Note: You can also perform the power meter calibration with no load on the speaker terminals. All you have to do is connect the voltmeter to the speaker terminals and directly read the RMS voltage. The same math applies as was shown in the video.

I am almost at the end and 'am listening to and watching the comment you are showing and discussing. I think the best you can do is to ignore these people. If you can block them, you should block them. You are doing a service of educating people with a free service. The thing that is annoying is the poor writing skills of people who want to complain about everything and anything. Please ignore them and continue with your good ... make it great contributions! Sorry I had to chime in though you encourage us not to do so. There, I said it.

@xraytonyb this is NOT a stupid video about fixing something from the 70s, it is another one of your great videos where you deliver both theory and practice in an easy and fun way. I have above-average knowledge about this type of electronics and I still LEARN tons from you. Pity the ones who get angry instead of taking advantage of the free education. Keep up the great work 👍.

I was watching Scott Adams the other day, and he mentioned how RU-vid commentators were just the worst. You can watch him block users as he goes along. I think that's the best path. If someone is getting emotional, it's no longer useful to keep them around.

Questions, and constructive criticism, can be great learning tools for everyone, but when someone feels the need for insults or non constructive negative comments, they should pursue other channels or think about the need to really post what they do, or risk getting comments removed and access blocked. Sometimes, stuff is said in fun, and the channel creator may choose to remove and block that person, it's a chance you take when posting I guess, I hope to never be that tight in managing content and comments, as we all need a good laugh or smile now and then.

Tony, there are people that whatever you may try to convey, will never be satisfied, because it just not fit their way of understanding. So try not to get into justifying, leads to nothing. One gripe I've ALWAYS had with transistor spec sheets is that there is NO universal reporting and/or specification standards. Every Mfgr just gives you the specs they want you to see.
@poormanselectronicsbench2021
@poormanselectronicsbench2021 10 месяцев назад
It's also more evident when you are looking at datasheet info from discontinued transistors from 30+ years ago, compared to modern datasheets. It can be very "hit and miss" to try to work out a suitable replacement. In that case, finding and downloading a old guide like the "Sams Transistor Specification Manual", or "RCA Transistor Handbook" from the 70's or 80's ( Sams lists all brands, RCA is more just their products) can be a good aid, as it has a wide range of parameters to reference for each device.

I just heard your response to the viewer who did not understand your video. The only thing that I had a problem with was trying to understand what the viewer was trying to say. He obviously put a lot of energy in his comment and I feel bad that I didn’t understand what he was trying to say. I feel bad because the first step in communicating is to understand the initial comment and I failed at that. Personally I think you go out of your way to try to explain what you are doing sometimes I want to say ok ok ok let’s move on but I understand there are viewers who need more explanation. You do good work and I like it!!!!

Thanks Tony, for following up with another video. It is very, very helpful! In my opinion, there is only one disappointing aesthetic about this model receiver, and that is the fact you can barely see the meter pointers because the backlighting washes them out. RS should have either made them wider, made them a contrasting color, or put lighting in front as well as the rear. Pioneer's 80 series receiver meters are a wonderful example of great, legible meters.

It is worth pointing out a transistor's current gain (Hybrid Forward common-Emitter, Hfe) becomes largely irrelevant in a circuit employing *negative feedback*. Mathematical circuit analysis strongly suggests this, whether this be effectively: Voltage-Series, Voltage-Shunt, Current-Series, or Current-Shunt feedback systems. And of course - this will apply to small and large signal stages. However, be mindful that not all circuits employ negative feedback, but in audio surely they have to be? - to keep nonlinearity down, hence - distortion down.

I very much enjoy watching your expertise. If I had only a third of what you know about these vintage stereos and all their inner workings I'd be happy. I learn something new every time I watch. As for the ones who complain, I totally agree with you that they should ask questions or don't watch it. There are way too many things that are wrong with this current world and it's not worth it to get upset about a hobby for me to get upset. Tony, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!

Keep on working and making videos in your style - I'm not an engineer and have just a little education about electronics in school (and the most of that was energetic electronics, power devices and circuits), but repairing amps are mine hobby and I learned a lot by myself and a lot from the internet. You are talking very understandable to the most of us - HiFi repair enthusiasts.

Tony definitely needs to be thanked for his time and efforts in creating the videos he does. Even if someone does not choose to follow any lead he had given on his repair & restoration work, at the least people get a view and idea of what is inside of a unit, and gives them the possibility of making their own choices on what and how they want to proceed, or, to avoid purchasing something that may be too big a hassle to deal with.

Tony I can't remember on the 2080, but on the STA-2100 the Bass Mid and Treble are set to max when calibrating the watt meters. I worked at the QC Lab for Realistic in Fort Worth from 1976-1982 and used to do the rigorous quality control and comparison (with other brands Sansui Pioneer Marantz etc) on these units. We put up a STA-2100 at full power along with competitors equalness for 7 days 24 hours a day and all failed except for the STA-2100. (Toroidal model) The STA-2100D IIRC went around 5 1/2 days where all competitors units failed somewhere in the 4th day or before. People even today don't realize just how well these were designed and engineered. Thanks for posting these vids they are top notch to anything else on the subject.

10 watts is 10 watts whether tone controls are maxed or not. i don't understand how maxing out the controls is going to matter to the drive circuit for the meters. it's only measuring voltage.

I think with the tone controls maxed, would make more of a pointed sine? Not sure what signal was running but it could have been putting the most demand on the amps in a listening environment? I think, still cypher’ing the process mentioned.@@josephlalock8378

I noticed the same comment on the earlier video, and the viewer’s frustration was very evident. He expressed his frustration as anger at you. In the comment relating to this video he is expressing the same frustration as an attitude that ‘other people’ have ‘better stuff’ than he has. Now he is feeling inferior. Hopefully, over time, he will learn enough that his confidence grows, and he feels better about himself. THEN he won’t post such awful posts, and might become a great teacher. The thing about human beings is they (or ‘we’) have such great potential for good as well as evil. He will learn more efficiently when he doesn’t beat himself (and others) up so much. Edit: Perhaps it would help him if you asked him what ONE THING he didn’t understand. That is, ask him to analyze his own response and identify ONE THING he needs to learn. As you say you did with the question about hfe. Just a thought 💭 . I feel the need to help him objectify his ignorance (and modify his behavior). I admire your restraint in not responding in kind to his emotional outbursts, not everyone has your constitution or patience. And, as you say, you’re not presenting a course in basic (or advanced) electronics, you’re sharing a hobby.

I watch your and other videos to learn what I do not know I do not know about. sure it seems complicated especially knew stuff for a while but the practical demystification you demonstrate is very encouraging. I do have a question or a request .could you demonstrate how to trouble shoot and reverse engineer circuit that you do not have any documentation on ie schematics or service docs. the tricks you do not know you do are always insightful and often different from others. there is so much stuff out there that is used and could work without any available docs. of any kind. some people just want simple directions on how to fix something me too but it is not always available so I have to try a figure it out which is very rewarding when it works!! don't give up yet!

I have not looked at the previous video yet, and I will. Those Sanken “bat winged,” transistors are awesome. The really are power hungry. They used them in the d240 and 400 from ARC, which was the most analog sounding amplifier I’ve ever heard, “so close” to tube sounding. Nice work. Keep those old good ones.

Sadly, you can't make a video that is going to match every viewer's expectations... Every person has a different take on what they expect to see... It's called being an individual.... If you don't see what you are after regarding information then find another video that does.... Don't rubbish the technician. Tony..... I have watched and enjoyed many many of your videos. I am not bothered by what you are repairing but rather the approach and techniques used.... For me... This is the reason I watch.... I work with analogue equipment as a hobby build valve amps so seeing the digital equivalent is broadening my horizon. Don't let the negative thoughts of viewers distract you from your good work..... If someone needs gear starting out. If they live in Canada or the USA i will ship them enough to get going as far as learning. I do this with no strings attached and supply other items along with a multimeter and soldering station to get someone started. Im retired and young and buy extra gear for people who are serious about getting into electronics as a hobby. If you read this tony and want to pin it, i have enough stuff to set 2 to 3 people up with a beginners kit i wish i had. It wont be a fluke meter but itll be something i paid close to 100 for and i have a t12 station or 2 and tons of ics and microcontrollers and leds (as i have over 100k haha) along with breadboards and perfboard along with a simple psu thats adjustable up to 24v. My email isnt hard to find and just put the title as need gear or something and ill get back to the person immediately. I buy extra stuff to give away to anyone who cant afford to get started and theres no judgements or strings attached except for my enthusiasm to find out how i can help. Im not lying and i believe in helping anyone i can. Ill even send a small amplifier and speakers.

Love your videos and all the info I’m learning from you, I’m no stranger to this stuff, I’ve been messing with this stuff sense I could walk, but now I’m learning the right way to go about it, I’m retired from the automotive field, electrical was my specialty, I have a question for you on the sta 2080, I picked one up for 20 bucks at a goodwill last year, it plays great, the only problem it has is, it’s lacking a little base in the left channel, and the left vu meter pegs out really easy, dc off set seams on target, a starting point? Should I do recap and test things along the way first? Or just start looking for the trouble section first? What say you? I have many vintage stereos I’ve repaired that were already broken and turned out nice, haven’t worked on anything with performance issues except my pioneer sx 880 and a recap took perfect care of that, thank you for being there for us, please keep them videos coming, I love learning new stuff always 👍🏼😎

You kept N pounds of good vintage equipment from being E waste. It lives again. To the rest of us mortals it ears sounds fine. You educated a few people and entertained a few people. Given that the market is no longer producing 40-60 year old semiconductors your choices are limited. It isn't like you have a Narnia parts cabinet that hoovers parts from the past to the present in your shop. You did more than the poo thrower. Invite them to view elsewhere.

I run a small blog with mostly electronics, I only get nice comments or polite questions. I guess angry people don't like reading and would rather watch RU-vid? I've seen some videos where the person doing them just had some things wrong, but had the right intention. If there are no other comments pointing to that error, I will try to politely tell them what's wrong, since it will affect other people as well. If the whole video is wrong then there isn't even a point in writing a comment.

I have the exact same unit STA-2080 i bought in the early 80's. My unit works perfectly as long as i put a match box under 1 of the corners. If the unit sits flat on the table i loose one of the channels. Obviously i have a bad connection on one of the boards. Can you give me an idea where im loosing the connection. Thanks Mark

It also could be possible that the amp has a faulty transistor that is failing when it overheats. Propping up the receiver may be letting a bit more air to flow in from the bottom. If you turn it off, wait a few minutes and turn back on, does the sound return in that channel?

@xraytonyb hey Tony . Great work. I put a post up offering gear to anyone who can't afford / doesn't know where to start with electronics. It's something I offer whenever I can. It's a starter kit with a dmm, soldering station and consumables along with a bunch of stuff to keep a new person busy for a while. I'm a former 911 operator with ptsd and an engineering degree I never used along with some serious chops on guitar and bass. I've been playing 30 years. Prog rock and metal haha. Anyway, great work and just wanted to let you know about the offer I put up.

Tandy Electronics made it. Sansui made no Realistic audio.

Hi Tony I also wanted to add that the meters on these units are not to be called a novelty by their design, The reasoning you notice almost all high power units the scale will get tighter as the wattage increases is pretty much accurate because in theory the more total distortion the less they will "bounce" and become "fixed" as they loose that headroom in the sound that give audio its "live" presence. If you notice the printed scale on the meter will begin to tighten as it reaches it's rated power AE the less bounce the more distortion visually. This is by design not a novelty. Again your work is top notch even I don't know everything but we continue to learn.
