Great video. Don't break that 8mm bolt inside diff. I just did same job on my suburban. I tried drilling it out. It ended with trading the truck in under frustration lmao.

Hi Danny, I want to change the IRS rear wheel hub bearings. Could you tell me what size tools I need to take the hub off? Then I will take the hub to my mechanic just to remove and replace the bearings. Cheers Aussie Steve

Hi Steve. You will need a 36mm socket for the half shaft nut, and two 18mm sockets for the bolts on the top and bottom of the knuckle. One big thing as well will be removing the rear tie rod at the knuckle. You want to pull out the pin, remove the nut that looks like a castle, and rent or buy a pitman arm puller to pull the tie rod out of the knuckle. Please don’t just turn the nut upside down and wack it. Some people do that and you could crack the aluminum. Hey Danny, thanks for all your quick helpful responses. The c-clips that I removed are identical on both sides. There is NOT a rounded side and smooth side. They lay flat against each other both ways. They do slide in and hold but I was concerned that they were the wrong ones from prior work. Are they okay to continue to use or do I need to get the ones like in your video?

I would call ford and if it’s a part they have on hand at least to compare the two. It’s possible they are needed to be different for what’s currently in the car if it’s not ford parts. Then again, the ford c clips worked with my moser axles so it’s hard to say. If they have been holding they are likely fine

@Danny Johnson’s Garage I went by Ford and they are the same c- clips. Thankfully, I did find out why they were loose when putting them on the new axles. The thin, tiny and almost invisible rubber ring did not come on the new axle. Which is why the c-clips were loose I thought. So I removed the old rubber rings off the old axles and put on the new axle and bingo. Good to go! Thanks brother

Hi Danny, I have a question, which is that if with the cobra (IRS) do I need to open the differential and remove the axles to change the axle bearing or can I just do it with removing the wheel bearing and the axle connection? Basically what I'm looking/trying to do is to change the bearing/seal of the axle that connects to the wheel bearing but I have not found any video for the Mustang SVT Cobra with independent rear suspension... I thank you for your attention

For the irs there is a wheel bearing in the hub and the one you are taking about is where the shaft goes into the differential. I do believe the diff may need to be removed in order to get those bearings out. Danny just wanted to confirm once you remove the long bolt and slide the pin out you can rotate the yoke at the drive shaft to get the c clip out without messing up the gears? Once the pin is out is there anything you shouldn’t rotate or move? Thanks!

The spider gears can work their way out if you rotate the diff with the pin out, so it’s best to keep it all in place. I remember rotating the gears once and seeing the spider gears in the diff start to come out and quickly turned it back the opposite direction and they lined back up

Getting ready to perform axles seals and bearings. When tapping the bearings in is there a stop so I will know when they seated and can stop tapping on them? Would a socket the size of the bearing outer ring be good for this? Or pretty much as long as you keep it straight going in and not hit the bearings or walls causing scarring? Btw, do you have a video of the universal joint removal and install?

Yes, the bearing will ultimately seat and stop so you’ll know. I used a bearing and seal driver kit. I think I have a gouge in my axle housing. Now my axle shaft won’t go all the way back in. What should I do? I’ve heard something about an axle sleeve, but I’m not sure on how that’s suppose to work. Please get back at me ASAP

Where to do you think it’s gouged? Try gently turning the axle backwards and forwards for the teeth to line up with the teeth in the differential

It’s gouged where the bearing and seal sits. Like when I try and put the axle back in it doesn’t go all the way in like something’s holding back from going in. I’ve made sure the axle is in the differential correctly, but it still will not go in.

Axle shafts typically come without the reluctor ring installed. I had them pressed on at a shop. People pound them on but they can come off if not properly pressed. I had to install new rings because I upgraded to 31 spline shafts and 31 spline differential.

Must I install the new studs onto the axles before I put on the reluctor rings? Someone said that it would not be possible to put them on after the the ring is installed? Something about not enough room to put them in because of the ring in the way. The studs are the regular and not extended length studs. Actually, the studs came with the axle kit from American Muscle. I called them and they told me they were the oem length. However, what is the factory stud length before I install them and find I they are not the correct length. Some guys have run onto that problem and I want to double check.

You have to open the diff to remove the c clip or the axle will not come out. It needs to be removed to side a new bearing over the axle shaft.

The new bearing should bottom out on a lip inside the axle housing. Once you hear that, and then seal fits in you should be fine.

I opened up the diff and found a dark residue coating the entire inside. It didn't look shiny like metal flakes, do you think it's something i should be worried about? The car has also been sitting for a few months, but the last time it got it's diff fluid changed was last August (by a dealership)

Will driving on bad bearings for an extended period cause the traclock to stop working?

If the differential still has gear oil the track lok will not be effected, but you’ll likely ruin the axles where they ride on the bearings

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage ah, the reason I ask is because it’s making a wheel bearing like noise and when I did a burnout recently it only spun one tire, one shop says both rear bearings are shot since but another shop said it was just slightly warped rear brakes. Not sure who to believe but the diff and trans were serviced by the previous owner.

Yes, 79-14 is all the same differential and still a solid rear, so it should be the same process in general

You will need to buy the reluctor wheel and have it pressed onto the axle shaft. You are talking about the abs reluctor wheel that is on the axle shaft itself?

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Hey man, thanks for your help, I open my differential and nothing is damage inside, is mainly the wheel bearing that just went bad and mess my caliper bracket, but I notice the differential already has some "play" on it. I meant is some "play" between the ring gear and the pinion. My car is a 2000 so is 20 years old and almost 200K miles on it. Is it normal to have some kind of play?

So I look in the junk yards to actually swap the entire rear axle (I don't really have the time to rebuild the differential) but I see what is more affordable to me is a 7.5 differential instead of the 8.8 that I originally have on mine (is a GT) would it be much of a difference if I do that swap? I really appreciate your help. And thanks before hand.

Santiago Pena yes, the ring gear should be able to rock back and forth slightly (known as backlash). In my gear install video you’ll see how much it should. I’ll post the link below

spencerleeb No, it’s quite different since the irs has the bearings on the differential and then uses a wheel bearing that’s pressed into the knuckle that the half shaft slides into near the wheel. If you remove the caliper from the caliper bracket you don't have to remove the pain in the backside parking brake cable.

for pads only that’s fine, but the bracket needs to come off for the rotor anyway

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Yeah but if you pull the caliper first you'll have enough clearance to remove the lower bracket bolt and not have to deal with that pesky parking brake cable.

Salty man Reviews The parking brake cable is super easy to simply unlatch (make sure the brake is off of course). It’s much easier to unwrap it and get the caliper out of the way

Yes. 28 spline differential (t-lok) and 28 spline axels to match. All mustangs for 94-04 are 28 spline except the 2000 Cobra R, 2001 Cobra, and 03-04 Cobras
