It's not often you see real time videos of the Aurora and as we had a really good Aurora display on my last Northern Lights expedition to the north of Norway I decided to put together a video of nothing but real time aurora footage. The majority of Northern Lights videos are made up of hundreds or thousands of still photographs that have been combined together to produce a time lapse video. While very pretty, these videos are not truly representative of how the Aurora looks to the naked eye. This video is not timelapse and this is how the Aurora looked to us when watching it. The colours are pretty much what we saw, the motion is what we saw. Not every Aurora is as bright as this one was, but it can often be like this. In the next few years we are going to be at the peak of the sun's 11 year sunspot cycle so Aurora like this will be more common for a few years before becoming less common again.
This was shot on January 30th 2022 with a Sony FX3 and the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM lens. The temperature was around -26c at the time.
