A classic design collet for jewellery. Used for years and will continue to be so.
In this video I show how to make one entirely by hand.
I explain in depth and show clearly every stage of the process to finish one. Making an oval collet isnt too difficult but to finish one with perfect accuracy may take some practice.

Check out the new Diamond Mounter side channel!
Its called 'Diamond Mounter Clips'
Its compiled of short clips taken from previous videos to
highlight useful techniques and information I was teaching.
No intros, no outros just straight to the essence of what
was useful in the video!
Calling for new patrons!
With patrons support I will be able to offer far more information than I am currently able to.
With nearly 25 years of knowledge gained in the jewellery trade working with some of the best diamond mounters in the UK I can train practitioners of jewellery making, up to and far beyond the skill level usually found in High Street jewellers workshops.
Become a classic patron and you will not only be able to view part 2 of full instructional guides but also be thanked personally on the next youtube upload! You will also have access to all future uploads 2 weeks before they go live on youtube.
Official patrons have all the benefits of a classic patron but also gain access to regular exclusive content. Behind the scenes, personal jewellery projects Im working on, I share ideas for future videos, photos and stories from throughout my career as a professional jeweller.
Also Official patrons are welcome to suggest ideas for future videos and contact me anytime if they need advice for their own jewellery making endeavors.
Classic patronage is just £5 a month and to become an Official patron costs only £10 a month making Diamond Mounter patronage by far the best value way to gain access to online jewellery making courses.
As the number of full instructional guides continues to grow the value will be even more considerable.

There is now an entry level tier which costs just £1 a month.
Its named the Supporter tier which allows you to support the channel with out any substantial financial obligation. I will thank you personally on the next Diamond Mounter video uploaded.
My ambition is to share what I have learned throughout my career to as many people as possible.
My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter RU-vid channel.
If you appreciate the video content and find the information useful then why not become a patron and support its growth!

I can’t explain how happy I am to have found your channel! I’ve been a goldsmith for 3 years and I really struggle to find good informational videos online. A lot of people in this industry don’t want to share their secrets 😂

I hear that! I literally had to buy every book and search RU-vid for years because of the same super secrecy . But over the years I have come to know that for every stingy person their is one who will share all they know openly. Just gotta find them. 😂

Hi Chris, first of all, love that you are so honest and show your frustrations and struggles, which helps a beginner, perfectionist like me to know that this isn’t easy and I shouldn’t be hard on myself. Too many videos on here, that make everything look easy and seamless when in fact, it’s quite the opposite. So thank you 🙏. What solder do you use for the claws? I’m guessing medium??

Comparing this method to the emerald collet you made from a round collet, the oval could be shaped in a similar way by tightening the curve on two ends with half-round pliers instead of flattening with parallel pliers as you did with the emerald collet. Your explanation of the various techniques employed is very thorough.

Did you use hard solder for all the solder joins, if so how do you stop the others from melting? I’m getting pit marks, I can’t work out why. Thanks

Genki! Chris, what size metal(s) are you using as you fabricate these mounts? It would be great to know what you choose and why, project to project. Great video!! Love your sense of humor and goofiness/humility. Refreshing combined with your confidence; a perfect balance. Quick add: I watched a Blaine Lewis (stone setter) video on RU-vid; he uses burs on reverse to go slow and gentle on prongs...interesting idea.

Hey, I’m a student taking the second semester of a Jewlery fabrication class and I was wondering if you could do a video dedicated to bending silver into that “rainbow” shape to turn up for a collet. I’ve done 2 collets, one circle and one oval, but I always seem to struggle with the initial bending of my silver.

If you're in professional get-things-done mode making a ring with a collet like this for a customer in a workshop, how much time would you expect it to take from pile of metal until ready to deliver? I just make things for fun myself, so if I make something like this it probably takes a week or two at least since I don't have any deadlines and I can just work when I feel like it. How quickly should an actual pro make it for it to be reasonable business?
@DiamondMounter
@DiamondMounter 2 года назад
including time spent melting bits, milling out the metal and drawing down the wire for claws then getting on with making it im sure i could have this collet done in 1 working day

Yeah ovals. Fat ovals, narrow ovals, elongated ovals. Round is round, square is square, oblong is oblong, but ovals? If it's not something soft like a tourmaline, I've been known to just use the stone as a mandrel. If it's a soft stone? Fiddle, fiddle fiddle.

That citrine is actually called a "Ametrine" the dis-colour is "Amethyst" - when an Amethyst is heated up it turns yellow - when not heat evenly all over - you get a ½ and ½ - yellow and purple. This is another talk too much tooo much guy - makes my head spin - I'm out of here.
