Reality of Self Defense Shooting

In this Geauga Firearms Academy video we look at the reality of a self defense situation. Although marksmanship is critical, there is a very different skill set and training practices that must be understood and effectively learned if one is able to successfully survive a real self defense situation. I demonstrate the basic concepts needed to retain your weapon and create space.
These are demonstrations of concepts and best practices, and in no way replace actual hands on training with a competent instructor. As always seek professional training.

Just a few weeks ago, I ran across your videos and started watching I now see one or more a day. My shooting was never something I brag about. After absorbing your techniques, my shooting is improving. Focusing on front sight, grip, trigger control and breathing are coming together for me. Yes, I definitely need much more practice for certain. Thanks to both of for your efforts for they do make a difference to many who you will never meet.

From a rookie perspective, (110 rounds through a Glock 17M I just purchased a month ago and a three hour basic handgun safety and handling class), 1.) great demonstration, learned a lot in three minutes. 2.) Although not even mentioned in this video, but demonstrated very clearly is the fact that if you aren’t carrying one in the chamber, you would be screwed in this scenario. Seems you would have no choice but to retreat and hope you could create enough space to have time to rack the slide. This is by far the most compelling video I have seen advocating for carrying a round in the chamber.

Good vid. One thing though, something to consider. Most people (attackers and gunners) are right handed. When you lift your left arm above your head like that, you are exposing your heart and lungs to a direct knife wound by a right handed attacker, thru the ribs, arm pit, etc. Keeping your arm down but available and out of the line of fire as you show in a different video will at least offer a block. Your arm might take the wound but that's better than your heart or lungs. On everything else, you are 100 percent IMHO.

Very good video. One thing I'd like to add is ensure your defensive arm is NOT extended when shooting. If you extend your defensive hand out to deflect or push away your opponent, and draw your weapon close to your body and fire without extension aiming, you risk shooting your own limb! Otherwise, great video as always. Please keep up the good work!

This is essentially one of the techniques I will be using if ever in such a scenario. The one thing that should be mentioned is that under duress, one can easily shoot his or her own extended arm if not careful. Good video though.

Thank you. I agree with your view as to what is most likely in distance/time/space pressure. Agree the non-gun arm needs to be practiced in the position you describe and demonstrated, for a number of reasons. Many actions to happen all at once.

Subbed. Concealed carry classes should focus on this, but they don't even touch it. Everybody repeats the same old "sight picture and trigger squeeze" from competitive sport shooting. Most of the situations you describe in this video will be in low light, so sights won't work anyway. Great video. Thanks.

Awesome video. Lots of stuff people don't consider in there about the reality of defensive handgun use. Another technique to consider is lowering the support hand guard to a boxing type position. That'll reduces the exposure of the brachial artery and lungs and can help prevent shooting the support arm if someone gets excited and blades off their body too much. It will also still protect the neck and sweet spot on the jaw. Obviously no wrong or right way here but just another technique for the tool bag. I like your point about protecting the back of the head though. Oh and I dig the shirt!

Agree. Firing uses fine motor skills which degrade in lethal event. Would think most effective moves would be gross motor moves, which may be all have in close up lethal event.

I agree. If you normally wear a garment covering your firearm, then it makes sense to train to move that garment while running through drills like this. Train how you fight, because you WILL fight, how you've trained. Still, good video man. Great info that many people need to consider and be prepared for.

Good technique. Gliding the leg back lowers the center of gravity and gives you a balanced platform as opposed to the speed rock technique they used to teach police officers that leaves you off balance.

Good advice man. I wish more people thought this way. The threat is seldom out at 7 to 10 yards. That could be the case in your home in the middle of the night, so my advice is to train both near and far.

Question/observation. Why wouldn't you in a close fire situation with an attacker not draw you elbow up and keep firearm close while protecting with support hand shooting two rounds into the pelvic gertle and continue to move back as you bring sidearm to chest than posted out. Staying close to the attacker with the gun presented like this would give them opportunity to take or grab. Your target will not slow down with one shot unless a brain shot. The shots to the pelvic area will slow the attacker as your fire and dynamically move away from target.,

At my age and with my poor health I will never be taking a class from a firearms instructor so your training is very much appreciated! "I get more from your instruction on RU-vid than any of the others I have watched." I like the series on Kim learning to shoot. Please keep the demonstrations for close quarter self-defense with a handgun coming our way! I am interested in Home Defense tactics. What personal defense loads do you and Kim carry in your respective Springfield pistols? Is the 9mm 115 grain jacked hollow point round to light for self-defense? Thanks for providing these helpful videos in these troublesome times.

Phaetana Phofa hopefully you're using large hollow points or hornady rounds to reduce penetration. Then, you could take a knee to have the back drop above bystanders. Yes, skylining shots is still dangerous. However, you have a much lower risk of hitting someone far away. Hope this helps, hopefully you've already found videos on this scenario.
