Thanks for another Weapons Wednesday! I was a materials/corrosion/metallurgical engineer before my health failed. At that time, I inflicted my metallurgy lectures on young engineers at work. Now that they are gone, I inflict my lectures on people on the internet. The amount of chromium in a steel really doesn't have much impact on how magnetic the steel is. Chromium tends to favor formation of ferrite and martensite, and they are magnetic. Most of the cheap stainless steels used for making knives have about thirteen percent chromium. While that amount of chromium will not completely stop rusting of a stainless steel, a twelve or thirteen percent concentration has traditionally been considered the beginning of the "stainless" steel designations. These stainless steels can remain magnetic to about any chromium concentration. Many stainless steels in common usage have some amount of nickel, and the nickel can cause the steel to have an austenitic structure. The classic stainless steels in this family are called the "300 series" stainless steels. The workhorse of this class was Type 304 Stainless steel which had about eighteen percent chromium and eight percent nickel. The austenitic microstructure made this alloy more ductile and easier to weld. Because the austenitic microstructure tends not to be magnetic, people would long say that a "good" stainless steel was not magnetic. Maybe the blades of the first swords are lower in chromium, but that's not what makes them magnetic. They could have eighteen percent chromium as the traditional austenitic stainless steels do and they would still be equally magnetic. Nickel (or another austenite stabilizer) is what would influence how magnetic the steel would be. I suspect that they have about thirteen percent chromium which allows them to be called "stainless" steels. That is lower than what most of the austenitic stainless steels have, but that's not an influence on how magnetic they are. Beyond that, these are neat swords. As Ian noted, the first pair of swords is nice because the low cost allows one to cut brush with the swords without feeling guilty about damaging a high-end sword. While cutting brush is not exactly the same as training, using a sword to cut something is fun. Many martial arts weapons started as farm tools, so taking a weapon back to that kind of work is fun in some ways. I love cutting things with machetes, and I can see where practice on processing wood would help me if I ever had to defend myself with a machete. The second sword would be a fun photography prop. I'm not a katana person, but I can see where this would look cool in a photo shoot. The idea would not be to try to make the model look like an actual samurai or other warrior of the time. The setup would need to acknowledge that the whole idea was to be theatrical and fun. Even so, that would be a fun photo shoot to do. The final sword is far too nice for me. Sometimes, I worry about where technology might go if we get into the whole genetically-modified organism world. Sometimes, I think we could do some fun and worthwhile stuff in that area. For instance, there's never going to be a time when people won't like ivory. Ivory is a beautiful material with some nice properties. The very rich are always going to want to find ways to get luxury items made from ivory. As long as ivory has that appeal, someone is going to want to harvest elephants for the tusks. If the mad scientists could grow unlimited amounts of ivory in a lab at a low price without using a real elephant, ivory would become cheap and plentiful. Ivory would become so cheap and plentiful that it would no longer be associated with luxury and prestige. We'd be buying a package of four ball-point pens at Walmart with ivory shafts for three dollars. Under those conditions, no one is going to make the effort to mess with a real elephant to get ivory. Elephants will always be a danger to people who live near them. Because of that, there will always be pressure to control elephant populations because people get tired of their villages being destroyed by elephants. We can't control how those issues will resolve, but if ivory were suddenly not a luxury item, then the demand for ivory would not be part of that equation. I tell this whole story to say that it would be equally cool if they could produce huge amounts of ray skin without harming any rays. The lab would just add the right nutrients to some vat, and ray skin would grow over the top every day. The workers would harvest the skin, and the vat would grow more.

Oh yes. Safety first. Glad Ethan remembered glasses. Amanda for shame safety glasses. Way to go on the discount. That cool on the swords. I liked them all. My favorite would have to be the last one. However it would just go on the wall. The practical one is the double tanto one. Thanks for a great video.
