How to Paint Silver Armour: Speed & Quality!

Hey guys, today we're teaching you how to paint metallic Warhammer minis again, this time it's on armoured infantry! We're teaching how to paint a silver space marine, however you could use the techniques here to paint any armoured surface/miniature, Age of Sigmar, 40k, Dungeons & Dragons, whatever!
Don't forget - with these techniques you can always change the colours, to tint your silvers blue, purple, green, or even swap the silver out for gold, it'll work for any metallic scheme!

Love seeing some TMM love. The contrast between shiny metal paint and the more Matt standard paint always pops better (well for me anyway) good job getting it to show on camera, metallic s can be a right pig to photo.

That's a really nice final result, a proper natural metal finish always looks so good when it's done well! You can always amp up the metallic sheen with a satin varnish too! Also, if you're struggling with transfers try using setting solutions like micro set and micro sol, I find I get the best results by wetting the area with micro set, then placing the transfer on and rolling a cotton bud over it to press it into the surface and push out any air bubbles or wrinkles, then I put a little more micro set over the top and once that is atleast mostly dry, slap some micro sol on over the top, that should really make the transfers conform to the surface and take on a 'painted on' look

Hey Michael, that's great to hear! Firstly go to Google and get some inspiration from nature. Secondly, stick with colours that tend to look 'soft' at least in the middle or end stages. Also, check out our how to paint fur video😀

Amazing video again Byron. The warm tone metallic looks really good, almost like the marine is walking at sunset or on Mars. The base really worked in my opinion too. I have recently made a Milliput cloak and it is terrible, ruined the entire model in my opinion. I need to practise MUCH more with the sculpting aspect (first ever sculpt) Keep up the great work. You have been a life saver over the various lockdowns!

Hey dude, give 'milliput & greenstuff mix' a search and check the results out, it can be useful to have a middleground between the two different sets of properties, let us know if you try it out! (Don't be disheartened by it not seeming to mix at first, it does! Mix the two separately and then combine)

So I’m a little late to the party on this video lol but I’m really looking forward to applying some of these ideas to my void dragon, get that nice smooth shiny body but using some of the blues as you suggest to give it a colder feel and fit in with my army colours and basing a little better 😁

Neat! How would you approach a more shining silver armor? Would you simply remove the Doombull from the mix, or is there something you would put in its stead during the build up? Are there any other silvers from Citadel you think would be nice (Leadbelcher, Runefang, etc)? Or contrast? Just saw your vampire video, I like how shiny it is to build up, but instead of the red black, going for more silver / shiny polished steel.

I'm considering something along the lines of using a metallic base spray, using this drybrush technique to get some highlights on it, going a little heavy-handed on the edges, and then using the SpeedPaint V2 metallic contrast colours to get some good golds and other metallic colours going!

Cheers dude, we're upgrading our set up to improve these, some of them just don't come out right, with metallics (particularly true metallics) presenting their own special set of issues! It should be a constant in future videos, once we've settled on a perfect process.

Hey buddy, it depends on how saturated you would want the blue aspect. Colours like Dark Reaper or Incubi Darkness would add a hint where is more pure blues would be very noticeable. 😊

@@ArtisOpus Sorry to bother you again with a follow-up question but my local hobbystore (in Spain) said they have discontinued paints like dark reaper (and incubi darkness feels like it has more of a green-ish hue?) would something like vallejo gunmetal blue 70.800 do the trick? I have not found many conversion charts and your expert insight will be most helpful, cheers!

How would you do black metallic armor? I’m painting Deathwatch and want the metallic black but don’t know how to incorporate dry brushing edges, highlights, etc. Black metallic base and use lighter black Vallejo paints to pick out highlights? Dry brush lightly with silver? What would you do?

Hey dude, there are a couple of ways you can go about this: 1) start light and wash and shade darker 2) a hybrid going from dark to lighter but then washing darker again for depth I prefer 2, there's a colour called Black Metal from Scale75, starting from this and adding a little bit of silver works great, you can then mix black paint in with a black wash to pull things back. Hope that's explained okay, it's actually very similar to how I approach the red on tonight's Blood Angel video😊🤞

Its funny you posted this video when you did. I was just looking at my necrons from the indomitus box wondering to myself how I'd drybrush them. Now I know. What colour would you mix in to make a cool silver instead of a warm one and why is it huldra blue? I never considered putting a varnish between the primer and the silver to get a more shiny finish. Definitely going to try that.

Rock on dude, let us know how it goes - as I stressed in the video you can tint things *any* way you want, so if you wanted to drop some browns and greens in there or anything at all it'll all work! Can swap out washes too, go heavier, etc :)

Used exact same paints and your dry brushes but when I dry brush the first coat of silver on I loose a lot of the black lining that should be left between the armour panels?? I tried less paint and not so much water in the dry brush and even then next size brush down for more control but still loose a lot of the crisp black lines you have left over?? Any tips, thanks??

Hey mate, yes/no - metallics are amongst the most abusive, however - in drybrushing we don't ever soak the brush, so they don't have nearly as much opportunity for saturating the bristles, that's why you'll see ancient metallic Series D brushes of mine on the channel, which don't look nearly the 2 years old that they are :)

What kind of varnish do you recommend for mostly metallic schemes like this? Will matte take away too much of the sheen?

Hey dude, I'd never go matte, but satin+ should be fine, too glossy can disrupt things, monutorum varnish is actually a pretty good sheen level IMO, good protection, and convenient from a can, too :)

I'm curious to know if there's a way to drybrush the shoulder pads so where the trim is a different colour? My custom chapter is purple but the inner part of the pad is black, so how would you tackle that?

Hey dude, I often hack my way around this with washes, it won't be perfect, but you can use a black wash/contrast in the recess really easily, and it'll overpwer the purple, particularly if your final highlight to the purple is a fair bit lighter/more pastel. I hope that makes sense? I'll do some examples of this on the SCE from Dominion in the next week or so!

Awesome tutorial as always. Would. Love to see you tackle some Artisan Guilds patreon 3D print painting or some of the models from Archvillain patreon 3D prints as well. The artisan are great for the world of warcraft style and the Archvillain prints are more horror oriented. Both great models that would lend themselves to your painting.

Have you tried applying your stippling, buffing, dry brushing method to skin? Seems like it might be a good way to pain a muscular body. But obviously with skin tones lol.

Also, on a serious note - give me an address, or a PO box and I will buy you a rotating base to display these on for the end shot. They are like £10 on ebay/amazon. It will step your production up a lot and make it easier to display your final minis!

Honestly given the strength of vallejo game air silver it's probably 1:10 black-silver... Do a test yourself and match the colour on my palette, you'll be able to work out a very close match and then make a big bottle, which is a great idea.

It helps you get to the bits you need to, change angles, etc :). Imagine you want to highlight an eye... and the perfect angle to do so has a chainsaw in the way :D

Yo man quick update on your new series d brushes a couple of weeks down the line... I purchased my great unclean one, assembled the fat, disgusting Lord of Papa Nurgle, thought it best I don't jump straight in after never using your brushes and potentially ruin a 60quid model through my own lack of patience haha 😃. So I decided to assemble my Primaris Assault Intercessors ans practice on these models first (utterly beautiful models as well may I say from Geedubs)....and they are utterly amazing sir! So happy I shelled out man gettin similar results on silver armor as yourself just working through to a pure silver spot highlight. I have a quick question man if you would be so kind, I have assembled one of the captains without his helmet. Do you think I can buff his bald little head with a skin tone as you did on this video with the helmet?

Hey dude, thanks so much! ...now paint Papa! :D For sure, a couple of important notes: 1.) Any over-texturing from basecoat/previous layers will really show up 'grains' at that scale, so take extra care to keep his pate smooth as a babies' bottom! 2.) Go slow, don't rush, get in close 3.) Baby-D, dampening pad (go easy here, it's a small brush, it can get saturated with water easily) 4.) Good luck! Keep us posted - let me know in a future vid, as notifications aren't great here, I'd love to know how it went for you :)

@@ArtisOpus cheers dude! I have been so busy with work last week so have nearly just finished one of my primaris, tbf I am VERY happy how it has cams out absolutely LOVE the series d man! I have gone completely out there and created my own chapter in the process, starting out from a metal and working through to a pure white highlight....I have dubbed them The Lords Of Mortifer! I am basing it now and finishing off the scroll work and grenade belt then I shall send it over to your page man 👍😃. It is literally my first marine I have painted in 20 odd years haha.

Also are y’all not shipping to the US I’ve tried twice to order a XS and small dry brush and each time it says US isn’t a valid country.
