It's important to have confidence in the authenticity of your bullion--especially with gold and silver on the upswing. So how do these near-identical rounds compare with each other and some of the more common tests? We'll look at these pieces under the microscope of the calipers, ping tester, magnets, scale, and finally the Sigma to see how they stack up and along the way I'll show you what to look for so you trust your bullion and your eventual buyer will trust it, too!
In this video I mention Wizard Coin Supply as a source for Harris brand and other loupes and lots of other related supplies and equipment. You can find them online here:

Nice video. We just went through these steps with a walking liberty half we picked up from a coin shop junk pile. It weighed a bit too much, failed the ping test, had some surface abnormalities, and the reeding was a bit thinner. Returning to the shop and explains our process, they offered us a replacement and let us keep the imposter for our learning pile.

I can kind of tell the difference in sound from a ping, but I wouldn’t really feel comfortable without the assistance of a ping app.

There's no point to ping test without the app. Any metal will give off a ping when struck. Without the app, it's only good for ID'ing a tungsten cored fake gold because the counterfeiters don't know how to electroplate gold on tungsten (yet), but can give false negatives if the planchets have microcracks due to substandard processing.

I see a lot of trade dollars on whatnot and other sites that maybe fake , who knows…, be very careful folks. Also 8 reales too

Great advice. Be really careful buying trade dollars and really anything online from sellers without a track record of many years and hundreds of positive feedback. So many fakes out there!

@@Dub-C_Coins Yes. As a relatively long term collector of trade dollars I think there appears to be a disproportionate amount of fakes (or at least 'questionable' items) out there. I have even seen (very good) counterfeit silver examples and I have one historical, but still silver fake TD. And I like a backlit loupe - amazingly good for determining if coins are cleaned. Buyer beware............ Nice video, thank you!

A dial caliper is easy to use and doesn't need batteries CruzBlanca.
