 of them from from when I could remember and tell us about 10 years old.

For your info: The electric guitar is not an acoustic instrument, and although it is capable of producing a small amount of sound without an amplifier, the pickup mechanisms actually do not "listen" to the sound of the guitar and amplify it. The pickups are composed of magnetic coils and magnets whos magnetic field is interfered by the vibrational motions of the strings. This creates millivolt signals that are combined, electrically amplified and processed. The actual "sound" produced from an electric guitar would be the same if played in air, or in a vacuum (tuning adjusted to compensate for lack of air resistance to the string motion), as the output is purely electric in nature.

So this episode aired in 2011, and the iPhone was introduced in 2007; therefore, this episode occurred when doing an analytical equation on your phone would have been a bit of a novelty still.

After that comment about parents and grandparents I remembered my grandpa owning an antique typewriter. I owned a more modern typewriter in the 90s and now I got this image in my head of my mom trying to explain to grandpa how to use the new models and him not getting it. 😆

"... Handwriting analysis is so common..." I can confirm that in my Machine learning lecture the second set of homework we got was to program a learning algorithm that learns to recognize handwritten digits. if given propper instructions it is remarkably easy.

I've seen my Mom explaining how a blender works to her older Sister who was from the village / Country side and she was afraid of the noise it made so would never use it. She would use the traditional mortar and pestle ( which actually added more flavour ) while grinding spices

When I was a kid in the 70s, I always tried to get my father to play video games with me. he never would, he thought they were silly. later in life, when he was struggling with a cell phone or remote control I would think, if you would have learned about the simple tech in the 70s, you would better understand the new tech of the 2000s

An electric guitar is different from an acoustic guitar. You can plug any acoustic guitar with a pickup in to an amp if it has a pickup in the hollow body. An electric guitar has no hollow body (with some exceptions) and has a set of pickups near the bridge. The strings are closer to the fret board. There are other minor differences as well. Just an FYI 😀

Parent and tech: In their era, teaching by rote (memory) was very common, instead of the tools of problem solving. I have come to believe this left them totally mentally unprepared to deal with multi-functional tech that is frequently changing with updates. I believe it seriously impacted their ability to adapt, where things are not done in simple 1,2,3 steps. I have 1 parent taught a problems solving approach (physicist, chemist, engineer, Gas Chromatograph & NIR salesman), and the other who is essentially 'Howard's Mom' with tech, learned everything by rote.. compounded with the fact she exited the workforce before being highly exposed to computers. She claims to have programmed computers, but on deeper questioning it was feeding the punch-cards into the computer lol. Kinda cool as it was Nasa related.. she danced with Buzz before his flight. FTW dad studied under the inventor of Gatorade and went on to have a heavy hand in the creation of Big Red gum flavoring. Back to a previous reaction vid, he also needed to know the fluid dynamics in a constricting pipe for work he was doing in a milk factory. Final tidbit.. his was on course to be a physicist, until a professor said... yeah, but if you want to earn a living become a chemist or engineer. He did both. Love your reactions, but for the love of (insert deity), please lock the focus on your camera.. I thought I was having a seizure

The reason why you need to do things by hand is so that you can refine your skills as a physicist. I genuinely believe that computers are a weakness because it makes people dependent upon them. I believe that one of the many reasons that there hasn’t been a breakthrough in physics in such a long time is because people don’t actually understand the mathematics enough to truly do it on their own. You should never really use a programming language to do something like that. Every scientist should be able to do it themselves.

The computer is second nature to you. You grew up with it. That's the main reason I had kids. So they can take care of it for me. My ipod has over 1000 songs on it. I just give a list to my son and he adds to it. If it were up to me to do it, i would have an overpriced paperweight.
