I have definitely studied Lucy. She was my junior theme and I did a 5 min speech on her life when I was in college (by memory!) I respect the work and research this video took…but let’s not forget Lucy Ricardo’s voice was not Lucille Ball’s natural speaking voice. She forced it up higher for the character which very well could cause strain. Her normal voice was lower (could have something to do with smoking for sure) The raspy or squeaky moments don’t bother me at all.
@KratostheThird
@KratostheThird 2 года назад
As a long time Lucy fan, I think her constant smoking ended up costing her in the long term. Smoking doesn't mean your life span will be automatically reduced. Groucho Marx and George Burns both lived to ripe old ages, both smoked a lot (Groucho lived to 86, George Burns made it all the way to 100). Lucy and Desi were literally at the top of the world when this television sitcom was on primetime. But Desi's alcoholism and womanizing was a growing issue. The rest is history. Even over 30 years after her death, many people still resonate and love Lucille Ball. But I think many don't realize the kinds of stress and work schedule she was in. When Lucy divorced Desi she went into Broadway with Wildcat. Her work on that show from what I've read caused a lot of stress in her voice and figure. You can watch old interviews on Lucille Ball from the 1970s and 1980s. Her voice was lower than the average woman, and she was clearing her throat a lot which probably meant that smoking took its toll on her. She was a workhorse. Real and genuine. A talent and flair that no longer exists.

As a long time watcher of all of Lucy’s shows, I noticed the change in her voice a while before the Lucy Show. By the time the Lucy-Desi Comedy hour shows aired, I could already notice her voice getting more raspy. It just gradually got lower and raspier over time, so it was definitely more noticeable by the time the Lucy Show started 2 years later.
@usforsarah

right, i think in the lucy show she tried to do a very acute voice like in the beginning of ILL but no longer could. she had gotten sick + smoking + age + she tapped every week and that can take a toll on one's voice... there are episodes that it feels like her throat is so dry and hurting. she did everything she could to be in character and make people laugh....

Looked up the episode. If it was a radical change that was because the I Love Lucy segment chosen portrayed great anxiety. In most of I Love Lucy, her voice was not all that much higher than her natural voice. However she could make it extremely high in highly anxious scenes, for laughs. Her voice deepened dramatically after I Love Lucy, becoming impossible for her to mask.

The same happened to Frank Sinatra. He was a matinee idol early in his singing career with his silky smooth tenor/baritone voice. In the early 1950’s he damaged his vocal cords and his singing career nearly ended. That’s why he was more involved in movies. He gradually changed his singing style to the whiskey/smoky gravelly voice that he became well known for throughout the duration of his career. Julie Andrews lost her beautiful singing voice as well.

I just always heard a big difference in her voice between the end of "I Love Lucy" and the start of "The Lucy Show." And I never believed it was due solely to smoking, if only because my mother smoked for 35 years and her voice changed not one bit. By the way, someone on a message board I used to frequent complained about Lucy's voice on "I Love Lucy" being annoying. I felt like bopping her one both because I'm a big "I Love Lucy" fan and I've never found Lucy's voice to be annoying.

I believe I saw something in a Rock Hudson bio about him doing some kind of strange yelling up in the mountains period to change his voice as well! Very well thought out video! Loved the graphics as they improve in each video where you feature them! I think her raspy voice served her well in The Lucy Show as it helped to separate the Carmichael character from the Ricardo character. (among other factors) In her later years, that same voice truly added to her portrayal of Florabelle in the TV movie Stone Pillow. I feel Lucille Ball used what she had in her career and made it work. Isn’t that just one of the many reasons we all love Lucy?

As a big I Love Lucy fan, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I never noticed the change in her voice during the show except in two episodes. "Lucy Cries Wolf," of course, but in "Lucy Writes A Novel," she had a very deep, gravelly voice which almost sounds like she had a cold during filming. I *did* notice Lucy's voice was much deeper in the 80s when she was on talk shows and interviews, but I always thought that was simply due to her age. amazing insight; thank you. The wind story sounds 100% like a perfect recipe for vocal damage, and I had heard along the way that even during ILL, Lucy was raising her speaking pitch for the character. Outdoor shouting of any kind for any duration can cause real vocal strain even for a trained voice. I have to be careful any time I speak at length, even at a normal level outdoors - especially when the temperatures are beginning to drop (which was part of the intended effect of the wind).

I can easily believe that Lucy's voice was ruined during her Broadway run in Wildcat, but the cracks in her voice began much earlier than is stated in this video. Listen to her voice when she calls Ethel on the phone, not knowing that Ethel had already entered her kitchen. This was an episode from the first season of I Love Lucy, the one where Lucy thinks Ricky is losing interest in her, and Ethel suggests she try the advice found in Dr. Hunphries' Book of the Month Club book. This is one of the earliest episodes of the series.

This was one of the first few episodes in Season 1 of I Love Lucy, where Lucy Ricardo used glamour and later tried to enter a poker game with Ricky and Fred. Lucille Ball was 40 years of age when the episode was filmed. Smoking definitely didn’t help as others have mentioned. Both her husbands Desi Arnaz and Gary Morton smoked a great deal. Smoking can vary from person to person though. Lucy’s natural voice was already deeper than most womens. However, while you state that there were already cracks in her voice when I Love Lucy, there was no doubt that it was worse by the time the Lucy Desi Comedy Hour premiered on TV. Wildcat only furthered the decline.

I never noticed that cracking in her voice from those season 3 & 4 episodes until you pointed it out, but I had taken note of it in the past with some season 1 episodes (not sure which ones right now). Her pitch was plenty high but there was cracking sometimes. It isn't until The Lucy Show in 1962 that I notice her voice is noticeably lower (after her time on Broadway in Wildcat). After that her voice seemed to deepen more and more year after year until she sounded like a raspy Maude Findley. BUT the voice never affected how I felt about her or her shows. I love I Love Lucy, The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show (aka The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour), The Lucy Show season 1 and sorta season 2. After that, meh, especially after Viv left. The highest I remember hearing her voice go is in The Operetta (season 2, episode #38, one of my favorites) where she tries to drown out the rest of the people on stage, singing "Drink, Drink, DRINK!" twice. Also loved it on the show when her voice would go real high when she said "DON'T you dare!"

What a great breakdown! Only die hard Lucy fans would analyze things like this. And here are my people! lol. I always figured that aside from smoking age and just wear and tear from performing, that it was also that Lucy Ricardo's voice was just a falsetto. Very much like Jean Stapleton's Edith Bunker. In the first episode of All in the Family Edith has a much lower voice and an overall persona of a weary, even jaded housewife. Later she developed the higher pitched voice we know as the lovable "dingbat". So her voice wasn't lower in the beginning, it was more of her natural voice. Lucy's voice didn't "change" so much as the lower voice was her real voice. That was always my guess. In my 50 years of watching I love Lucy almost daily, I love to see the little glimpses of Lucille Ball coming through Lucy Ricardo. Often when she's saying something sarcastic to Ricky. It had to have been very tiring to stay in the falsetto so many hours each week. Though in the recent Lucy and Desi documentary on Amazon Prime, it was said that Desi wanted the scenes done in one take. I think that was brilliant because it gave such an authentic feel to the show. Not the robotic "say your line and wait for the laugh track" you see in modern sitcoms. Anyway, I'm babbling. I could talk about this show all day. Truly the greatest tv show of all time. Thank you for this video!

Great explanation! Lucy’s voice became very low in her later years, and her “Lucy” voice on the show was def’ly lower in the hour long eps. Awesome video❣️

When you see her in movies from the 30's and 40's her voice is a more adult voice than her Lucy characters voice. I thought her Lucy voice was her normal voice.

As a long time Lucille Ball historian, I can say with confidence that Lucy became severely ill during the time she was doing Wildcat and her time on Wildcat most certainly DID damage her voice, but I think by that point, she was around 50 years old and I think Wildcat was the "final straw" - meaning that her age and all those previous years of straining her voice finally took it's toll on the old voice box!
@KratostheThird
@KratostheThird Год назад
If I recall correctly from her autobiography she went to work on Wildcat right after she did The Facts of Life with Bob Hope. She had an accident during her time working on the movie and her leg was still not quite 100% during Wildcat. Regardless, she was a trooper all throughout her show business career. She was tough and fought right to the end of her life, when she was in the hospital in April of 1989, and passed away at the age of 77. Ultimately, I think the stress from her perfectionist personality, her hard work ethic, her never say die attitude, and her relentless drive all took a toll on her well being. That’s not to mention her divorce from Desi Arnaz, plus she smoked a great deal. Many of her old black and white photos show Lucy with a cigarette in her hand. Both Desi and Gary Morton smoked. Lucy historians are also aware that the TV movie Stone Pillow put a toll on her life as well. She wore haggard looking clothes when it was very hot outside, which certainly didn’t help Lucy who was in her 70’s. Her failed sitcom Life with Lucy and Desi’s death from cancer made Lucy herself into a bit of a recluse, and certainly more tempered. Nowadays I see Hollywood people young to middle aged who look considerable younger because they have a more healthy lifestyle. But there is no real drive or personality. Lucy, Desi, Ginger Rogers, Red Skelton and others were all exceptional. There were never be another generation like them again. And Hollywood today is just an utter embarrassment. How the mighty have fallen.

I work in a doctor's office and I also change my voice. My normal voice is harsh but I raise it to an "I Love Lucy" voice so I don't sound bitchy, for lack of a better description. At the end of the day i feel it straining and feeling some damage. I, too used to scream and smoke to try to change it but it didn't really help. Fake voice helped a lot

Before this video, I had never considered her voice as a challenge for her. It easily rings true, especially after hearing a recent clip of her on The Carol Burnett Show, where she says "I'm lucky to be able to talk", before having carol do her Tarzan yell. As much as she needed her voice to work, it's sad to think of her suffering, as well as inspiring to see how she always came through.

Growing up, we had the OBS recording of Lucy in ‘Wildcat’. Then, when she was in ‘Mame’ I bought the OSR of the movie. It was then I really became aware of the drop of her voice level. Up until then I don’t really think I ever thought about it.

I do believe it was a combination of all the things you mentioned. Smoking does change a person's voice but maybe not as quickly and dramatically as it did. The voice she used on the show I think definitely effected it! That strain every day for hours at a time would do some damage. Especially the whailing shed do!

After watching 30+ Lucille Ball films, I figured Lucy raised her voice high for some reason that the TV execs desired. It's interesting to compare her voice when she did The Dark Corner or Go Chase Yourself to her voice on I Love Lucy.
@KratostheThird
@KratostheThird Год назад
You’re definitely a Lucy fan because I don’t think anyone would know Go Chase Yourself unless you’re seriously into Lucy’s life and career. I strongly believe that Three Little Pigskins was the very first film that Lucille Ball was credited in. She was notably tall (easily taller than the other two actresses) but had a very skinny frame. Voice was much higher pitched. One note though. Lucy was breathtakingly gorgeous in some of her old RKO films. At times her voice in Go Chase Yourself seemed deeper then that of Joe Penner.

As a small child in early mid 60,s I’d go with my dad to the Musicians Union #47 on Caguenga. Next door to Desilu. It is?was? a classic mid century building and I’d run across the speckled floor right to the water fountain. In those days members had to pick their checks up there. This was my world...the dying days of old Hollywood. I’d always glance lovingly as we’d drive past Desilu. We had a grey Pontiac like the Ricardo’s. Everyone now is dead. Everything is gone or changed.💔

I think the cigarette smoking was still the biggest factor, although a vocal coach would have helped, especially as she continued overusing her voice through the 60’s and into the 70’s. But if you listen to her voice early in the Lucy Show series, it didn’t seem that damaged from Wildcat, which she really hadn’t really done for all that long, due to the health toll it took.

I just listened to "Jitterbug Bite" from 'Dance, Girl, Dance' (1940) and then "We Need a Little Christmas" from 'Mame' (1974), and WOW what a difference. And like everyone else, I thought her voice changing was 100% due to smoking. Thank you for pointing out the other possibilities. Lucy sacrificed a for her career. I also heard a story about how using all of that heavy makeup (Max Factor?) ruined her skin. I heard that she was unable to get a face-lift because of it. That could be the subject for your next installment. 🤔
@jackvannote
@jackvannote 2 года назад
Let me put all the ladies that use or have used Max Factor Makeups minds to ease, The use of their make up had nothing to do with the fact Lucille opted not to have a face lift. And many issues contributed to her changing voice not all if which Rick has considered nor should he, nor would anyone in the know care to confirm. Even a celebrity's medical history deserves to be private. Thus I find this installment in bad taste. Sorry Rick but stick to the positive and public aspects of I Love Lucy Best, Jack A.S VanNote President JAV Communcative Enterprises A Multimedia Firm, Film Television and Video Productions General Programming, Sports Sport/Enterainnent and Christian Family Fare

Love your videos but I've gotta disagree this time. I think the smoking was the MAJOR contributor to the deepening of her voice, and I've heard the same results time after time from other smoking women, my grandmother included. Of course the other things also contributed, but I think the strain, polyps, screaming, wind, and anything was hugely magnified by the smoking, not the other way around. Still an interesting video!

I have read in several different sources that Lucy missed many performances during her Broadway run of "Wildcat." That was one of the major reasons why the show closed as early as it did.
