@NorCal715 if I had 1/10th of your brains I'd be happy. I sure wish I could make repairs like you do. I enjoy watching Mr. Carlson's Lab channel also. Thanks for all you do.
Oh cool, a Pro Scan video repair. Wondering about any videos regarding the Bill Cheek mods? I have a few 2006's I wanted to mod and use as a bank of scanners with the CE-232 interface and I got overwhelmed with MCU's and other interface capabilities research to control the operation of the scanner with a computer control... among Sigint or as of late Shazam style signal identification... I was thinking using like feedlines into the GRC or basically like SDR# or other SDR application and also other discrimination tap and pan adapter capabilities. Then of course other priorities. Thanks for sharing!
@@norcal715 I'm so trying. Great diving board to move me into learning more. We'll see how this winter season projects progress. Really would be awesome to use the signals identification application like the Shazam style app and others. Even work on some coding would be great.
I have the same scanner, 400 Channel Pro 2005 which I purchased in 1988. I havent used it in some time and wonder if you can give me some idea how I can check each bank to see what frequencies are in it? Great job with this fix by the way-extremely well done.
Assuming the 9 volt backup battery is still good, then you will have to step through each channel one by one. If you have not used it within the last couple of years the battery is probably dead and it will have forgotten all of its programmed channels. These scanners did not have a non-volatile memory meaning that it is stored in ram that requires constant battery power.
Thanks-interesting point that when I turned it on there was a chirping sound and of course that was a battery problem. I replaced the 9v (Energizer) (use before 2008!) battery and of course the chirping stopped--funny thing is I measured the old 9v battery and it only read about 2v yet the frequencies are all still in the memory. Sometimes you get a break I guess! @@norcal715
Well had the cover off my PRP2004 today that is also suffering low audio extension speaker or built in speaker hoping to find a bulging cap as you did Nor Cal. No such luck.....nothing looking out of order. Thats about the limit of the work I can do.....any further tips NorCal....or anybody else.
Excellent.....my PRO2004 scanner bought new in the mid 70s I think....or was it later...not sure. But its been great for all those years....I mainly listen to aircraft....being a PPL its great to know whats going on. Norcal recently my 2004 volume like your 2005 has dropped way off...still hear it but need it at 75% to be ok ish. Sounds like I may have the same prob....I am not very electronic savvy.but am ok with a soldering iron.....I have a basic multi tester....but not a cop tester.....any tips when I take a look inside my 2004.
New in the midish late 80's I would just shotgun that capacitor that I changed. BEWARE, on mine the silk screening on the board was backwards. Pay attention to the polarity of the old capacitor. I have a YT Short where it re-failed a few months later because I put it in backwards. Didn't follow my own advice and mark the negative of the old capacitor.
@@norcal715 Thankyou.....hoping I can see a nice bulging cap when I have a look. They are a real nice scanner arnt they....hope I can save it. I am like you....have one in my workshop.....no police to listen to here in the UK....all police radio is scrambled...was good in the old days though saying that.
I'd take it apart and put the 15 dollar electroluminescent backlight panel in it while I was in there. I have to do my pro 2022. Let her shine in all her 1980s beauty lol
nice fix. i got lucky yesturday, when i'm out and about i scan the curbs for flatscreens. i found 2 suffering from tds with the screens bashed {parts models},. later i found a 70 inch lg in a pile of garage cleanout, the neighbor walked over and said they offered it to him, and said it had a bad "tube"... i plugged it up and played a dvd/hdmi for about 2 hours. i can't find anything wrong with it so far.... maybe "tube" means remote control..? lol
Hey Steve,... Question, where did you find that particular type of ESR meter with the meter deflection type display. I've got an old vtvm and I'm thinking I might convert it to an ESR meter... Almost all the ESR meters today are digital and I feel they don't give as good a reading as the metered type...unless you spend several hundred dollars.!! The 75-100 dollar type don't seem that good. Ty and good job.
I built one about 10 years ago. I built a version that I found from a RU-vid channel and that is the best tool I own. It has solved more problems on devices I have repaired than any other tool. Built the circuit and used an old analog VU meter movement I salvaged from a Radio Shack cassette tape deck I took apart decades ago. Used mostly scavenged parts so it cost me almost nothing but time.
@@jp040759 ...I would love it if you could show me that channel, i have several analog meter movements and would love to build one, I just dont trust some of the digital ESR meters, some aren't as accurate as the analog ones.... I have one and it showed a bad cap as being in tolerance.!!
Almost 300K when I retired it. Oil and filter every 3000 miles. It had the 2.9 EFI. never had an engine problem(except fords TFI ignition and I always kept a spare with me). Did have to replace the A4LD a couple times
I figure since this video is only from a year ago so hopefully you can help me, I got a realistic pro 2020 for free and when I turn it on there is no audio whatsoever aside from the button beeps and it also won’t receive anything that I know for sure are vhf and uhf, I assume it needs to be recapped but not sure
