Join me once again as I hit the streets in search of knowledge to further our collective understanding of what it will take to make Guyana a better place. This video is the culmination of initial and follow up visits to Mon Repos Market in which I ask vendors what improvements they would like to see around them. Expect a blend of interviews, raw footage, laughs, gaffs and horror stories. There is so much more to say but I'd like you to hear it from the people who live it. Building a better nation can sometimes be as simple as going out, listening to the concerns of the people, taking them seriously and seeing what you can fix. I believe that if our political parties are able to come out of campaign mode after election results are delivered they can start truly listening and working together to find lasting solutions and common ground. Look out for more videos in the Market 360 series as I start to paint you a picture of where our food comes from, where it is bought and sold and the lives of the people attached to it. I want to paint you a picture of the state of our public health institutions and interject with examples of best practice elsewhere. In customary style we start by trying to build a full picture of the problems that do exist then try to envision the solutions that could realize a better tomorrow for us all. Subscribe to stay in the loop and you can support content production on Real Guyana through the fan funding option if you live in the diaspora or via this link tinyurl.com/j52en9j Over to you...

Thank u for posting those 2 videos, Bailey. I was looking for another to watch but I do not see, it. Guyana is such a lovely place; so rich in natural resources and way of life, in terms of socializing with friends and family. It is sad that conditions remain in this manner, to this day. It wld be so good if something could be done. I have been to Guyana 3 times and I love the culture but I must agree, Guyana has a SERIOUS problem with waste and water.

Great job !!. It's a site to see some of the things and/or medical hazzards that a regular person who is buying something, especially meat, is not aware of. It also takes a little ingenuity from the vendors also if they want to attract business from customers. It doesn't take alot and judging from the amount of money they are paying for rent I don't think it is enough to maintain such an expanse of filt generated every week but then again it is not an excuse. It is a real haert break though to know all it takes is little collective effort to make it better !! I will keep following and I am definetely going to visit the market when I come back and hopefully find a way to help the vendors.

this is a great video to advertise and displays hard working guyanese making a living also shows the busy hustle and bustle of the East Coast Market life. I've been going to the market since I was born lol and after living abroad for 10 years I love and miss these kinds of videos. as for the improvements etc. it's just like everywhere else the Rich get rich poor get poorer. I've seen Lots of improvement like there an actual toilet now lol but in think the real change has to come from the ppl themselves. like being individually clean and respectful.

These conditions are absolutely deplorable. Where are the inspectors? The vendors and the government need to form a public/private partnership and fix this hot mess.
@RealGuyana
@RealGuyana 7 лет назад
Deplorable indeed and to this day I am still trying to find the inspectors. As I upload the other market guides you'll see the scale of the problem is daunting but action should be swift because the risks posed to our health and well being are surely too great to continue ignoring.

Melonie Karl it is a hot mess a disaster waiting to happen, people of Guyana please refuse to spend your hard earn money at these dirty unhygienic stalls, especially where they are selling the meat on dirty cutting boards and dirty dilapidated stalls, these people are nasty, all of them could come together to clean up the place, they don't have any pride. Guyanese come together as one and speak up stop paying the fees all of you together take a stand. United we stand. Vendors clean up after your your area the Government should not be doing everything for you, don't you people have any pride.

Your objectives are commendable and Guyanese people should be very proud of you. Since two of the points of contention are the cleanliness of the market and its infrastructure, both dependent on finances, I look forward to part two promising to discuss more about the income and expenses from your research. It is my understanding that the GY$200.00 per week is grossly insufficient to pay for the cleaning and security personnel much less for maintenance of infrastructure. One thing is very glaring in this video and your others on the garbage situation: Guyanese DO NOT hold themselves accountable for any of it. If change is to happen the Guyanese people MUST become more responsible in their habits and conscious of their environment. This culture of "it's the Government" is only applicable in obvious situations; it isn't in this video. The last lady you interviewed correctly stated, "I can only speak for myself," which is exactly the kind of attitude that is NEEDED. Guyanese market vendors need to be more accountable for the actions and inactions, and should see themselves as complicit in it all. It is my understanding that you had a very long discussion with the last vendor lady you interviewed. I'm curious to know why the rest of the interview was edited and not shown. She said some very insightful things to which you were compelled to question whether or not she lived overseas. The mere fact that you recognized this, demonstrates that there are certain cultural value systems to which both of you subscribe and are able to recognize; the lack thereof in Guyana, which renders the "it's the Government" rhetoric almost obsolete and unnecessary. This idea that the people should be "given" better facilities is unfounded, for from the market's inception they were given and the conditions you documented are resultant. For this reason, from a financial perspective, it is against the interest and more importantly NOT FEASIBLE of/for the N.D.C. to step in and "alleviate" the conditions. As was mentioned before, briefly, there isn't enough money to address the concerns. The income has to support the expenses. In other words, you get what you pay for. Again, I am very much in favor of your work and an avid viewer and I am only making this comment after so long because I think there is a lot more that your journalism can achieve. And I say this recognizing and acknowledging that you need to be cautious and wary.

Guyana is a very beautiful country, I have traveled and I'm proud to be a Guyanese. That's the country where I was born and will always love. People come and try to talk bad about Guyana as if were they come from is so much better. Go to the Chinese supermarket in New York, you don't even know what ur eating. Take a walk down Jamaica Ave. and look at the garbage there, come on ppl the best place I have ever lived is guyana. And Guyanese are proud home owner, not them square box apartment they living in and can hardly walk in it. So to those who wanna bad talk Guyana get a live

And also if you have followed up on guyana news the vendors have no right to cleanup the market.And if you you knew about guyana for a long time, you may know that it was before owned by the community of Monrepos.But now the market is owned by my grandfather,Ayub Mohamed,The chairman of the ndc of Monrepos,Andale,and Lusignan. So my grandfather makes the decisions about the market and if you are talking about the building he owns it.He also owns the vendors outside.

If your grandfather really owns the market...honestly...he wants a box. He's practically begging for a box, and maybe some extra lash on the side. The way he keeps the market is outright disgusting and filthy. Good thing people like Francis are out there highlighting these problems and trying to find ways to improve Guyana. Now that you've been exposed, you better get to fixing up the place.
@borlani
@borlani 6 лет назад
I'm astonished you actually admit it - I'd hang my head in shame if I had anything to do with that market - it is an unspeakably filthy disgrace. If your Grandfather 'owns' it, then he is the one who should be driving change - before he is done for attempted mass murder from food poisoning - the place is a breeding ground for bacteria... or don't you know the first principles of food hygiene? The place should be burned to the ground purely for human safety. It is nothing less than a germ warfare production plant.

Guyana faces a severe sanitation problem. It is outrageous and can cause and lead up to several different health conditions that can result in death and sickness. I am not from Guyana I am from North America but it is safe to say that bringing in contractors from foreign countries such as the US to create a plan for pollution reduction will be one of the best plans on Guyana plate.

I am not Guyanese but I have relatives who are. The funny this is they are blaming the current government who just came back into power for the last 3 or 4 years for everything. What did the past government who was there for over 30 years do for the country. I used to go to Guyana when it was a beautiful country. Was there a heath department? Or was this the standard of the people who ran the country when pertaining to the country itself. The politicians have really destroyed the birth place of my forefathers.

The average cost in Canada right now for a house particularly in Ontario is about 1 million dollars Canadian. And that's going to be a house that's going to be a fixer upper. This will not be a house that's a mansion. Guyana does not realize how much more Rich it is than all the so-called first world countries. The first world countries may have clean streets but remember our population is larger than yours so we actually have just as much crime if not more than you do. Our cost of living is much higher our tax bracket is higher and nobody can afford anything in Canada. The only rich people in Canada and the USA are foreign immigrants that are wealthy from China and the middle East and India. They are not white people here that are rich. Truly the majority of people that have the money in Canada in the USA are all wealthy immigrants that are generationally wealthy.

@RealGuyana
@RealGuyana 7 лет назад
Do check out some of the other videos on the channel Cubyson and know that even when I post about things that negatively affect us in the past or present it is because I see those issues as redeemable in the future. Surely the only way for us to pay attention to and start addressing these persistent issues is to first understand them and that involves talking about what doesn't work. It's not all doom and gloom but we must never shy away from the truth. Turning a blind eye is exactly why this market is like this right now. This particular series is actually an experiment for me to see if I can inspire more advocates for better public health once folks start to understand the big picture of what is going on with their food.

Real Guyana I agree with you 100%, just that for us foreign based Guyanese, it's hard to accept we have fallen so far.
@RealGuyana
@RealGuyana 7 лет назад
I understand and it also disturbs me to note these things but I refuse to accept this is the direction things should be allowed to continue sliding. Having spent ten years in the diaspora, the Guyana I returned to was vastly different so I make these videos for a few reasons. To keep the diaspora informed because I wished for similar candid content while I was away, to promote an alternate view to that which says we shouldn't discuss our problems in the search for solutions and to see what change I can be a catalyst for right there in Guyana through advocacy. We are a dynamic species. We don't have to accept any reality we don't like if we are willing to put in the work required to change it.

This is a dam disgrace how people in these Guyana markets have to operate/work in nasty conditions, especially after they pay a fee to conduct their business for selling stalls/rental stalls. President Granger need to get off his ass and help to get people accountable for not providing venders with proper working conditions or he will be just like the old administrations. I hope this video get to someone in the government that gives a dam.

Yes Guyana might have its political problems and it might have issues with terrible plumbing issues with houses and housing and general waste being on the streets and things not being as clean as it could be. But if you people would just wake up and educate yourself and learn about your own ability to grow food and other ways that you can become innovative to fix all of your own problems you will not need to rely on government or anybody. The issue is you're still stuck in colonialism and you're trying to adopt a way of living as if it's a Western country and so you've got plumbing and houses that are built upon that system which just does not work in your kind of environment. What you guys need are people that understand your weather and your environment and can adopt housing and food according to the weather and the environment. And if you lived in a more self-sustainable way which you guys are completely capable of doing more so than Canadians or Americans because you have better weather than we do. Then you would be able to sort out all of your problems. Your government is stupid I know this. Just like the Canadian government is a complete idiot especially Justin Trudeau he's a fool. The point is all country governments are corrupt. As a people you as humanity and especially you specifically because you guys were the last freestanding rainforest left on planet Earth and unfortunately that was sold off to Norway and then sold to the USA for the Keystone XL pipeline which you've got oil now in Guyana we should supposed to help you with your economics but let's be real it's not helping the people with the economics it's only helping your corrupted government which is pocketing all the money for themselves. Anyway the point is if you people can just educate yourself and stop complaining about the government and stop thinking that white people from Canada and the USA or missionaries are going to get you out of your funk. Just empower yourselves with the internet man learn how to build your own housing and grow your own food and build your own self-sustainable habitat. You will not need the government for anything you can make it yourselves honest to God. The only people that complain about the government and all that are people that are not educating themselves to lift themselves out of that situation. Guyana has a very bad misperception that Canada and the USA is rich it totally is not it just is overpopulated with a lot of people struggling to make it and some people are lucky and some people like many like the majority are not. We do not have the good weather that Guyana has to grow food 365 days a year.

I got lost in the comments. True be told, everyone whose toes turned up when they saw the condition gasped. Keep showing these videos. Those real estate people who are pushing the mansions for people to buy, should improve these places instead. Market vendors are satisfied with this condition or they would pool together to make it better. They are waiting on the govt and not themselves. Years ago we had village council who is in charge? Too much long talk. Very disheartening no positive ideas from the men.

Believe it your country is more Rich than the USA and Canada combined. The amount of food that you guys have access to and can grow because of your weather. You have cleaner air and richer soil than we do. North Americans literally Source their food globally which is actually not good for the environment and also not good for North Americans particularly our own Farmers that grow food seasonally. The point is you have much more nutritious food than North Americans have access to. I know that you will say that Canada and USA are so-called developed countries but trust me they are not the average American and Canadian cannot afford to buy a house and they are poor and in debt 50% of Canadians are out of jobs or if they have work or employment is very low paying wages.

I often wonder if the people you talk to know who you are and about your youtube channel and as I continue watching especially what the young male adult and hairdresser reveal its such gross human violations. You ever think about running for President? you can cause a huge shake up in how people think!

Perhaps one day I will become more involved in politics but for now I think it is important to spend a few years understanding how the system works, the plight of the people and building a case for the importance of critical thought and holding our leaders accountable. The political tribalism in Guyana, as evidenced by the recent Local Government Elections, does not result in a population willing to give independent voices a chance. When that does happen there are many willing to step up to the plate because a shake up and fresh perspective are exactly what we need.

totally agree but it does not seem like a system exist just stories of gross human violations. listening to the hairdresser say she has to hold it until she gets home made me take a hard swallow. Some of the simplistic needs like electricity and water are still not accessible for Guyanese. The value of life is so valueless and its creating monsters within people. People will reach a breaking a point sooner or later in those conditions. But even more shocking is the number of people in the video who thought every thing was ok and not that bad.
