The only thing that worries me about moving there are the snakes! I love going for walks in the woods 😳🥺 and would be terrified to find one in my house. Also living alone, I have no one to get it out for me lol
Despite the stats, they really aren’t that bad. Just learn what a copperhead looks like and learn to watch for them and you’ll be ok. Chris has lived in the Triangle since 1986 and has only seen 2 copperheads. If you live in a wooded area or near water you might see more.
Yes, there are lots of poisonous snakes here unfortunately. Rattlesnakes, Copperheads and one of the scariest Water Moccasins...not to mention the spiders!😱
In Florida we tell the transplants who moved there for the friendly people and great weather..... Please don't come down here and act the way you did up there. I'm new to the Raleigh area and use the manners that my mother taught me. I must say, it is NICE to hear people reply sir /ma'am, hold doors and greet each other with a friendly smile.
I'm Floridian by birth as well, and plan to make the move to the Triangle in the next few months. It would never occur to me to do something as crass as bragging about what I sold my home for or anything like that.
I think what needs to be emphasized on sites like these is the extremely long wait to see medical specialists and diagnostic tests. I purposefully moved relatively close to Duke and UNC for medical care, but was shocked with the 4 month wait to see specialists. In LA, to see a specialist at UCLA is about 3 weeks.
Just out of curiosity, does that include mental health specialists? Like therapist, psychiatrist, etc? That’s some thing I’ve been considering as someone looking to move this fall.
@@Roma_eterna I depends where you are coming from. I am very disappointed with the health care here. With all due respect, there seems to be a " what ever' attitude with professionals in general. That includes health professionals and service professionals like electricians, plumbers, veterinarians,. I lived in NJ and LA and Boston and never experienced an attitude like here before. Frankly I am sorry I moved here. Dont believe all the hype on sites that say its one of the 10 best places to live in the US. And its expensive as well.
@@richmonroe203 that helps a lot actually! I’m moving down from Boston, and I’m used to the amenities I mentioned. The problem is super high cost of living and it’s cold. I know Maryland and Virginia get colder temperatures too, but at least they don’t linger into April and May.
@@Roma_eterna The purchase of property is cheaper here, but service professionals are very expensive, higher than Los Angeles. I was shocked, and the medical care is overated here.
I'm living in the UK, and my partner has been offered a job in NC. I'm glad NC folk are friendly, and manners plays an important role. It's refreshing to see!
Coming from New York I luv the fact that honking your horn is considered rude down here. I only had to do it once when I thought someone was going to pull out (from a complex) in front of me. A small but significant cultural difference that is quite refreshing. The flip side is they do a LOT of tail-gating down here. I find that odd because the local speeds are typically higher here. It is a shame that the price of houses are going up fast in the triangle area, most likely fueled by out of state buyers that sold their more expensive houses for large amounts. They are able to put more money down and possibly even buy the house for cash. It remains to be seen if these out of state buyers will dilute the respectful culture down here. It is nice to wave to people and to have them wave back. In New York they would consider you being up to something. What a pleasant difference!
Thanks for your comments! Yes, it's very nice here. Beyond all the people coming in, housing is going up because we don't have enough people putting their homes for sale, which causes a shortage, which causes people to bid prices up and up and up. Hopefully, it will settle down soon. It's been very stressful for us and especially for our clients.
I lived in Raleigh twenty years ago. Never saw snakes their ever. But the more wooded areas snakes for sure. I saw the homeless situation growing while lived and worked there. Raleigh does have awesome food. But my donut of choice was Dunkin Donuts. I really miss Raleigh, but that traffic is a Nightmare! Yet Raleigh will always be my favorite place too live.
20 years ago it was pretty great, now it's not as good. Definitely more homeless because the housing prices have gone through the roof and it's less Raleigh like because people are moving here from all over and changing everything. There is still some culture left but it is becoming less laid back, less friendly and traffic is terrible. It's so sad really.
This is the best channel! You make me laugh while giving such great info. We are moving to the area due to a job transfer and have learned so much from your channel! Thanks for including schools too.
When people honk at me the second the light turns green, I’ve usually started to move, and I stop, turn around and look at them, then go on my way. The video from my dash cam will possibly be shared to RU-vid or some Facebook wall of shame. Bojangles most definitely puts crack in their food.
Stuck in Florida and Raleigh is my love. Lived in Raleigh for 10 years and grew up in the the Tarboro and Rocky Mount area and can't wait to get back to my beloved NC. Soon!!
If I were you I'd pick somewhere else to live in NC, Raleigh has radically changed in the last 10 years. It's not affordable, its crowded and the traffic is terrible. I've loved living here but I'm going to sell my house and move somewhere else in NC west of here.
@@LivinginRaleighTV yeah I saw it I’m still debating 😂😂. Raleigh is in a prime spot to me and I like that they’re winter weather can include snow but not too much
I am from India... I had stayed at the Marriot in Raleigh Midtown for around 3 months for small job assignment.... The people are very polite and very helpful ... The groceries, eateries, relaxation centres are all easily accessible. Overall a great place to live in..
I grew up in Raleigh but left in 2017 because of the influx of rude people. He talked also talked about the rude drivers and tried to tie them into the locals. This is untrue. The rude people are actually the outsiders that have been coming in since the mid-sixties.
I am from New York and have been living in the Boston, MA area (went to Northeastern University). We love our Dunkin’ here, but Krispy Kreme’s donuts are way better. Working full time and part time grad school (MSF/MBA) I have been thinking about relocating after done with grad school and Raleigh is one of the places I’m considering. Seems like a nice place to live. Definitely would love not having to deal with the brutal winters. Great video.
Agree with you on Krispy Kreme. Winters here will feel mild compared to where you're at now. It's actually really nice for those that like seasons but not extreme low temps. Good luck with whatever place you choose!
Can you make a video about Greensboro, NC, please? I want to know if it is a good and safe place for me to move. I got my Bachelor's degree and want to start with my career, but it is hard for me right now to afford housing in Raleigh. I want to start with a place like Greensboro and eventually, move to Raleigh. Thank you.
Fun video! We are empty nesters and relocating to Raleigh from Greensboro and are going kicking and screaming. Raleigh is a super fun place to visit, but the real estate prices are insane right now. Hate to give up a lovely home here for half the home there. Raleigh is a fantastic place for younger people who like a faster pace. Might I suggest Greensboro for more established families who still enjoy amenities without frenzy?
Great information but as a person of color I was hoping to hear about the racial/political "climate" in Raleigh especially in light of things happening in our country. We're close to retirement and would love to settle in a warmer city where folks are kind and respectful regardless your ethnicity or political views.
As we are real estate professionals, we can't discuss these topics due to fair housing laws. People in the Raleigh area are known for being kind and respectful. Definitely recommend you visit here and see all Raleigh has to offer! Let us know if you have any questions.
@@kiopos4764 would greatly appreciate any detailed information…..hopefully plan on working partime for another year….(RN)….would love to live close to Nursing/Rehabilitation facility……ty
Okay so the DRIVING. PEOPLE! Just get off the fast lane. It’s not hard. If you’re in the fast lane going the actually speed limit PEOPLE WILL TAILGATE. Some of us are in a hurry sometimes and it’s nice when people are mindful on the road of who’s around them.
I had someone in the fast lane, another car RIGHT next to him, then another car in the 3rd Lane all forming a line blocking anyone from passing. I mean really lmao
The out pricing happens to us all. Someone from Russia, Arabia or China outpriced a New Yorker or Californian then the NYer or Californian price you out. People are sometimes just looking for a place they can afford.
Hey guys... I moved down here last year during the pandemic and got cancer at the same time. I beat the cancer and I’m just now starting to learn the area. I’m a little bit south of Charlotte. My friends that I am staying with are moving back to NJ but I love the south. Where in NC should I be looking? I have 2 dogs. Bully breeds. One is 45lbs the other is 80lbs. Biggest hurdle for renting a place is getting my dogs in.
Sorry you had to go through that but glad you are doing well now! You might want to look at renting a home from someone instead of an apartment. Depends on how much you want to spend and what location you need to be in.
Some counties DO sell liquor on Sunday. Yes the traffic has come to rival NYC. The food is awesome everywhere. Just drink the tea don’t ask questions. Copperheads; if you ain’t from the woods, stay out the woods 🤷♂️ Our homeless are friendly just having hard times👍 Yes it has gotten 4x more expensive 🤦♂️ We ARE the ice line watch out
Raleigh is known for southern hospitality?! I lived there for 30 years, never did really see it. Out in the country yes. But in Raleigh? And then there is the traffic, quite simply, Raleigh sucks.
Can you or have you done a video about what grocery chains or food prices are like in the area? Very seriously thinking about relocating in the next 3 years before my son gets into jr high.
Love this and completely agree. I am a California native but have had the pleasure of living in Oregon and I cant stand the complaints and attitudes people from elsewhere bring. It makes people like me who aren’t rich and want to embrace local culture look bad. Im excited to experience some southern hospitality and less aggressive drivers (amongst other things).
Thanks for your comment! I moved from California (Los Angeles) a few years ago and definitely agree about wanting to embrace local culture here in Raleigh. It was honestly shocking to see how considerate and nice people were towards each other here and we hope it stays that way! - Tanner
This is NC 🥰 krispy Kreme...Bojangles ...and I must say you missed a hot spot Smithfield chicken and bbq❤thank you for putting this video out and touching on some subjects cause a lot of people skim over some of these topics especially the cost of living has gone up so much and pricing locals out....thank you for this video....love my home NC 🥰❤
Yes, we love Smithfield's as well! Thank you for watching our videos! We try to keep this channel as real as possible so I hope it helps some people be aware of the situation here.
Don't move here if you think it's affordable, it's not. The low income housing is all being knocked down and all the trees and the beauty of the place to put high rise after high rise of "luxury apartments". The things that made Raleigh beautiful and wonderful are being systematically removed. It's so sad. It is similar to what happened to Seattle years ago and has recently happened to Austin. People hear this is a good place to live, then they all move here and now it's not that good any more. But there are other towns out there that are nice and still have their charm and so far not that many people know about them. But it's over for Austin, Boise and Raleigh.
i live in the raleigh area.for the most part people are nice..traffic is terrible and home prices are outrageous, rent is high. however there are great jobs to be had if you are in the tech field..
Roxboro gets more snow since its at an elevation of over 700-800 feet. The surrounding area is only 350-450'. Its on a hill so just the slight elevation and northern point increases its yearly snowfall.
I didn't know about the snakes. That's a turn off for sure. Until now I simply thought of this area as the place where Crystal Mangum was from. But no place is perfect. You're right about that.
"We have slow internet here". No you don't. I live in an extremely rural part of western NC and our internet speed tops out at around 300kb/s. Until you've had to live with that for years, you don't know what slow internet is. Mom and I are moving to Raleigh soon and the way faster internet is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most.
Here in Northern California we have rattlers everywhere. We also have a big homeless problem. Anyhow, I don't understand why out of state people won't respect locals. If I were to move there it would be for the Southern culture, not what we have here in California!
We live in Virginia on the beach but thinking of relocating. We are a christain, homeschooling, “crunchy” /holistic minded, family with young kids. We would love to buy with some property at least an acre. Where would you personally point out for us to look in the area please?? Thank you
Can't recommend areas based on religion or familial status (fair housing laws), but can absolutely help you find something at least an acre in an area you like. Feel free to email us at hello@mortonbradbury.com
We would move there for the Southern hospitality, with the intention of blending in and not raise the price of housing. The news that newcomers are changing the culture in a negative way is disheartening. Thank you for addressing the issue.
The cost of living in the Raleigh area is expensive when compared to the rest of North Carolina, and you need to have a good paying job. My hometown is in the southeastern part of the state about 130 miles from Raleigh. I moved to Raleigh in 2018 to attend college and work for a pharmaceutical company. They seem to have a housing and an apartment shortage in this area. It's near impossible to find a house for under $250,000 unless you are willing to live in Lee or Harnett County. I know $250,000 or $350,000 might be cheap to someone from up north, but it's expensive for North Carolina. I have friends working in Raleigh that are only earning about $13.00 to $14.00 an hour. It's hard to buy that $250,000 or $350,000 house when your weekly salary is less than $500. I thought that I would make Raleigh my new home and retire there, but most of the houses are too close together and too expensive. I will just keep staying in my cheap apartment and try to save as much money as possible for now. I am fortunate because my family owns 9 acres of land in rural Columbus County. I will move back here in 5 to 10 years and build a home on the family property. It's peaceful and quiet back home and I don't have to worry about dealing with bad neighbors. The only bad thing about living in the rural countryside is fewer jobs are available.
I've been here for a couple years now and haven't seen much southern hospitality. In fact, most people have been rude to us especially on the road. Never seen crazier drivers.
Raleigh is sort of Southern-lite. Some Southerners, but a lot of transplants from other areas. I feel fortunate that it's been my home for over 10 years. It's surprising to hear so many people complain about the traffic- were they expecting one of the largest cities in the state to not have traffic jams? I've lived for long periods in rural PA, Northern Virginia, Seoul, South Korea, St Petersburg FL, and with my girlfriend just outside of Atlanta. Worst traffic: 1. Seoul- worst by far 2. Atlanta 3. Northern VA 4. St Pete 5. Raleigh and 6. rural PA. And for honorable mention, if you want bad traffic, try driving 95 in Florida anywhere below Cocoa Beach until you get to US 1 below Miami- it's the closest you can get to accidentally wandering onto an amateur NASCAR track.
Like many people right now my job is remote and I'm leaving my hometown in the midwest. Nothing is set in stone yet but I'm excited to have the opportunity to live in the Carolinas soon :) Raleigh is my city of research currently and this video was helpful so thanks
I’ve lived in NC all my life- grew up in Winston-Salem and moved to Wilmington area about 15yrs ago. I’ve worked on / off in Raleigh-Durham as well as have friends that live there. Raleigh isn’t Southern (IMO) - huge influx of Midwesterners starting in 1980’s a lot like Atlanta. Traffic is horrendous. Downtown is nice and I really like Cameron Village near NC State and the Farmers Market. I’m a Carolina Hurricanes fan and the arena along with Walnut Creek get a lot of concerts. Umstead Park is really cool too and there are several nice lakes nearby (Jordan, Kerr, and Hyco). It’s an easy 2-3hr drive to the beach. Mountains are about 3-4hrs drive. Many areas of Raleigh / Durham are very pricey - downtowns, near Duke / NC State / RTP as well as Cary and North Hills areas. RDU does have good airline service (Southwest, AA, Delta) but CLT has far more nonstop options with the AA Hub. There are a lot of good paying jobs. I’m very happy living in Southport area between Wilmington & Myrtle Beach - this area has become very popular with people from Northeast and real estate has become quite pricey in last 2yrs (almost doubling).
What’s Ting ? Never heard of it. They did lay fiber optics in my area but it still horrible. I just think that’s spectrum though. Spectrum cable is extremely expensive. WIFi and extended basic is $200 a month
I'm from NYC and am looking to move to the area. I can promise you I will never honk, litter, or be rude. I cannot stand it here bc of those exact reasons. Oh yeah Im looking for a super red county near Raleigh, like half hr away, if you have any recommendations?
Please send us an email: info@themortongroup.com or fill out the questionnaire we have in the video description and we can help you find a place based on your criteria and budget.
Raliegh is a great city. I lived there for 5 years. Both my daughters were born there. I came back to Massachusetts for work. Chick Fil-A, Bojangles and Krispy Kreme are all awesome places. People are leaving the progressive states for more sane environments like NC. Respect the local people. Embrace their lifestyle otherwise stay where you are. Good video.
If you from Raleigh then you already know and I mean growing up here made you tuff, and don't sit at no green light because you will hear the horn blown with the population growing as fast as it is
What frustrates me is when transplants who have been for a few years tell everybody and they momma “come on! Us North Carolinians welcome you” and tell us the nation is changing and we need to get over it. Also if y’all are moving here please learn to pronounce Raleigh, it’s not Rally or Raylee. As well as Durham is not pronounced Dur-Ham
The don’t think pronunciation is important. A lot of people have different accents. I’m sure if you visit somewhere else the accents are different and you may not say the words correctly but I seriously doubt anybody would get bent out of shape over it.
Great video!! You mentioned snow and ice but what about the tornadoes and hurricane season? Are there pats of Raleigh that get more flooded than others?
We talked about that in our previous video linked at the end of this one. Hurricanes are not usually a major threat because we are far enough inland that they die down before they get here. There are some areas that are more likely to get flooded (Crabtree area) but flooding is rarely an issue for most people. You can find flood zone maps online if it’s a concern. Tornados do happen but not as frequently as some other states.
Thanks Chris! I was just literally looking at the flood zone maps! My family and I are thinking of moving to NC from Cali this summer and we’ve looked at other states. I think hands down NC will be our new home soon so I’m trying to do as much homework as I can. Lots of Pro’s compared to other states we’ve considered. You have definitely made it easier for me with all the amazing videos you’ve put together!! Thanks again!!
They are here. Some people never see them, some people see them all the time. Some neighborhoods don't seem to have them, while others do. Generally if you're trying to avoid them, stick to neighborhoods that aren't near water or heavily wooded areas.
Only time I honk is when its been like 4 seconds after its green. Not waiting another 5 minutes for the light cycle to go through because you were on the iphone!! Also, at a stop sign, if you get there before me. Do NOT wave me on. Just effing go man! It's not hard. I've seen so many cases of both drivers waving each other on for minutes. Holding up traffic etc.
some people like to idle at stop signs (especially in neighborhoods) and use their phone etc. I know its bad but you shouldn't rely on others. If they wave you off, just go first, if they even hesitate more than 2 seconds, also just go first. Don't worry about others mate
I’m planning on visiting Raleigh this month because I am considering moving there from New Hampshire. Is there a place you recommend staying? Downtown? I want to get a good feel of how’d be like living down there. I’m in my late 20’s and need a fresh new start after completing my program and passing my boards :)
North Hills is a great location to stay. AC Hotel, Renaissance are good options. There are a lot of hotels downtown as well. We made a video for people who are new to Raleigh a little while ago. Here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fAS-16ZgyGI.html
Hey thinking of moving to Raleigh. I was also looking at Durham. I’m currently living in Plainfield, NJ. My main concern is living in a safe area. Plainfield can get a little sketchy. People sleeping on the stairs of my apartment building, cars getting broke into, addicts, etc. Will I have to deal with these things out there too? I want to visit and see what the neighborhoods are like but was wondering if anyone can tell me a little about what it’s like out there. Thanks
Every city has good and bad sections. A good realtor should be able to show you around and give you a heads up on your concerns. Go to the North Carolina website and the Raleigh website. They will give you an idea of things you want to be close to. They do have some great up and comming high rise apartment buildings just built and being built in downtown Raleigh.
The Raleigh area is really nice, as far as safety, I would suggest looking up stats on the Wake County government website and Durham website to get a feel for the different areas.
As realtors, we are prohibited from talking about safe and unsafe areas due to fair housing laws. You're right, the local government websites are a good resource for finding out info pertaining to safety.
Yup I found a little information and statistics about some of the neighborhoods. Thanks for the advice. If any non-realtor locals want to throw an opinion in I’m all ears. Thanks again.
@@anthonyricci2277 I lived in Raleigh from 1990/1993- 2004. I loved living in Raleigh in those days and got to see alot of changes happening during my day. I've driven through Raleigh since then and it's changed so much I can't really give you a totally fair assessment form 2004- now, but I can tell you that Raleigh was a great place to live back when I was in my 20s through the 90s. I can only imagine that it's gotten better since then in a lot of ways. It's gotten much more metropolitan and high-end. Unfortunately that does come with higher prices, but I'm hearing it's still better than bigger cities. I always felt if I was ever going to move to NC from any other state, I'd definitely choose Raleigh or Chapel Hill over anywhere else. If Durham is anything like it was back in my day, stay away! Raleigh is more exciting and full of things to do, while Chapel Hill is almost a word of it's own. Raleigh vibe (what I understand) is fun, exciting, lots of places to go and things to do, full of friendly faces.......and like the realtor said, has a growing homeless population ( that just wasn't the case in the 90s but I think it has been notable starting about 17 yrs ago and apparently has grown every yr since. I'm sure it's better than most states, but it's homelessness and the USA, it's going to happen. I live in Chapel Hill now and love it too. The vibe here is similar to Raleigh but a little more laid back. While Raleigh is a melting pot of different vibes, Chapel Hill people are all pretty much on the same page or vibe. You can't go wrong with either Raleigh or Chapel Hill. You will pay more for the lifestyle at both though but still affordable.
Thank you, sir for sharing your knowledge and in such a nice and polite way. Please know that not all Californians are rude! I don't like the barbarian types either and I was raised there in San Francisco. I hope those people act better at some point.Take care.
Just to clarify, we never said those were our thoughts. We said you’re going to find some people here who are upset about people moving here and changing things. Tanner moved from California to Raleigh and came up with the content in this video, Chris is a NC native, but this video is about things to be aware of, not our personal thoughts about who is moving from where. Thanks for the comment!
Great video btw!! I’m originally from the city of Chicago and lived in NYC. I just moved here to NC in February 2021 through my job. I just want to say that it’s a big misconception on both southern and northern regions. Not all southerners are polite and display southern hospitality I’ve met kinder southerners in Texas than NC. And not all Northerners want to change the south and not all Northerners have bad attitudes a lot of us came looking for the southern charm, quiet life, safe easier living. Only thing I brag about is Chicago bbq is better than any other state hands down lol (let me be biased 😂) You can pretty much tell who is from where with the driving southerners like to tail gait (annoying) and northerners (New Yorkers) beep the horn as soon as the light turns green and will cut you off that’s annoying as well. I agree don’t bring the negatives where you came from but also don’t push the negative aspects of the south on others as well.
Yep! Which is why this video is reminding people to respect NC culture if they move here from places like that because people rarely honk here unless it's for a good reason.
