I have textured Caucasian hair and GIRL, your video helped me so much. I had to adapt my technique slightly because of different hair types but I’m so grateful! I stopped going to a hairdressers 3 years ago because a trim was never just a trim despite me never using heat and going every 4 weeks like clockwork. Now I’m dusting and trimming my own hair and it’s so healthy and long, you have eased my mind and reinforced that I’m doing the right thing, sometimes I feel like I’m trimming but I don’t know what is a split or damaged end unless it’s obvious etc. Thank you for helping me! I’m not against hairdressers, it’s just not for me. Great video! You have absolutely stunning hair, I’m so envious of those gorgeous tresses! Love from the uk xxx

Don't get it twisted, my ends loook just like Green Beauty's. I trim and dust my own ends and my hair is extremlely healthy and almost waist lenght. Go to 22nd Century Natural Women. I followed her, Green Beauty and Napural85 and my hair flourished. I just do not allow these scissor happy stylist butcher my hair any more period. So if you can trim or dust your own hair that's great. A woman's hair is her glory. Just be cautious when you sit in that chair. If you see it begin to go sideways STOP!

Girl yes! My cousin does her own hair AND trim it and it's almost waist length! Meanwhile I keep letting people do my hair (mainly because I do not have time) and now my hair is SHORTER than it has been since going to a Dominican hairstylist. And I started my natural hair journey way before she did. My beautician tells me how much needs to be trimmed, but then she just keeps going. Sheesh! But I am soooo scared to completely trim my own hair.

Not sure how I stumbled upon your video but here I am. I don't know if you're a stylist or were in the past, I take it you were not because you did not mention it, but I must say your knowledge of how and why things are done by stylists is spot on. I have cut a lot of natural hair over my cosmetology career, many times people get upset that I am taking so much off but the truth of the matter is just as you stated, when you don't cut the split ends your hair just keeps getting worse. The average person should get their haircut every 6-8 weeks and that will probably result in loosing about 1/4-1/2 inch. Just think if you are waiting 6 months to cut your hair, you are going to loose 3-4 inches and possibly more. When you cut more often you loose less. I have one suggestion for if you are going to cut your own hair...I would invest in some really good and sharp shears. A pair where you will spend ~$60. I know...that sounds like a lot but hear me out. Using cheap shears is like cutting paper with those scissors they give pre-schoolers, they get the job done but not efficiently and the edges aren't sharp. If you use a nice and sharp pair of scissors, the cut is precise and the edges are smooth and they just glide across the paper. Using cheap shears means the ends of your hair will be blunt cut and messy (you wont be able to "see" messy but I promise, get a good pair of shears and you'll notice the difference when you style) Also, you can try point cutting your ends. (look up point cutting on RU-vid) or just take smaller cuts per section and cut at an angle, so really the way you cut would resemble the edge of a saw blade rather than a straight edge knife. This keeps the ends from being bulky and they won't clump up when styling. Your hair is beautiful and I think it's wonderful you're sharing all your tips with other women. I know I don't have the same type of hair you or your viewers have, but I have been doing hair a long time and like I said, I do a lot of natural hair...I've learned a few things over the years. I hope I don't step on any toes with my advice giving.
@arleneaugustahair8393
@arleneaugustahair8393 4 года назад
Amanda Walker exactly but they are too cheap to get their hair done correctly. This is probably why a lot of Cosmetology schools teach mainly white hair because they know who is willing to pay and who isn’t. Black people always get the short end of the stick because we place ourselves there and then complain later.

I totally agree. My mom and I are both natural and she use to hate when I would cut her split ends, but now she welcomes it because she can feel the difference in her hair and she sees the growth. She now uses my homemade Neem shampoo bar, my rice milk protein deep conditioner, and my protein free conditioner. Her hair has totally changed and is so much healthier.

For me I know my hair needs a trim when I detangle and the ends tangle back up immediately. When they feel crunchy, rough and I can visibly see knots and splits. When I was relaxed I held on to those ends and wondered why my hair kept breaking off and never retained length. After that big chop im more comfortable trimming that crap off.
@MsAdrienneFox
@MsAdrienneFox 5 лет назад
I think we believe some stylists are “scissor happy” because we don’t understand how bad our ends have gotten and we want to keep our length. We just got to bite the bullet and let it go! ❗️Getting more frequent trims will help. I usually have my ends trimmed once a year but definitely need to do it more 😩. My hair detangles so much easier after a trim! ✨✨
@Michelle-pn9xt
@Michelle-pn9xt 5 лет назад
No. Some stylists cut off 4 or 5 inches of hair when you only need a half inch or one inch trimmed.

I have had a strand that had multiple splits on it but not on that level. I get my hair trimmed professionally every 10-12 weeks and still splits can be found. Even right after the trim. Split ends will always happen we can only try and lessen the AMOUNT that we have. I do think that type 4 hair tends to have more splits and breakage than straight or looser hair types due to the coily nature of it.

Oh.my.goodness! Talk about enlightenment! I now understand why you must cut off the dead/split ends. My hairs grows beautifully but I always wondered why it never really got thick or would break at a certain point. Would love this to be true for me but single strand knots in my hair attract or tangle with hair next to it and before long i have 5-6 strands of hair all tangled together along with shed hair acting like it doesnt want to leave. Keeping my hair moisturised especially the ends with water and then castor oil butter or grease is the only way i have to help negate this.

What type of styling tools do you use? I tried out a new comb on one section of my hair in the front, & now that section is full of single- strand knots! I am so grateful that I used it on only that one section because the other sections are fine. I went back to my old reliable comb. Also, make sure you finger- detangle your hair first before going on with a styling tool.

You can’t do anything to prevent single strand knots. They happen because curly hair curls on itself. You can avoid excessive knots by trimming it, doing deep conditioner treatments and proteins treatments. But to avoid them all together? Not possible

I think it's because when they trim they have to make it an even all around cut because that's what they've been taught. Some people just do search and destroy but most stylists will give an all around even trim if that makes sense.

MeMe Simone unfortunately, to the rest of the world it’s called a trim. When we take our shears out it’s called a cut. I always ask people exactly where they want me to cut and I make them tell me how high up to go. People need to learn how to let go of their split ends because it looks horrible and people expect us to do miracles with their messed up hair. Nothing can repair split ends. Get it cut every 3-4 months so it doesn’t seem as if it is being cut off too much.

It doesn't have to be that often. But base it off how your hair feels. I used too trim every 6 months. Like 1 inch. But i damaged my haur and had to trim more often. So take a look at your hair at her suggested time frame.

The last time I let a stylist trim my hair she cut off waayyyy too much and gave me uneven layers all over my head, this was about 9 months ago and my hair is still growing in those layers because of that 🙄

People who love to complain about “scissor happy” stylists are usually the one with dreadful ends. Y’all love holding on to length too much let it go sis.

I search and destroy every wash day and I'm getting so annoyed. I've been struggling with slit ends every since pregnancy. I'm at the point now where I just want to cut everything off and start over

I had one beautician cut my hair into a 2 inch hairstyle and yes my hair was broken but not that broken. She was my mom friend and i think she just had been out of commission for so long that she got scissor happy. She said she wanted to even my hair out to its shortest length. I was 14 then and i still had hair coming down my back. I stopped letting people did my hair after that. Fast forward i had my ends cut at the shop and the woman only cut 2 inches off. Moral, go to someone who knows how to cut ends, let them know if you want it even or only splits cut and learn to do it yourself!!

I trimmed my hair lastnight, I've been wearing my hair in a high puff or half up half down style for a while and honey, the single strand knots came out to play honey. I was twisting my hair and when I came to the ends they were rough, I mean rough rough also thin I was feeling lazy but I had to get rid of them

shalom modupe my hair is even weirder. Half of the time when I get single strand knots a piece of lent or something (even the day after my hair gets washed) gets tangled into the knot as well.

Hair will split more if you don't use hair scissors when cutting your hair. What ever you do, for the love of melanin, do not use regular behind scissors ON YOUR FREAKING HAIR.

I hope you realize that wearing your hair down most of the time is causing most of the damage. This is why protective styling should be done 95% of the time. Friction causes fairy knots, detangling breaks off the points and then you have split ends. You have to prevent the fairy knots by avoiding friction. Your hair rubbing on your clothes is actually forming the knots. If you sealed your ends, and wore them up most of the time, most of the damage wouldn't happen.

That’s absolutely not true you can leave your hair down if it’s moisturized, my hair grew so much and I leave my hair down all the time

When I went in for a 2nd press (4 weeks apart from my 1st) my stylist cut my ends again, just a little even know she cut them during the 1st press! I was like why are u cuting them again then?! But I trust my stylist and believe she wouldn't do anything to my hair that isnt necessary.

I understand the single strand with the numerous splits but the rest of the hair just looks like curly hair at the ends that possibly need to be moisturized, so am I the only person who thinks that those were split ends?

I’m EXTREMELY scared to get my hair trimmed because I’m super scared I’ll say I want 3 inches off and then they take off 6 I’ve had a botched haircut before and I’m scarred to this day. Anyway to get over this fear?
