In Sanchin-Ryu karate, which I study and teach, our third form, Naihanchi, basically starts with a variation of this move. When I teach it to new students, I usually say, "Well, here are three basic things we can get out of this, right hand up, left down, and as we rotate to the left, reverse hands." And then describe 3 different basic applications. Then I usually say, but it's the basic movement that can lead to 1001 applications. At first, in Tai Chi, when I was playing with it, I thought, what is the deal with grasp the sparrow's tail and parting the horse's mane, then realized it was basically the same, the roots of a basic hand-to-hand application.

I enjoy your videos, but I'm confused by the principal being demonstrated in this one. You start off talking about the application of the ward off/white crane spreads it's wings/ (i'm not sure of the name in the tiger system) but the purpose of those moves is to avoid your opponent making contact with you and pushing them away in a single move. You're interpretation seems to move away from that concept and rather than warding off an attack it creates a grappling situation which has its own dangers and requires a higher amount of athleticism to be effective.

Jake, You're demonstrating two Tai Chi energies, Peng and Lieh, (often confused, they look similar), and then you demonstrate Chin Na !! I'd suggest concentrating one one form only, as it relates to other systems, let's say Peng energy as applied in Tiger style. As always, great videos, if you're gonna keep 'em short, I'd limit them to one application of one form. Bill P.

I don't want to get into the usual youtube-discussion here and I have no traditional Kung-Fu-Training (Just JKD). However, I tried this technique at a higher speed with a friend who tried to resist. Every time (!!!) he just turned his body in towards me and had one empty hand to strike. However, from the same grabbing position, if I get a deep left underhook and a cross-face he can't turn at all and in the form it seems to be the same movement. Any thoughts on that? Greetings from France

the tai-chi stuff he's showing is legit but the tiger and the crane stuff..... well I'm sure people have eyes but then again if it was indeed a tiger application you would just use a rising forearm blow to the elbow and causing an immediate arm break after securing a wrist lock with an upward strike. the difference would be your grabbing with a tiger claw

IN real life is better to use Shaolin Chin Na inmediately, brake a bone , separate a tendon from the bone etc... and there is no fight. Check Dr. Yang,Jwing-Ming Shaolin Chin Na. But in order to learn the proper technique you need to have one on one instruction.Anyway, us women should go for the groin , trachea & eyes.

While the technique it´s real, the application in this situation is completely impractical. I understand the concept of starting with simplified attacks , and from that moving over to more complex applications, and only after that aply it during sparring, but that´s not even a shoulder grab: it´s an overextended pat on the shoulder with the hand open, he is not even girppping. Also, the logic of grabbing is actually drawing the other person closer, or off-balance, so it would just make sense that the clumsiest attacker would contract his arm while doing it, which renders this technique useless in this circumstances. It´s highly irresponsible to teach this as a practical exercise for a street fight.

SwedishGrammarPolice Krav Maga sucks terribly and is the one so called art that i would recommend to noone,it teaches specific moves for specific attacks,completely destroying muscle memory and causing a fighter to be slow,ineffective, and clumsy.
@nativewombat
@nativewombat 10 лет назад
Sky light What... Are you talking about? I've never gotten into a real street altercation, But I have learned from Krav Maga and muscle memory is essential. I've had friends you plastic knives or come at me (it sounds lame but I wasn't trying to be killed with a real knife), and against unexperience knife wielders like most people are, it is completely practical and effective. This idiot Jake Mace said himself that if you let go of the opponents arm, his entire technique becomes ineffective. Any punk off the streets would use both arms or pull away.
@skylight7811
@skylight7811 10 лет назад
Look,I'm not trying to change what you think I'm trying to keep you from promoting an art as terrible as krav maga,idk how long you've practiced it,but trust me it teaches techniques that seem simple,but when you enter any conflict it becomes complex because what they are doing is far less predictable than what you are taught
@nativewombat
@nativewombat 10 лет назад
Sky light I just told you that you were wrong, and I've had friends use plastic knives to come at me any way they wanted and I wasn't perfect, but incredibly proficient thanks to krav maga. You don't know what you are talking about.
@skylight7811
@skylight7811 10 лет назад
You just said it wasn't perfect, idk how You've been taught, but what i know is that there is no perfect, but there is preparation every style is supposed to teach You to never get hit ,choked,stricken, bashed,slashed, cut ,or all of that.... but krav maga puts too much emphasis on strength when it is necessary to relax or be calm,.. have you ever seen kravmaga instrucrors go all out on peopthat wanna just learn a lil,i have...the first thing a person needs as a fighter is to always remain calm and know and feel when it is appropriate to use your body to certain extents, and your skill to be taught properly not just quick n wild....any movement quick and wild could win a fight,but any movement quick and wild is also always compromised ..... which is why many people are Still okay with taking hits sometimes....... which is one of the worst mistakes possible

what if? what if? what if? what if? I'm sure you can use your imagination - just use a different technique. What if a boxer's punch misses his opponent? He'll simply move on to the next thing.
@l0ness
@l0ness 10 лет назад
serenadesilhout most people throw there weight in boxing or anticipate the landing of there punch. Than actually snap punching like you should be doing in boxing. Simple head and body movement creates fantastic setup ups for throws, strikes, manipulation whatever you want. In fact you don't even have to do anything just have them fall from good movement lol.
@Averagebum21
@Averagebum21 10 лет назад
If the person pulls away, he has no intention of really grabbing you. A modern confusion is mixing COMMITTED ATTACKS with game-like sparring situations in the ring. On the street, someone usually attacks you because either they are damn angry with you, or they want to take something from you, so the attack is COMMITTED. It is highly unlikely you will ever meet someone one the street who attacks you by NOT engaging, as they do in MMA fights in the ring, testing each other out, bouncing around the ring, going in, and going out. That just doesn't happen in a real fight. If someone grabs you for real on the street, they either intend to pull you somewhere, throw you off-balance, or use the attachment to strike you with the other arm or one of his knees/legs. If they pull away when you grab them, they are not committed, and may not be serious in wanting to hurt you. In which case, let them go, or flow into another technique.
@serenadesilhout
@serenadesilhout 10 лет назад
In addressing the original comment. In order to make this lock work you have to grab the opponent's hand, pinning it on your shoulder and preventing him from pulling away. If the grab was committed, he cannot escape from you grabbing his hand which Jake explains. It's similar to a Gi joint lock in jujitsu where you pin the opponent's hand in the gi to execute a very similar joint lock. Grabs are very prevalent in kung fu because they chain and combo very fluidly to other techniques - especially the back fist. Most forms feature blocks that transition to quick grabs that lead to everything else.

In my opinion, in styles like karate, muay thai, kick boxing, what ever often they have more fighting practice cause they use other training methods. (what is good!) but Kung Fu is a very good martial art too. Often in Kung Fu the teachers are only teaching you the kung fu forms ((choreography) with that you can´t fight! a lot of people don´t understand that), but not the techniques! Sometimes they are teaching you the technique but not how to fight with it.....Only a very little part of kung fu schools are doing a good training. So the opinion how to educate someone Kung Fu is splitted in many parts..... And than you got a lot people who used several years not the wrong style but the wrong training method and than they wake up when they´re standing into the ring. That´s why it seems all tobe only fantasy. From 1000 Kung Fu fighters you have actually maybe 1-2 who can apply their techniques. And Mostly those guys aren´t fighting in the ring... From 1000 Muay thai fighters you got 900 who are good as for fighting into the ring. Because of the training methods.
@skylight7811
@skylight7811 10 лет назад
Kung fu is not a martial art,it is the root of all arts,but with that thought put aside, no style is better then another, but the mastery one has over their style is what allows one to have great ability. Kung Fu teachers teach form because every move that You use in a fight is held within the form,but application cannot be taught, not correctly at least,it is up to the person that has learned the style to use each movement to their advantage.
@mintyfresh5000
@mintyfresh5000 10 лет назад
Jake's interpretation of kung fu, and his subsequent teaching methods, are mediocre at best. Forms have their place in the internal aspect of any martial art, obviously popularized by the whole kung fu scene, but the principles are meant to manifest and not the form. Like taking energy to the feet, for example, which is a common phrase heard in many chinese martial arts. This is certainly dependent on whether the teacher has any experiential backing and has been in contact with his own teacher for some time, which Jake most notably lacks. The practical line you're drawing between so called kung fu and other fighting arts such as muay thai is the partner training, specifically contact sparring or some form of intuitive learning process involving 2 or more trainees. Choreographed forms such as demonstrated in this video have no place in real-time situations, unless practiced within the contact sparring (and hopefully in correctly managed scenarios), which in my opinion is still very ambiguous at best. TL;DR - Jake runs a McDojo, don't take his teachings very seriously. Kung fu is just kung fu, it's nothing fancy, it's just a means to an end. If done properly.
@KeytoKungFu
@KeytoKungFu 10 лет назад
@ to all those who say that kung fu applications cannot be thaught, didn´t understand anything about kung fu. @ Josh and Sky maybe you can tell me the applications of the kung Fu stances?
@mintyfresh5000
@mintyfresh5000 10 лет назад
You're comment indicates you either: didn't read what was written or don't understand what was said. Your initial comment was directed at the idea that forms taught by most kung fu teachers are generally simply choreographed movements that have no place in applicable fighting scenarios. Applications for any particular stance are arbitrary, and asking anybody to "tell" you the applications is a rather silly thing to ask. Don't you think? Applications are just applications and are quite contrary to any real scenario UNLESS TAUGHT IN THE CORRECT CONDITIONS. But this is still a very ambiguous argument with no end in sight. The point is that the majority have turned to a muddled down, rigid, choreographed form of training that in most cases is completely contrary to CMA principles. Especially in this case, where Jake claims to be showing tai chi principles in action, in some kind of potential real time street fighting scenario. This is incorrect teaching at it's worst. Wouldn't you agree?
@KeytoKungFu
@KeytoKungFu 10 лет назад
Josh Cuyler Ahh now i know what you meaned. "Your initial comment was directed at the idea that forms taught by most kung fu teachers are generally simply choreographed movements that have no place in applicable fighting scenarios." 1. Yeah the forms have it´s right to be. But not for fighting. With training your forms you never will be able to fight. For giving the techniques further and learning them more easily. 2. Then if you know how the techniques are functionating, it´s more easy to recognize the applications for the several techniques. Cause a technique and an aplication are not the same. 3.If you´ve trained the applications it´s more easy to try to fight with them into "GAME". 4. If you can fight in the lower, slower more easy level called "Game" it´s more easy to apply them in the sparring... 5.and so on and so on ........................................................ All these training parts are not standin allone for itselfes. Every part only helps to make it more easy to learn the next part. But in so many Kung Fu Schools they are thinking that you start your training from somewhere and then to reache the aim to walk your forms extreme nicely. But that is false! .......................................... I asked you how to apply the stances, cause these stances are the first techniques. With the horsestance you step behind the enemys leg and kicking it away. Or from this position you try to pull the enemys leg away with the tiger stance. Or from this position you try with the jade ring stance to make a joint lock to the enemys knee. These and some more are the basic stances and basic techniques and a kung fu student should learn them in the first lesson. But there starts the misery cause the most teachers don´t know this very fundermental things.......
