A 70 AD/CE Greek woman takes care of you! You've just escaped from Israel, you're sick, and I'm using actual medical exam techniques from Hippocrates and Galen. Feat. cooking sounds, soft spoken chatter, strong whispers visual triggers, and so much tender personal attention.
If you like my storytelling skills, and want to keep in touch with me, I can email you neat goodies (and secret downloads) at byjenfinelli.com/you-want-heroes-and-fairies That way we can stay in touch if my RU-vid disappears.
There's also a bonus medical video for you here: too: landing.mailerlite.com/webfor...
DON'T FORGET: if you get shown ADS AT THE END OF THIS VIDEO, BECAUSE YT IS TRYING TO KILL ASMR AND HAS TAKEN THE CHOICE AWAY FROM CREATORS AND WE'RE NO LONGER ALLOWED TO CHOOSE WHERE ADS GO - you can watch ad-free for free at odysee.com/@actualdoctorasmr:f Or become a patron, and I'll straight up let you download my vids: patreon.com/becominghero
The views in the video aren't necessarily mine; you may have noticed by now I try to capture little-heard perspectives in history, such as the position of mixed race people in Meiji Japan ( • A Realistic MEIJI JAPA... ) or aboard a pirate ship ( • A Realistic 1725 Pirat... ), or the unusual existentialism of Joan of Arc's "voices" ( • ASMR You're Joan of Ar... ). That's what's up.
***Mental health: If you have trouble finding a therapist, please visit betterhelp.com/doctorjen for an online option. I affiliated with them to get you a special link for 10 percent off teletherapy, and they pay me if you use my link, so it's a win win - but IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD ONLINE THERAPY, check your options with your local health department or openpathcollective.org. Also:
-- Phone number for self-unaliving helpline US: 1-800-273-8255
-- Crisis text line: Text HOME to 741741 in US; Text 686868 in Canada
-- International suicide numbers: www.opencounseling.com/suicid...

I really hope these resources help; they are evidence-based and they have helped me. If they don't help, go find some that do. Your life matters.

Actually, a couple of St. Paul's female cousins from Tarsus were physicians who set up free clinics at Mt. Pelion, in direct competition to the temple of the god Asclepius. St. Zenaida took special interest in pediatrics and mental illness, while St. Philonella experimented to prove that natural philosophy was a better source of medicine than magic, as well as treating unknown illnesses and hopeless cases. St. Philip the Dragon's four prophetic daughters in the Bible were also renowned physicians. We know this because the lore collector Papias interviewed the daughters of Philip as part of his now-lost five volume book on eyewitnesses of Jesus, and that Drs. Zenaida and Philonella were his mentors when he entered a new monastery set up next to their Pelion clinic.

Well that is high praise indeed! I kind of think the one I did on espionage in 1575 might be a little better as far as some of the strange politics and medicine goes, if you like other kinds of history, too. There's also one where you're the first doctor of Malawi, which was challenging because there's a lot of colonial language that we wouldn't use now a days.

Finally! I'm always frustrated when 'history-themed' role plays are more aesthetic than they are immersive. Layering real historical details into the performance here really brings the audience into the scene.
@realrogue

There are a few aesthetic details that weren't right ;_; But it's my absolute best effort, with a lot of time spent looking at pictures of urns and things to understand their clothes.

@@realrogue Don't worry about being completely accurate, or being able to find all the right costume or prop pieces. I'm not an expert myself so I didn't notice that much. One thing that did stand out to me was how many times the character had to adjust her head covering/palla, as it wasn't secured. But to me, this was part of her character-building. She was recently freed and married and subject to all of these new rules, and doesn't have many items of her own-- she was able to get a folio from her former master, as it's a newfangled object others likely wouldn't know to miss, and she has her beautiful earrings her husband gifted to her... but she's lacking certain practical things that would be passed down to her from female household members like pins... and as she served in the male portion of her former master's house, she may not have been able to nick any of those.
@realrogue

I can’t help but think how the medieval concept of humors would work especially with the blood letting 😅
@realrogue
@realrogue 7 месяцев назад
Yes, this is actually where that stuff came from! If you watch the 1575 video I did on espionage, that medical exam is based on a textbook that's literally a commentary on Galen. Because of how peoples' obsession with Greek and Roman culture through the Catholic Holy Roman empire was later transmitted to all Western belief systems, it was actually quite hard for science to advance beyond Galen for quite some time. It was actually early Renaissance and Enlightenment scholars who seem to have pushed this idea that the medieval period was the "Dark Ages" and the GrecoRoman era was the highlight of history ("the good old days"). The problem with that belief system was that it fixed people's eyes on an era with very strict and problematic oppression of women and any religious minorities, and tended to justify imperialism (a term literally derived from imperial conquest). I would argue that this obsession seriously marked even the colonial period, as conquest was simply "Roman" and therefore okay. This is why it's important to me not to use the term "Dark Ages" to apply to the medieval period, because not only is that quite teleological, but it undermines the advances people were trying to make (and indeed, did make, in textiles, agriculture, and industry) AGAINST and DESPITE the cultish GrecoRoman obsession. There are definitely people who disagree with me because of the way we're still taught some of these stereotypes about timelines in high school. (High school, I find, tends to be the greatest enemy to true history education because of the lack of primary sources and investigative thinking taught in most schools) But in reality, you are absolutely correct, because if you read Galen, and then read medicine textbooks as late as 1575, there's direct inheritance. Anyone who argues that the medieval obsession with the Greeks led to the so-called Enlightenment hasn't read a textbook from the medieval period. That said, there is STILL a lot of good in Hippocrates and Galen. There's a reason especially I read the whole Hippocratic oath and love his emphasis on evidence-based (as far as he could tell), all-people care.

@realrogue I'd like to tack onto this, it wasn't a strictly European thing to be 'obsessed' with the Greeks and Romans, as the Arabs of the Muslim Golden Age in the Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) in Iraq, during the early Medieval period translated many of the Greek and Roman authors and the Arabic word for Philosophy, Falsafah, is a direct derivative of the Greek. Also, they combined the medical texts they translated and improved upon the practices involved, especially by including the ritual washing common in Islamic culture at the time, and this translated to several European states as well! Spain, for instance, because of the influence of the Umayyads and other Emirates in Iberia had much better medical practices than did England, France, Germany, etc. specifically because of these advances in medical practice.
@realrogue
@realrogue 6 месяцев назад
Ooh this is neat stuff. I actually didn't know this. I suspect ritual washing that so helped hygiene in Islamic culture really has its origins in the Persian Zorastrian culture...video on that in about a month!

Humor theory is still around in "Islamic medicine" aka "Greek medicine." The main difference is that Islamic medicine dislikes alcohol and sugar, whereas medieval European humor theory thought alcohol and sugar were usually good. For example, the gentleman on Tribal People Try who is a village physician in Pakistan. Dr. Oz has Western medical degrees, but also learned Islamic medicine (probably smart for understanding his Turkish patients). Medieval European medical texts often alter Galen's advice to fit with local conditions and personal experience. For example, St. Hildegard of Bingen's distrust of cow milk was because cows carried disease locally.

First of all! I absolutely adored this! If you ever thought about making another one that took place in ancient classical Greece I’d watch it over and over! Second! This is such a weird question, but what is the song you used in the beginning, I can’t seem to get it out of my head!

I'm doing one on Seleucid greece, and then a Persian one that references classical Greece, but I've had some trouble nailing down a good segue for classical Greece. That's actually what I set out to do and then it morphed into those two videos instead. So lots of Greek stuff coming down the pipe. I think for the classical Greek one I'm going to center it around a particular historical figure like a warrior of some kind, if I end up making it happen. I probably will.

They're specially trained, and with my particular issues they've forced me to calm down a lot. I don't recommend them unless you've taken a course or otherwise really learned how to train birds, since it's nothing like training dogs and they're incredibly demanding. They can't stay in cages (ours don't) except for limited time, and they got us evicted, actually. But Cinnamon can talk and reminds me who I am, and pistachio helps me calm down in public, and Mango alerts us emotionally if someone is ill. Each has their own precious skill. I've done a video on them at RU-vid.com/c/becomingareallifesuperhero , about airlines preventing ESA birds from traveling. I'd love it if you checked that out and signed the petition to keep me and my little friends together!

High praise! Mostly trying to model critical historical thought, actually, so up your alley--it's so important to me that people don't just believe what they see in text books, but consider primary sources, and even with those sources, consider where they're coming from. Next month there's a video critical of Herodotus you might like--questioning whether we can really trust his accounts, which we've often euro-centrically whole-heartedly trusted. But I want to be critical of historocritical thought as well, recognizing that true open mindedness leaves room for events outside my "Western" conception, and does not try to decide if something is "possible," but if something has EVIDENCE for it, "possible" or not in my own experience. So--that's where I'm coming from, history teaching wise!

So there's some debate about exact birth and death time! I was reading this paper (which I largely disagree with) about when he was born from Muhlenberg college that changed the date by what seems to be a few decades. I think the best academic book on the subject (which I need to finish reading) is THE JESUS LEGEND by Gregory A. Boyd, and if I'm not mistaken he's placed the birth somewhere around 3-4 BCE? Long story short, though, you're right that our little helper person doesn't really know the date correctly, and has birth/death swapped. A lot of misinformation/rumors would have been going around at that time, making a lot of information incorrect. Maybe her husband, being Greek, doesn't really know his Jewish calendar or the goings-on closer to the heart of the Roman empire or closer to Palestine XD (Or maybe I misspoke, choose which one you believe, lol)

This might be the first time I’ve used my minor in classical studies since I graduated 😂 edit: I’m loving the historical accuracy and the choice of perspective. You chose a great concept (talking to an Israelite I believe?) to be able to explain the history and context in a natural way. I studied Health and Healing in Ancient Greece while studying abroad in Greece and got to visit two different modern versions of Hippocrates’ garden and a number of healing sites. As a group of women, my class often joked about how off base physicians were when it came to womens health. I was surprised to learn that modern gynecological tools were used so far back, and unsurprised to learn that most of what Hippocrates learned about women came from midwives and female healers who carried generational knowledge. I would love to see asmr videos from other ancient cultures and will be subscribing!!

We can indeed visit Greek temples, kyría -- however, we cannot do so until after they have been rededicated to Tetragrammaton. This is different from what you implied. We have suffered, but it is nothing compared to what the Son has endured.
@realrogue
@realrogue 6 месяцев назад
At that time in history there wasn't any Greek temple officially dedicated to Hashem, and there were strict rabbinic (and Torah-based) prohibitions against entering places dedicated to elohim acherei. This is 70 CE, remember. Just had a huge revolt partly around religious purity, and the Sanhedrin was Pharisee-controlled, so not only do you have the Torah rules but also the reverse rules that got Rav Shaul (Paul) in trouble: that even Torah-observant "ger toshav" or non-J ews were kept out of the J ewish temple. That separation went both ways from a J ewish perspective and culturally was quite strong despite the growing movement of Netzari believers crossing the divide. And even so, Netzari before the death of Polycarp were generally observing most J ewish law (or at least taught to do so), plus keeping cultural mandates (like women wearing head coverings). A strict Torah interpretation for the most part would disallow even worshipping in a rededicated Greek temple given the injunctions to only offer sacrifices in Yerushalayim--the site itself was important. So at that time, a J ewish person could not go to the cult of Asklepios for healing, or offer sacrifices anywhere not the Temple (hence why the Samaritan woman at the well in Yochanan mentions offering sacrifices in the mountains vs the Temple). While there were Hellenistic J ews who obviously wouldn't keep this, and J ewish thought has always contained diversity, a refugee from the rebellion would be unlikely to be as liberal, and in this case, this one is more conservative. So conservative that they are still keeping Sukkot on the run. But that's not to say that there wouldn't have been people of your thought at the time--just that to accept the invitation of a pagan to a pagan Temple would have been a pretty big scandal.

I just wanted to congratulate you and thank you for your many wonderful ASMR videos -- which I have only just discovered. I have a degree in Asian History from Wheaton College in Norton, MA. It occurred to me that in your extensive research, you may have learned about the great physician Ogata Kōan (緒方 洪庵, August 13, 1810 - July 25, 1863). Whether you are familiar with him or not, I would like to mention that if the subject interests you, you can read more about Ogata in Chapter 9 of the book called "Osaka, the Merchant's Capital of Early Modern Japan" by James L. McClain and Wakita Osamu, et al. (Cornell University Press, 1999). When I was reading that book, I made an audio transcript of the relevant part, because dealing with works in audio form can be easier given that I additionally have a nonverbal learning disability. If you wish, I will send the audio file to you, but if I were to send the file without asking first, you might think it was part of some plan to destroy you by sending a virus. I have been deeply moved by the science fiction computer game franchise Mass Effect, particularly by the character of the ex-special operator, medical doctor, and polymath genius Mordin Solus. I composed a piece of fan fiction that might be considered the rough equivalent of the Hippocratic Oath as devised by Mordin’s species, the salarians. Unfortunately, I've encountered issues logging into my account on fanfiction.net to add this new piece of writing. I am still trying to resolve this issue. If you're interested, I'd be happy to share the fan fiction text with you.@@realrogue

I was raised Christian, and I am currently looking into Wicca cause two of my cousins practice it. But like many leaving The Modern Church a good sum of us are still greatful to Jesus not so much as an entity but as a man who did with his best intentions change the world. So, kinda seeing the start of its history from a medical standpoint is kinda neat. Though now in late 2023/early 2024 CE things are changing...both medically and religiously.
@realrogue
@realrogue 6 месяцев назад
I've been thinking about this comment today. If you're still looking into faith options, and you like the nature emphasis of Wicca, you may find truth in Messianic Judais.m. Yeshua historically was always Jewish, and many of the ills of Christianity come from when Constantine essentially divorced the "church" from its Jewish roots. After the last Jewish "bishop," Polycarp, died, Roman and Greek gender and control mores seeped into the religion ("the holy ROMAN Catholic church"). The medieval period saw many beautiful advances, and much of our historical knowledge is thanks to the dedication of monks scribing away in solitude, but there are a lot of evils from then that I think are still apparent today due to the early Roman influence. When I started looking up the Tanakh ("Old Testament") in Hebrew, and understanding the Brit Chadashah ("New Testament") in its Jewish context, my healing began. You're always welcome to check out the Torah playlists here in this channel, or hit me up via email (there's an email list in the description) if you ever want me to send you a virtual link to my Rabbi's service. No pressure, just thought I'd share the option in case you ever wanted it. Of course, the most important thing isn't what we think we would like in a belief system, but what is actually true, and I'll fully admit my path may be false, but it's what historical and scientific inquiry has led me to believe best fits reality. Everyone's journey is different, though, and I wish you really well on yours. Thanks again for hanging out with me.

That's very productive criticism! I hear you. I'm trying to adjust each video to the character (and the scenario), and in this one you're gravely ill, so it's a little more "intense." The character in the newest Malawi video talks very fast because she's kind of a gossipy 1920s lady. But my Viking woman, and my Meiji Japanese woman, both speak quite slowly. Personally, I prefer slower speech, but I'm afraid of losing eyes to the fast-paced algorithm, I get nervous, and after recording like four different takes of the beginning to make sure I got all the cues right, going in and out of frame over and over, I did speed up a little. I'll give myself permission to take longer. The white noise...I've been working on it. ;_; It's a nightmare. My mics are very sensitive and my house is very loud. But I think in the newest Malawi video perhaps you'll find it's better. We shall see.

@realrogue
@realrogue 7 месяцев назад
@another_blacktomcat Yeah, that's usually done for if you record asynchronously. I don't record asynchronously anymore, though--I edited the backgrounds, soundscapes, and b roll together into a finished video BEFORE recording myself, and then played that video in the bg of my livestreaming software while I "livestreamed" to my desktop. That's why I step out of frame before the intro credits roll--because the credits are literally sewn into the video already and the whole video, except not me, is already done and on greenscreen (so if I didn't step out of frame I'd block the credits). So the video and audio get recorded into the same software (OBS) at the same time, and when I stop recording I have the finished video. It meant I had to do a couple takes for when I missed cues to step out, but in the end basically you have no editing to do, and I've found that keeps me much more organized. So yeah. Audio/video get processed at the same time, because it's basically livestreamed. It looks in sync to me, but maybe you have a very high fps eye. I can add delays to my audio if I choose, but I'm very afraid of changing anything after how long it took to get both microphones synced with each other live. I recorded this the same day as the Milk Sick video. Does that one seem unsynced to you?

Meli Meli is the Greek Galenic ancestor to Marmelade! It eventually evolved away from Quince and Honey to Oranges (I don't know why I'm capitalizing these random words but there you go). Any time you can't find something from one of my videos, let me do the research for you, and use the sources at the end of the video. A lot of these things aren't accessible if you don't know where to look. In this case, find Galen's book that was written that year (It's free online)--I have linked it in the resources--or check out the History Of Marmelade (also mentioned back there), which is where I got the idea for the video. Galen has a recipe where you can make it yourself! Be super careful though, as not all his recipes are safe, and certainly I wouldn't rely on Meli Meli to do everything he says it will. I would go to a doctor.
