This guy doesn't understand the basic premise of climate change. the FIRST big bleaching event of the great barrier reef (due to high sea temperatures) was....the first of many. Just like with flooding in coastal areas, they will get more and more common until the new normal is an ocean that is too hot for coral to grow at all and it just completely dies out. The fact that it recovered after the first big event is something we can be thankful for, but it won't keep bouncing back as the range of temperatures continues to move upwards. The highs are higher, and the lows are higher as well.

One thing thing does bother me about Mr. Lomborg's overview - at least here - is that it's so all-encompassing. As if our debate about climate change is simply the whole world, all at once, and so should be discussed strictly in the context of a global problem. But when you break it down, some damn horrible things go on - which over time add up to destructive effects on a bigger scale. An ex., killing the orangutans in Indonesia for profit, taking them to the brink of extinction and deforestation adding to that from illegal logging and goldmining. And then the deforestation of the Amazons due to fuckin' cattle ranching; there, the rainforest absorbs 1/4 of the CO2 absorbed by all the land on Earth. And then the oceans: among other urgencies is the total destruction of coral due to human population growth; where 25% of marine animals live and 90% of them rely on coral for their homes, hunting grounds, and nutrient sources. All these atrocities to intelligent life add up to the greenhouse effect and global warming in the long run.
