Audacity 3.2 recently came out, and probably the biggest addition to the new version is real-time effects (or "real-time FX"). Now you can actually apply track effects non-destructively in Audacity! This is a feature that moves Audacity closer to being a full DAW (digital audio workstation) like Reaper, etc. It's a huge upgrade to Audacity, which I remind you is a FREE program.
This video will demonstrate what real-time FX are and how to use them. And will also show you how this is different from the previous versions of Audacity, where effects could only be applied destructively.

Saved my ass with this thank you. I recently downloaded the update and have been confused as to why my external plugins are applying to everything rather than my selected stems

Is there any way to apply the set Realtime Effects to other audio tracks if I have multiple tracks?
@theshadowdirector
@theshadowdirector Год назад
Really surprised me seeing this when I went back to audacity after several years. The software is still maybe not the best laid out and optimised for it at least compared to something like GarageBand. For example, when I add a reverb, I have to manually generate a silent track for that tail to drop off naturally.

Awesome, thanks brother. Question, can you add a realtime effect to the monitor and actually track/record with effects (like destructive but can't undo)?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording Год назад
I'm not sure. You CAN do that with Reaper - applying effects to inputs. Just not sure you can with Audacity. You might want to check the Audacity forum.

I love this non-destructive editing because I always apply effects on the whole track but I want to use Audacity's own effects I don't want to import other effects. Can I do that?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording Год назад
You can still use those effects, but NOT in a non-destructive way. Yeah, this is a weird shortfall, IHMO. But you can still apply all of Audacity's own effects to the audio itself the same way you always have been able to.

Hi, I've just found your channel. Your video was really useful: thank you. I was trying to use the Ambeo plugin for 8D audio and you helped me learn how to use real-time effects. It looks like Audacity only allows you to apply a particular configuration to each track, whereas I was hoping to be able to change the parameters throughout the track (e.g. moving the sound to the left at the beginning, then to the right for a while, etc.). Does this dynamic, flexible mode have a particular technical name, so I can know when Audacity implements it? Any idea if it can be expected soon? Thanks again! Edit: I've just found it's called "touch mode" in other programmes.
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording Год назад
I don't think you can do this in Audacity. But you CAN do it in Reaper. And you can use Ambeo in there also. Reaper is only $60 and is much more capable than Audacity for music. That might be the best way to go.

I didnt look on your channel, but how and where do I find those 3rd party fx. Do you have a quick compilation that I could single download or links to individual sites?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording Год назад
Those are all individual plugins from different companies I have loaded. Here are a few of the sources: acondigital.com/, www.antarestech.com/, www.waves.com/, valhalladsp.com/, www.izotope.com/. I've added them over the years and they are all paid plugins.

How do I record (resample) the results of my real time modifications. Example. I am playing around with the WahWah LFO over a bass track, and I want to record the results as a seperate track.
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 4 месяца назад
In order to have the effects actually "attach" to the audio, you'll need to Export that audio as a new file. Then you can import that file back in with the effects printed onto it. You export the audio the same as with any audio in Audacity - File>Export. The "Save As" menu item will just save the project and NOT an audio file.

is there a way to use built-in effects that comes with audacity?, I don't understand why we can't use those into the realtime effects lists

Do I miss something or is it not possible to use these real time effects while recording? So to manipulate sounds in a live performing session.
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording Год назад
I don't think so. But I honestly have not tried that, since that isn't really the main use of Audacity. My advice would be to just give it a try. If you don't have any, look here: plugins.audacityteam.org/

No I must have missed it to, real time means real time to me as in as you are recording, this is post recording processing which you can do anyway in Audacity so I'm confused.

PLEASEE why when i export the file the real time audio effects do not apply to the track, while they are clearly visible in the waveform. IVE BEEN searching EVERYWHERE and i can't find a solution.

It's a nice tuto. I don't know how to add these effects in audacity. For eg, I click on effects get more effects. I am on audacityteam page. I click on museFX effects. It send me to muse_hub page. I download muse_hub on computer. But what to do next ? Is muse_hub same as museFX ? how to connect this to audacity ? I'm lost from lost. Please tell me what i'm doing wrong.
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 8 месяцев назад
I just looked at this. You download MuseHub, yes. Then you install it. It becomes a program/app on your computer. But THEN you have to open the app and actually "Get" each effect you want. So Audacity will not see these effects until you individually click the "Get" button under each one. Once you do that, then open Audacity and you'll see it as available as a VST3 when you click Add Effect under Effects on the track panel.

How do I add VST Effects to Audacity?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording Год назад
This is a bit involved. So you should probably follow the steps here: support.audacityteam.org/basics/customizing-audacity/installing-plugins But if you already have VST effects on your computer, the new version will scan for them and add the ones you can use as Real-Time effects automatically. So when you click that Add Effect button on the track control panel on the left, you'll be able to see them.

@@HomebrewAudioRecording I really appreciate your efforts to educate and share. I know that's the official page for plugins, but it currently just provides 3 page links to huge lists of strange plugin names that I assume I would have to be an audio engineer to understand. For example SpikeQ Frequency transient shaper, or LALA Optical limiter/compressor. I'm sure that means something to a lot of people but I really just want to use the built-in Amplify, Truncate Silence, and Change Tempo in Real Time. Does anyone have a suggested list of plugins that parallel the built-in effects for Real Time use? I realize it's free software so I don't want to complain, but they made a lot of noise about their Real Time feature in 3.2, then left newbies and users with simple needs with no clear path to take advantage of this great new feature.
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording Год назад
@@MatterLabz Yeah, I get what you're saying. I think this was geared more toward folks who already have experience using non-destructive multi-track DAWs like Reaper, Adobe Audition, and even Pro Tools, but who also like the simplicity (and price of "free") of Audacity. So they are likely to already have 3rd party plugins and experience using them. Like I show in the video, there are disadvantages to both ways of doing things (destructive and non-destructive editing). And I don't quite understand why they didn't make their standard effects like you mentioned usable for the new real-time feature. Is there a specific reason you want to use the amplify, truncate silence, and change tempo effects as track effects instead of how they've always been used before?
