The Thompson was designed as a "trench broom" and ,therefore, is meant to be fired from the hip. In John Thompson's original design there was no buttstock.

I built an ar9 tommy gun . Its super rad. Gibbz side charging upper , Faxon 9mm barrel , faxon bolt carrier , LRBHO glock lower , all wood furniture plus angled foregrip , Troy irons with blitzkrieg chevron . Thing is fun to shoot , plus I get the best of both worlds, new meets old kinda... . Need to get a binary trigger for it next . Great vid gents.

the thompson was outdated and obsolescent by the second world war, second, america didnt "win" the world war all on its own, the allies won because of their ability to work together as a team to make up for their shortcomings while playing to all their strengths. overall, the weapons played a far less significant roll than people (mainly americans) like to admit.

That Thompson has a M1928 pattern lower on an M1A1 upper, kinda weird really. You should get a hand guard band to prevent the welded rib from possibly cracking
@oc4074
@oc4074 3 года назад
So the upper an lower are compatibles between all models?
@johnbeauvais3159
@johnbeauvais3159 3 года назад
O C Yes they are, but there are some distinct differences like the tabs on the selectors got more basic with the M1 model and they deleted the removable stock element. The upper is where all the main differences happened with changes to the machining and bolts with the M1 having a spring loaded firing pin and a triangular hammer and the M1A1 having just a milled in protrusion on the bolt face. The 1921, 1928 variants of course had the Blish lock system with the bronze piece to help delay opening which doesn’t seem to have done anything.

Thompson is meant to be fired tucked under your armpit in full auto because that was the doctrine for close quarters combat back then. Even handguns were used point shooting at close range. Aiming down sight from the shoulder was reserved for targets further away and reading 1940s manuals it was supposed to be done in semi auto only. Even on handguns sights were used only for targets further away and that’s why they often had very small sights that are very difficult to use in cqb combat
@ccfmfg
@ccfmfg 3 года назад
That is a M1 Thompson Upper and it does not lock before firing. It is just Straight Blowback Operation. The M1928 Thompson does not lock either but it has the Brass Blish Wedge that slightly Delays the Breech Action from opening upon firing. It also slight slows the Full Auto Cyclic Rate as compared to with out it.

I just wish I could shoot my guns. Haven't shot in 3 months since I have depleted my what I thought at one time was a good stash. I refuse to shoot my last 300 rounds of 5.56 or 250 rounds of 9mm. And cannot bring myself to pay 80 cents a round. I guess I'm going to have to. This time last year I was proud of my 2k rounds of 5.56 and 700 rds of 9mm. What a fool I was. The Thompson machine gun's barrel axis is substantially higher than the shoulder pocket hold making it rise as it fires. Conversely, the AR platforms have a barrel axis that is inline with the shoulder pocket making it much easier to maintain a hold on point of impact with follow up shots or in full auto fire. The only drawback for the AR platform, (if you want to call it that) is the sight axis is substancially higher over the barrel axis. But if you're used to keeping the sights plumb, this serves to have a longer point blank (round hitting plus or minus 6 inches over or under your point of aim) range. due to the round having to travel farther to cross the first zero plane. If both have a maximum height over zero of 6 inches, the higher sight will have a longer point blank range.

I carried Thompson for a short time. I qualified with M16 and M14 but was only issued M14. Since I spent so much time in helicopters and jeeps, tried to get a M16 but instead I got a Thompson. I believe it was heavier than the M14. It jamed on me too many times. I now have CMMG in 45 and love it. It is not fully automatic, however, I do have a binary trigger. I have a AR15 as well in 5.56. No jams in the CMMG with thousands of rounds.

Most rifle caliber machine guns are open bolt and lock before they fire. The exceptions are mostly old closed bolt designs originally intended to be water cooled, like the Maxims and Brownings, and a few roller-delayed blowbacks. The Lewis (also FG42, Minimi/M249, and M60), BAR (also Mag/M240), Degtyaryov (DP28, RPD, DShK), SG43, MG34, MG42/MG3, Bren, PKM, Negev, etc. are all open bolt and all lock before they fire.

Apples to oranges if you compare sights. You need a 1928 or M1 that had adjustable sights and a cutts comp.
@snowstalker36
@snowstalker36 3 года назад
If it has M1928 stampings, I am guessing it's a M1928 receiver reworked to the M1 SMG standard during the war. There should be an ordnance marking from that, near the muzzle on my rifles. M1928s had a flip up ladder rear sight, and were almost always delivered with a barrel with cooling fins and a compensator. Those last two features rarely made it through the war though since they would get tossed with a worn barrel.

10.8 if you wanna get technical and depending on the variant. My recall was about 15 years ago, regardless of my guess, that is pretty damn heavy and the weight doesn’t even help manage recoil much. I appreciate the history of the Thompson, but as shown in this video, there are better options unless the potential buyer is feeling nostalgic and wants a piece of history.
