Not only did Bill Frawley negotiate his unusual (at the time) deal for residuals from "I Love Lucy," but I think he would also have been entitled to residuals from the various movies in which he appeared, most notably, "Miracle on 34th Street."

Bill Frawley may have had a crusty disposition on the outside, but inside, he was all heart. He was truly a compassionate and considerate person. He was also a highly underrated actor. Lucille Ball was so excited every time he was Emmy-nominated (5 times), each time sure that he was going to win. He didn't, but Lucille thought it was a shame that he hadn't. Frawley was originally chosen to be the lead on, "My Three Sons", not Fred MacMurray. Producers changed it up and he became second-lead; however, during his years on the show, one can't help but notice how well he could show his tender side, especially when paired with the youngest son, Chip. There was real chemistry there on the set...MacMurray and the others on set loved Frawley. That show really changed when the studio was forced to let him go due to exhorbitant insurance costs to cover him due to his medical conditions he was having at the time. His death was so sad...walking out of the theatre and passing out on the sidewalk. MacMurray, Desi Arnaz and others served as his pallbearers at his funeral. In my opinion, Bill Frawley always drew the biggest laughs on, "I Love Lucy". He had the best lines and delivered them point-on-cue! He is so missed!

Aww man I didn’t know that’s how he passed away!!! I love Lucy is a big part of my child hood even though it was wayyyy before my time. I have every episode and I also liked the Lucille Ball show. Fred was funny lol he was wonderful with Vivian on set.

I love the character Fred Mertz; however Frawley and Vivian Vance disliked each other quite a bit. According to "The Other Side of Ethel Mertz: The Life Story of Vivian Vance", Vance exclaimed "Champagne for everyone!" upon hearing news of Frawley's death.

He was great. My favorite line of all time was when they all went to Hollywood. Ricky asked Fred to do something for him and Fred said "aw, Rick, I can't, I have to have my rest."....Ricky said that the mission would include seeing some models.....Fred said ,,,hey, what are we waiting for......Ricky, what about your rest...Fred,,,"what do you think I've be resting up for"....I still roll on the floor laughing.

After "I Love Lucy" ended its run in 1957,Frawley appeared in 13 episodes of the "ILL" spinoff "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" which ran from 1957-1960-He then played the role of Bub on "My Three Sons" until his declining health forced him to leave that show in 1965-This was rather fascinating!

I knew a woman who took care of a friend, just because, she didn’t know her friend had money, she lived very simply. Her family didn’t treat her well. (Undoubtedly, they didn’t know either). She got a million bucks.

I read a great book whose name escapes me now about the I Love Lucy Show with lots of information on "Fred Mertz" Bill Frawley lived in a hotel in Hollywood, not a real "luxe" hotel, just a middle class place, with his sister. He married once early in life and the marriage lasted about a half hour. He was a lifelong bachelor and sports fan. After the rehearsals of Lucy he would go immediately to Musso and Frank Bar and watch the sports on the black and white t.v. and chat about what team was doing what. Patricia Barry appeared on My Three Sons as a love interest of Fred MacMurray and Bill and Patricia, who had a son (she was divorced) started going around together. Whether or not they did the Horizonal Tango is not known, but she did get his money when he died of a heart attack on the way to a movie theater accompanied by a male friend. Patricia was a sex symbol...a classy sex symbol with a velvety voice that probably lured old Bill into her tender trap. He didn't think much of women and came to the set of Lucy hung over many a day but did his lines well. Desi told him that if he ever showed up drunk he would be fired. He never did. His hatred for his t.v. wife, Ethel, is legendary. They would spar on the set, but mostly he ignored her in between takes. I loved Bill Frawley, warts and all....and Lucy's show would not have been as great without him.

I read that Frawley’s 2 brothers were in the final stages of alcoholism, unable to work or care for themselves. They both would succumb to cirrhosis of the liver and other organ failure in a sanitarium. Frawley had been paying their bills. Also, Twilight Zone fans may remember Patricia Barry from the darkly comic “glove cleaner” episode, “The Chaser” (1960).

Thank you for posting your videos. I am a fan!! I wanted to know more about some of the people you mentioned in this video. I wound up Googling the name Phil Tanner. A singer from Wales (Great Britian) & who died in 1950 was listed first. But after googling the name Phil Tanner again an excerpt from a Biography on Fred Macmurray came up on the Google search list. It strongly appears that Phil Tanner was a driver for either William Frawley, Fred Macmurray, or both. I just didn't have the energy to ready more of the book. But this most likely is the Phil Tanner in William Frawley's will. Just wanted to help clear up the mystery of why William Frawley put someone in his will that died prior to him making/updating it. Seems as though it was a different person with the same name. I am glad you made this video. It was very entertaining and fascinating! Thank you!!!

Very interesting. I think he left the bulk of his estate to the lady because he loved her, but felt that he was too old for her and so didn't ask her to marry him, or maybe she turned him down for that same reason. They could have been his " family" and so he took care of them. Either way I really enjoyed this video as I used to watch the show when I was a little kid here in Belfast. Cheers mate. Wasn't Patricia Berry the actress who played Lela on the Twilight Zone episode about the guy who bought a love potion for $1.00 that worked so well that Lela wouldn't leave him alone. She wanted to do everything for him and said stuff like "Do you know how much I love you? I don't just love you. I love loving you. Can I get your slippers for you or light your pipe?" He had to go back to the guy and pay $2,000 for the "chaser." I won't give any more of it away in case you haven't seen it.

Patricia Barry appeared in the premiere episode of MY THREE SONS and I think 1 or 2 later episodes. She also appeared in THE TWILIGHT ZONE (There's an image of her in this video from her episode, "The Chaser".) and the 1983 movie based on the series. She also made at least 2 appearances with Robert Culp, first in Disney's "Sammy the Way-Out Seal" and later on ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR in "Goodbye, George".

Hi Rick !! great video about the very interesting Bill Frawley !! I feel Bill was wise in requesting perpetuity for estate I feel the fact that he left $1000 each to the daughters of a lady friend says a lot .... perhaps he felt they were like family ....and This family would be in charge of his estate when he was gone. Especially since he had no children of his own and didn’t seem inclined to leave it to his brothers. For whatever reason he did what he did...... this was in his eyes, the best decision . A will is very subjective based on each person’s life and although Bill didn’t have his own family to speak of, these people were his chosen family. Thanks again for always sharing insightful and informative video on the cast of ILL. I love each and every one !!I 😘❤️

So Frawley didn’t remember everyone else’s lines. He actually ripped out the sections of everyone else’s dialogue and only kept his. He didn’t even know what the other actors were going to say. He just knew his response. Desi memorized his lines almost instantly and knew every else pretty much cold

Receiving residuals let alone residuals in perpetuity was unheard of at the time. Today we think tv actors make money forever but in the 1950s and 60s they only got paid while the show was in production.

I heard Bill "supported" his family financially. I suspect If he'd given them more $$$, it would have slipped right through their fingers. I have a relative like this. I was left as the executor & beneficiary of the insurance policy much to the chagrin of an older sibling. Goes to show, be loyal to family & friends (not a gold digger)

When Lucy had her own show she explained why she had cast Gale Gordon in her show, saying she wanted him to be Fred instead of William Frawley (on I Love Lucy). One big problem she had with Bill is that he would only tear out sheets of the script in which he had dialogue and throw away the rest of the script. She also said he could be cantankerous-difficult to deal with. This is also the era of the vaudeville trained actor (pretty much everybody could act, sing, dance and tell jokes with impeccable timing. Nowadays, actors have to be painstakingly taught to do evetything). And, one facet of the theater is that "everybody is family." It is altogether possible that Bill met this woman (or a close relative) and a promise was made for whatever reason. If you look into the history of vaudeville, the theaters that hosted those shows only began to shutter in the 1960's-or they became something else. Vaudeville actors retreated to wherever they could find work-like the Catskills, certain east coast ballrooms or Hollywood if they were lucky.

Lucy couldn't have cast Willam Frawley on her own show because he was already contracted to My Three Sons. Besides which Viv would never have agreed to appear on Lucy’s show with him! He made a cameo appearance on The Lucy Show shortly before he died after Viv had left.

I actually heard that when William Frawley died, Vivan Vance was out in some restaurant and after she was told she literally stood up and announced "a round of drinks on me". It's hard to believe that hated one another that much! They were apparently some of the best actors ever cause I'd never would have guessed that when they were working together! 🤨

The last time I saw Patricia Barry in a film, her character was being used to find the killer in sea of love. She thought she was being dumped. She was in tears, it was a good act. I assumed since she had reached a certain age she had to work. Now I know she wanted to work there is always a difference

Usually it's always the same repeated stuff how Fred and Ethel didn't like each other how Lucy and Ricky were and how everybody said this or did that so getting something unusual is a really nice change of pace. I remember one of the regular "reporters" on TMZ mentioned that he was a great-nephew of Frawley, but he never mentioned his side of the family being a recipient of the estate.

His brothers were hopeless alcoholics which is why they were in that hospital. They couldn't care for themselves. John Gallaudet was a pallbearer at his funeral, along with Fred and Desi. There's footage on RU-vid.

People always have their own reasons for leaving money in their will for certain people. I don't have much of anything but have Life Insurance and leaving something, not alot, to both my brother & my son. I am a single parent 2x and am estranged from my daughter for 21 years, not of my choosing, am leaving nothing for her unless something changes. I have a sister, but w/o going into detail, she had stolen from me & my brother. I am not leaving ANYTHING for her. My brother is very forgiving & is leaving her a good chunk of money. Of course it all depends who crosses over first. Things aren't always what they seem. Wm. Frawley was very astute thinking despite what happened to him later on in his life. Actually, the way you started this, I was wondering if he left something to Vivian Vance (LOL)... Anyway: he had reasons not to leave his brothers anything, which we probably will never be privy to. Thanks for this video Rick. It brought up to me who I really care about to leave anything to. If my finances change: may leave some money to St. Jude's Children's Fund. I have reasons for that as well. Right now: I donate a small amount monthly to this organization.

Your the "mum" - would it hurt you to be the bigger person and treat you daughter the same as your son on your death - it wont be any skin of your nose youll be gone but it could scar your daughter for the rest of her life - even if you two arnt getting along now your death will have an effect on her - she will be full of a whole load of if onlys and i wish i hads - if you want to twist the knife further its up to you

@@monicarwells2 My sister does that fake crying too! A few years after our Mother crossed Our Father was dating a woman he met in a Sr. Citizen Ctr. My sister hated her for whatever her reasons. When I spoke with my sister it was like our Father was cheating on our Mother. I told her she was a moron. You weren't around the 1st time to tell him anything etc etc. Well, Dad ended up in a Nursing Home. His ladyfriend (Mae) visited him weekends. Unfortunately, Mae passed before our Father. There was no funeral. Mae had no family so was buried in Potters field. It is more honorable now than at one time There is a plot, though a cardboard coffin I believe & a small headstone. But when our sister was told from our brother Mae passed she went hysterical. Was constantly crying. I couldn't talk with her on the phone. Everytime I called it was going on & I ended up speaking with.her husband. GEESH!

Interesting he got royalties in perpetuity for ILL, yet I remember the Arnez children saying the only royalties they get are from 'Here's Lucy'. I assume when Desi sold the rights to ILL to buy what became Desilu he gave up all their rights.

Hey Rick, my mother went to college with Patricia Barry, at Stephen's College in Columbia MO. My mother passed in 2003 but there is still a Stephen's group in the SFV and some older ladies might know what the relationship was between them. Pat's daughters might know. Just get ahold of one and ask! He is buried at the San Fernando Mission in the North Valley.

Privately I believe he didn’t get along well with his siblings. That’s almost always the primary reason for leaving them out of your will. Regardless of age, if your brother dies and leaves you nothing, you would feel somewhat hurt. It’s also embarrassing because people will see that the will did not included you.
