Real Reason Barbara Pepper was REJECTED to Play Ethel Mertz On "I Love Lucy!"
Sometimes things don't happen for a reason--and that reason is often times valid and other times, not. Here is why Barbara Pepper, Lucy's really good friend, was rejected to be Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy. She made a hard decision but it was for the good of her family and the show. Do you think it was justified?

I thought the scene where the huge woman sat on Lucy's lap, not realizing Lucy was already in the seat. This is often cut by some stations, to make space for more advertising. Too bad, as it is a hilarious scene.

@lemorab1
@lemorab1 Год назад
@@guessmyname6210 Mary Wickes was a force of nature. I best remember her as Sheridan Whiteside's nurse in "The Man Who Came To Dinner." I wanted her to give Monty Wooley a punch in the gut. Mary could dominate a scene, but she could also play long suffering and put upon, as she did here. By the time the movie is half over, you want everyone to beat the crap out of him. Still, she and Lucy would not have had the energy between them that Lucy had with Vivian Vance.

What I knew about her is that she was in many of the episodes. I recognized her a lot. Just like Charles Lane who was in many episodes as well, most notably, the business manager who wasn’t giving in to Lucy’s pleas for more money. Too funny! There were many who had different roles on the show which was nice! What I didn’t know is that Lucy and Barbara Pepper were good friends and that she was a drinker or that she was considered for the role of Ethel. Great video Rick!

I never knew she was being considered to play Ethel but did know about her being a good friend of Lucille Ball. I read in one of the books that Pepper would be in the mahjong games often played during down time! Lastly, one of my favorite deadpan lines she had was on the tour bus as Lucy and Ethel are making pests of themselves changing seats until Pepper takes one of the ones Lucy wants to go back to! Her reply to Lucy's ".. Pardon me, ma'am! This seat is already taken..!" with ".. Sure is, Honey..!" was priceless!

Lucy looked so different when she was a blonde and Barbara Pepper looked way different with long hair! Both in a good way. I think the casting of Vivian Vance as Ethel was solid. She nailed the character. And despite the off camera disrespect Bill and Viv had for each other, you can’t dispute the on camera chemistry of the characters. I think Mary Wicks would have played too strong of an Ethel for Fred and no one would have believed they could ever be a married couple. Barbara I think would have played Ethel as more of a clone of Fred and there wouldn’t have been that comedic contrast that needed to make the Mertzes a believable couple. Bea Benederet could have been a good Ethel but her character of Blanche Morton was truly needed most on The Burns and Allen Show and was one of her strongest, especially when supporting Gracie Allen’s character, as Blanche never considered or treated Gracie as a joke, thus gaining Gracie more plausibility and sympathy from the audience. You’ve spoke of Barbara Pepper several times before on your channel Rick but this video was a perfect summary of all that was previously stated. Great work! 👍🏻

Like the Beatles, Lucy, Ricky, Fred & Ethel were a foursome brought together by equal parts luck, fortuitousness, providence, casting genius, individual talents working together as a whole, and a once-in-a-lifetime lightning strike of pop culture magic. Separated by less than a decade, that one-time Beatles Pete Best and Stu Sutcliffe ended up not being Beatles are the musical equivalent of the "ILL" cast not, for their own rationally sound reasons, finalized their legendary lineup with Lucy, Desi, Bill & Viv!

I did not know she was a consideration to be Ethel Mertz. But I did know she was a good friend of Lucy's. And to me even though she wasn't in these episodes very much she was really funny. She just always had that little glance or that little feisty come back and it was great I really like her. Example Lucy and Ethel go on the tour bus and Lucy can't figure out where to sit. Finally she Taps Barbara on the shoulder and says oh excuse me but this seat is taken. And Barbara says it sure is honey. And the other part where she is a nurse and she sees Ricky come in all dressed up in his Voodoo makeup and she throws the towels up in the air that was hilarious. Great comedy that still holds up to today. Thank you for sharing this Rick we always gain some information from your videos.

In the photo you provided from the episode, "Lucy's Last Birthday", isn't that William Demarest behind Lucy's right shoulder, as one of "The Friends of the Friendless"? I had heard that her affinity for alcohol was why they didn't have her play Ethel, especially since they were worried at first about Frawley (needlessly, thank goodness). I didn't realize she was in that many episodes, but I remember her most as Mrs Ziffel on Green Acres. I also heard that originally she wanted Gale Gordon for Fred, since they worked together on the radio series "My Favorite Husband", but he was unable to commit to the show. That didn't stop him from guesting from time to time (as did Bea Benederet), but Gale eventually became a regular on The Lucy Show as the greedy banker with a heart of gold, Mr Mooney.

Lucy was loyal in many regards. Barbara was a very beautiful woman & was a Ziegfeld Follies girl. Lots of tragedy in her life that caused over eating & alcoholism. I'm glad she got to play Doris Ziffle. She was till a pretty lady with lots of personality. Bus Tor & the Freezer were my favs. Didn't know she was voice in the "furnace" I thought that was Verna Felton? guess i was wrong. Also talk about do as I say. Desi (loved him some Bacardi rum daiquiris) I guess he didn't get too kerScnookered before filming. LOL!

Barbara Pepper was real cute in her day, the 1930s . She always kept her beautiful eyes all through her life .

She as never really thought of for the role. Her acting was too sarcastic and had severe issue with alcoholism. Just like Gale Gordon was never really thought of for Fred - even though they would have loved to have him. Jess Oppenheimer and Desi knew he was under contract for 'Our Miss Books' for both radio and TV and was not available (the TV series would be produced at/by Desilu starting in 1952).

You could tell William Frawley had a drinking problem, in one episode, you could see Fred's hands shaking from the DT's. When I was a young man even I could see that

His hands shake in many episodes of the show. It can be Parkinson’s or other medical condition. I am no expert

Hey Rick, why is I love Lucy, The original "The Lucy show" , you still have to pay for to see? My DVD'S of both shows are almost worn out. I wish I could stream these shows for free. I can find some streaming services that provide some of the favorite shows but not all. Who is profiting off of these shows that you still have to pay for and why? Can you provide any information on this, please?
