In this week's video I am explaining the calculations you need in order to figure out the right length of material to cut for the inner and outer bezel for a step bezel setting for an oval faceted stone.
Materials Needed:
Calipers
Note paper
Oval faceted stone
Pencil
Sheet Metal (for the bezel material)
Next week's video will be how to cut & make the bezel along with the final steps to set the stone. I hope this was helpful for you and I'll see you next week!
Cheers!
Julessa

A quick story about pi. I was at a craft show talking with a customer and I was telling her that I use pi all the time. She happened to be a math teacher and asked if she could video me explaining how I use pi. She wanted to show her students that indeed pi is useful in real life. Remembering my school days that I too asked why do I need to learn this stuff? I obliged her and she had her video of lowly me explaining how I use pi to make jewelry. 😊

Hello Patsy Cakes! That’s such a great example of how something we learn can come back to haunt us sometimes. I sure didn’t think I’d be using geometry in my everyday life and even had to relearn some of the formulas to do quite a bit of my jewelry work. It’s definitely something most people cringe at when I tell them 😂. But, when you need it to do something you love, you’re more inclined to want to learn it.

Greetings from the Algarve. Thank you for helping me take the guess work out of bezel sizing (for faceted stones). Much needed after wasting not only precious metal but loads of time! It was also good to brush up on basic maths haven't used Pi since school many moons ago lol.

Hello Gillian! Welcome my friend from Portugal! Yes, when they said we would never use geometry in life, they didn’t realize we’d try our hands at jewelry! I know I never thought I’d use it again after high school, but now it’s part of my bench routine and it has saved me a lot of time and money over the years. 😃 By the way… Estoy aprendiendo español para mi futuros vídeos! Tengo una amiga de Argentina aquí y ella me ayuda con las traducciones. ☺️ I know you probably speak Portuguese, but maybe I can think about learning both!

Ah good luck with the spanish. I speak a little which comes in handy being so close to the spanish border however portuguese is very different and quite difficult to learn due to dropped endings, nasal sounds and 9 opposed to 5 vowel sounds in spanish. I'm still learning after almost 3 years here (Irish from UK originally). Hope you get to visit Argentina soon! @@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith

@@TheLamiapsyche i started to do some research on Portuguese and realized it will be a major undertaking! Maybe after I get fluent in Spanish! 🤪

@@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith Good idea. There is a lot of similarity (re conjugating verbs etc) so it is helpful.

This is great, thank you! Can I use this same formula to calculate the step bezel for a REGTANGULAR faceted stone??? (If not, pls make that video! 🙏😉)

@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith Год назад
Hello Mary! Thank you for stopping in and checking out my videos. The formula does not work for rectangular shaped stones so I will be creating a video specific to that topic. I’ve had a few requests including yours, so it is on the list of upcoming videos. The process will be similar, but the specifics of the formula are different. 😉

Dear Julessa, Have you already done a lesson on choosing a GRS BenchMate or a GRS Microblock or the Multipurpose BenchMate vise? Can you set oval stones in a BenchMate or Microblock? A GRS purchase is megabucks.Thank you for your videos, so helpful. Mary Jane Villot
@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith
@JulessaScofieldMetalsmith Год назад
Hello Mary Jane! No, I haven’t done a video on that particular topic yet so that’s a great one to add to the list. You can set any shaped stone using any one of the holding vices from GRS or other manufacturers. The key is to use Thermoloc or shellac to hold the setting, then clamp it into the holding vice to support both the setting and the entire piece - a setting compound is probably the second most-used item on my bench. I’m glad my videos have helped you! Feel free to reach out any time if you have questions, I’m happy to help. 😄 Have a wonderful day.
