You captured the steps and experience of dropping a transmission pan very well. It is an intimidating task because of the sheer mess it creates and amount of patience needed to perform the task properly. After cleaning the outside of the pan, good job you did, it’s good to paint it to provide a layer of protection.
More information on fluid quantities are here: Automatic - Dexron II ATF For the 350 1968 thru 1977 routine change is 5 pts, fill from empty is 20 pts 1978 on routine change 6 pts, fill from dry 20 pts For the 400 7-7.5 pts for routine change , 22pts from empty . For the 700 R-4 10pts routine full, 23pts from empty. I hope this info helps.

Great video. I am doing this today for my 78.I have the same gasket and was on the fence on appplying the special RTV for Transmission or not. I guess not, since I have read that it is not really necessary. Do you know how much fluid you had in the pan? I got around 6 quarts out, including some dripping overnight. I'll start by refilling 4 and then measuring. Thanks!
I'll be doing the same once I finish all the other engine stuff I'm working on. I sure drained alot of fluid from my transmission. Here is the guidance I'm using: If the fluid level felt cool the level should be about 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch above the ADD mark if it felt warm the level should be between the ADD and the FULL HOT mark if the fluid was hot the level should be at the FULL HOT mark if additional fluid is required add the recommended type directly into the tube using a funnel it takes about one pint to raise the level from the ADD Mark to the FULL HOT Mark with a hot transmission so add the fluid a little at a time and keep checking the level until it is correct.

I know, I sometimes which it was , but on the other hand I have a manual truck and little 1987 CRX that is manual as well, so ij that regard, I'm good with it being a 3 speed auto.
