Just finished 06 marquis. Easy job. Mine had plenty of oil but the bearing failed anyway and took the shaft with it. Glitter removal was easy with the proper break cleaner spray. Don't use acetone based carb cleaners. They don't cut good enough and are violent on your skin and eyes.
11:07 finally someone smart enough that realizes you can pull the seal by pulling the bearing with it, I've seen guys beat on the seals for 2 hours with a long screwdriver trying to pry them out when you can just pull the seal out with the bearing all in one...
Ive done that job a few times. I had to replace the right rear axle on my 02 F150 that has the 8.8. Luckily the pinion seal was okay on that one. On a 2005 lincoln town car signature I purchased last month, the forst thing I did was jack each rear axle tube up and checked for up and down play and in and out play and both sides checked out, but, it had a pinion seal leak. I ordered the pinion seal and flange off of Ebay, but before it arrived I noticed the pinion seal wasnt pushed in all the way and was leaking oil from between the metal outer part of the seal, so I put RV all around that metal part of the seal then used a large screw driver to push it in. Then filled the differential back up and noticed the leak stopped. The previous owner had the transmission rebuilt on that car and I assume they changed the pinion seal but never hammered it in maybe because they forgot. Heres what usually wears out these axles ends on these rear ends though, it because at the factory they only half fill these and the axle tubes run dry as a result. So for new car owners, the first time you have an oil change have that damn differential filled
I don’t keep track of what tools I use, usually whatever I need. What I used to clean out the axle tubes was a broomstick with a large flat washer screwed to the end, I scraped out the large pieces and metal putty then started swabbing it with that broomstick with a paper towel soaked in brake clean. It took a while before I was satisfied it was clean.
the bearing go bad because of the housing the bearing doesn't get enough lube oil only when u turn corner, if you put the new bearing in feel on the inside of the bearing the ridge of the bearing housing sit to high oil don't soak the bearing put a little more fluid in it that is what i found with these
How much noise was this making when driving? Looking at buying a car, 2003 marquis and I believe it has this issues. Can hear it pretty loud around 40+ on test drive. Is she safe to drive about 30 miles home?
@@bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387 I deff see remnants of fluid on the right rear inside the rim. But it’s not wet. Guy just drove it back from Texas to Dc I’m just concerned about how long it was driven in that condition. I bought some cheap lube from Walmart and figured I’d check and pour in before driving. But is it safe to drive like this?
@@MrWontstopthefunk there’s no way to know without hands on, but as long as I didn’t hear clicking/crunching sounds I’d fill it with fluid and try it. I’ve seen several that don’t look like they’re leaking much because they ran out of fluid a while ago.
Hey Bulldog. Correct me if I'm wrong here but don't you have to pull the pin all the way out and rotate the gear Assembly to get the spider gears to drop out then you have clearance to push the axle's toward each other then you reach in with a magnet and extract the C-Clips?
FYI if you would have removed the ABS sensors after the rotors, it would have cleared the extra space to push in the axle for the c clips to come out..they usually fall out once cleared and you wouldnt have had to bang at it
Man I just replaced the rear right bearing and seal on a 05 grand marquis 2 months ago came out this morning puddle of gear oil on the ground so now wondering what should I do?
Ran into the exact same problem on my grand marquis. Took it to the shop after I had no luck backing out the broken pin bolt. They had to drill it out. I hope i never have the problem again.
@@bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387 I'm getting ready to pop the diff cover off again because I'm having a pulsating kinda grinding noise at around 50mph. I suspect that it could be the bearings on the other axle. I'm not sure exactly what it is yet though.
@@bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387 I didn't think about that, thanks. I have never changed those but I will now. I know my pinion seal has a tiny leak in it, but I check my diff oil every week. I've checked for play in the pinion, axles and driveshaft. None of them have any play at all.
how did you get the axle unstuck? I'm having the same problem with mine not moving inward so i can access the C clips. It's barely moving 🥲 - an exhausted college girl with a towncar
@@celestepuff8030 I pried inward on it with a prybar, hooked it into the groove where the c-clip goes and kept working it until I got the clip moving out of the groove, then knocked it out the rest of the way with a punch
I’ve got an 02. 119k miles . Bought it last fall with 93k. I did change the diff fluid just because when I checked it I couldn’t feel any oil with my finger through the fill port. Oil that came out was relatively clean. Anyway …. Both my rear wheels have some axial thrust to them . Not up and down only axial movement. No leaks . None , not at the end of the axles , not a pinion seal, not a diff cover. I’m wondering if my bearings are going out …. Or if some axial thrust is normal . It doesn’t make any noise or have any driving issues … I just noticed the thrust.
So Lincoln never fixed this issue? How many miles were on these cars when it typically becomes noticeable? If you have a low mileage Town Car how can you prevent it from ever happening?
I have a 2011 towncar at 10mph it wiggle a little side to side but no noise and it stops when I speed up. I can feel it in my sit at 10 rpm only, the wheels spins ok and I can't rock it back a forth but I can pull it out and push it inabout 1/16th of a inch on the back passenger side what do you think?
In-out (lateral) movement is slack in the side gear/c-clip area…1/16 seems excessive but not much you can do about it, if you have the cover off for any reason you can see exactly what is loose but it’s generally nothing to worry about.
Bearing, axle shaft, both seals, and the pinion seal that leaked the grease out to begin with causing the bearing failure due to lack of lubricant. The bearings in the center still had grease but it was extremely low.
Hi i have a 2001 Lincoln TC:.... is the replacement for that gen of tc same as for the newer ones? ( i think in the videos it is a tc 2003 or newer) would anyone beso kind and would either list the steps up or could correct /comment my list? (sry im from germany my english might not be the best) My indirect question is: do i have to remove the central pin with a**ho** bolt which always breaks? as far as i understood i dont have to remove it is it right? to remove axle shaft 1) remove Wheel 2) Remove brake Disc 3) Remove diff Cover 4) Remove U Shaped Saftey clip with sits on the of axle shaft 5) remove axle shaft by pulller 6) replace bearing...
Yes that pin has to come out, they usually break with one thread still in and I’ve been able to spin them out with a pick tool…been very lucky. Only had one that wouldn’t come out.
@@bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387 I'm doing my where in and it seems like it's still popping out on the left side do you know something can be wrong minds completely broke off when I was driving and the rim and everything came off
@@chicanomexicanoamericano3652 if the axle’s still attached then it has to do with the c-clip in the diff, I’ve seen the end snap off axles or if nothing is visually broken it could be worn enough that it’s allowing the clip to fall out
They must have had a bad run of bearings from their supplier, or went with the lowest bidder. Seen a few of these in the shop and after posting this I’ve had a ton of comments.
@@alljerseysmatter. depends on what brand you use as a replacement, the manufacturer uses aftermarket suppliers for their OE parts, they can have a run of bad parts just like any other company.
I have a question if anyone can help I have a 1999 lincoln town car my rear differential is no good so can i replace it with a 2009 lincoln town car rear differential?
