Gaslighting is an insidious and evil tactic. I dealt with a narcissistic gaslighter in a relationship. The confusion that they bring can cause physical/mental symptoms as well, in particular, memory loss as their whole intent is to make you doubt reality. I've always had a strong memory, but dealing with persistent gaslighting almost wrecked it. The more I stay away from this person, the clearer things become...that's all I need to know to continue to stay away

Gaslighting has changed me for the better. Before I got with my ex I tolerated alot. Because I was raised with this idea that you don't quit on people you care about. The whole year we were together, we argued. Most of the arguments were about what I needed to do better even though most the arguments she started for thinking I was cheating when I really wasn't. When ever I prove it then she'd argue about something else I need to do better. One day I've experienced my very first panic attack in the middle of an argument. I didn't know what it was at the time. All I knew was that I couldn't find the breath to say the words I needed to say. Some time later she tried to pick argument over the phone while I was at work. So I left to my brothers house as soon as I got off work. Out of no where she pulled up at his place. When I told her she needed to leave she refused. The only thing that got her to leave was me telling her that she's being recorded from the second she arrived (Which she was). Afterwards I felt my breathing getting worse after the argument. So I decided to check into the hospital. As I was lying in the hospital bed trying to clear my throat and lungs, meanwhile in my text chat she was making all kinds of threats if I didn't come home. Realizing that I was alone in that patients room while watching the family and friends of other patients surrounding them I cried. What changed me was when the doctor came back told me that everything my body was experiencing was a result of high levels of stress. The belief I had on not giving up on others had died that day. I ended the relationship with her soon after checking out of the hospital and my tolerance for disrespect went straight to zero. I know the story was long, but to any man or woman reading this: I pray and hope you learn from my story not to tolerate disrespect in any form and please set your boundaries in the beginning. If you don't anything you let them get away within the beginning they will fight and resist and rule you try to set later...

Women aim to have men doubt their perception of reality and this is learned behaviour which is done to justify and rationalise the behaviour of the woman, crucially bringing about an abdication of responsibility , for that behaviour.

During a discussion I would press the fact that there are always exceptions or gray areas to her absolutist dogma that she was correct. She has turned that around on me and thus the statement above. Olivia, Thank you for this timely post. Gaslighting in my second marriage was one of the main reasons I filed for divorce. From the number of arguments we had, it became clear to me that she was trying to make me doubt my own educational background, work experience and sense of reality. I figured that there was a term for this. So I googled term for making someone doubt their reality and bam I discovered the word gaslighting. Further research led to the source of the term and its association with narcissism. I found it to be pretty common and that there is no salvation in staying with someone male or female, that uses it. Run, I say, run, not walk away. Folks may say that it was not done intentionally but I detect a bunch of lies in that statement.

Just went through this to the extreme. I was hurt by losing her but when I realised how much of a narcissist she is I'm actually glad I'm not with her. Although, it does hurt cuz we have children but I think it may be for the best. But I do believe at some point all of us have done some of these things unintentionally and unnoticeably. But the one is the narc is the one who is consistently showing these signs.

Denial. My wife says the most hurtful shit ("I wish I'd have known all this about you before we got married, I'd have never married you." And, "I never said that. You're crazy and the VA even says so. I should talk to them about you." And, "I'm not a gaslighter. I've never heard that word. But, you constantly make up things I never said or did, and it's all in your mind." When she ABSOLUTELY did and said those things. She says the meanest shit and throws insults at me and within seconds absolutely denies ever saying those things. Even. Turning it around to say "I'll bet you tell your family everything evil about me to get them to hate me." I ask, "why would I do that?" She'd say more things like "Well, because you always have something negative to say about me." Which in her family, and in my family, I say nothing. I sometimes say, "I'm not you. I've got nothing to hide. I'm not a Pretender." Which always opens up another huge can of worms because now she thinks I've insulted her character, which she has none. This is just the beginning. She purposely ALWAYS AND CONSTANTLY tries to make me look bad to her family by misrepresenting me or my actions, or outright Iying. She loves to create fights between me and her family. Right after we got married she nade up that I was mistreating her. Got everyone SO PISSED at me (for something she made up) that they took turns screaming at me. Turns out her whole family is a gaggle of gaslighting narcissists. It was so bad that I left her for several months, on that day, 5 weeks after the wedding. I went to a city 400 miles away. One day she showed up at my door to "work it out." *SHE SAID THAT IT WAS ONLY HER AND HER DAD, AND THAT HE WAS STAYING A FEW MILES AWAY AT HIS SISTER'S HOUSE WHILE WE TALKED RHINGS OUT.* Remember that, it's important. She stayed with me for a few days and all of a sudden she got a phone call from her younger sister, who was hysterical. Calling to say their mother had just fallen over dead. My wife got hysterical, too, and said "I've got to get over there. Let's GO!" Panicking. I explained to her that there was nothing that we could do from 400 miles away except stay in contact. She said, "No, they're here in town. Only a few blocks from here." I said, "You said that only your dad and you came." Here it comes... She lied and said, *"NO I NEVER SAID THAT! I TOLD YOU THAT MY MOM ANF SISTER AND DAD CAME WITH ME!"* And it's been like that, always. Constantly lying x even telling her family things I was supposed to have said but I did not. Ever since I called her a gaslighter she watched a few videos on it and now she calls me a gaslighter all the time, not even knowing what it means. She sure is a pain in my ass. That instance of her mom dying of a sudden heart attack at age 49 but her lying all about her even being there... that was at the very beginning. 2011. Now it's 2023. You can guess correctly that I became emotionally detached from her. Even stopped having sex with her. And she just simply cannot understand why. She can look at an improperly dressed woman on the street and falsely accustomed of looking at her. I'll say "never saw her until younpojnted her out." But my words don't even break through the false narratives she builds and tells her family about me. It's a volatile situation because I've tried to talk to her dad about it, but he instantly and always sides with his daughter. Her sad is physically ill now and I'm putting about $2,000 per month into his health care. And all my time. I honestly feel I'm just king used.

Personally at the end of the day. There's nothing wrong with taking responsibility for your own part to play in a break up. But if she wants to act as though it was just you, when you and her both know otherwise, then that will be on her conscience,not yours.

Yupp I learned this lesson the hardway. My ex wife was a huge gas lighter always constantly blaming me for everything despite me paying all the bills and taking care of us because i got her pregnant. After she gave birth She always accused me of cheating, controlling her, and that I'm the issue in the relationship. Just for me to find out that she was cheating on me before and after she gave birth and then i started realizing everything she accused me of she was doing herself. If you pay attention gas lighters will tell on themselves but replace you as the subject instead of them. Shes been long gone and i learned alot from being with her and now know what to look for in the next woman.

I wrote a long apology after we broke up. It was important for my stepdaughter to see my accountability, I meant what I said too. The letter was mainly about my coercive behaviour, I remember constantly being in fear of gaslighting my girlfriend too. I do think I was as toxic, I was mean too. I was brought up very, er, critically tbh. 2 years later and I slowly realise I apologised for her behaviour. I got nothing lol 🤷

Its so important that this kind of abuse is talked about. I know that is is probably much more common for men to abuse women in this way, but I would very much encourage people to acknowledge that the roles can be reversed and that women are just as capable of being the gaslighter/abuser. Also, unfortunately, in my experience it is not just romantic scenarios where women do this. I personally have been the target at work and lost jobs more than once because of women gaslighting me. When the person doing it is so good at it, they can manipulate the people in management and other employees. They fly under they radar, and can be extremely horrible, vindictive, manipulative, coercive, etc. They will gaslight you, and mess with your head all day long until you literally start to question reality. Usually the victim is not believed until the gaslighter does it to someone else, or gets caught by the manager in the act. It was so traumatic for me that I can't sit through a job interview without breaking down when I am asked "what was the reason your employment ended at this job?" because I want to be honest, but its so hard to explain these situations without looking like you're actually the problem, over sharing, or sounding like you're dodging the question. Thankfully, I was lucky enough to find a work from home job, so every interaction with all co-workers are documented in some fashion or another. And still, during a zoom meeting a female co-worker, who I had never even interacted with prior, tried doing it to me simply because I was contributing to the conversation, but thankfully my manager was also in that meeting and witnessed the whole thing. Even though I had done nothing wrong, my initial thought was, "here we go again, someone targeting me, but eventually I'll get fired for no reason". Thankfully, they checked in with me the following morning to make sure I was ok, and that women was spoken to about her inappropriate conduct. She eventually apologized to me. She also no longer works there, but may be unrelated to the incident.

had a conversation with my wife, in an instance the conversation turned into an argument, where we both said things. She got up pack her stuff and left. While away she started telling everyone who she knows will take her side half of the story making me looks like a bad person, saying is because of the things I said, where she never tells what she did wrong.
