Very well done. Incredibly helpful. I swear 3rd Gen owners are the most helpful and detail oriented peeps in the automotive world (of course I'm biased).
@@mrjebadia2582 Loved that about my 88 'runner; a tailgate with rear window that roll-downed down, like Old's station wagon. In 2002, traded that toward my 3rd gen; still running strong at 188k miles. 3rd Gens kick ass -- simple repairs and super-freaking reliable. Best suggestion I can offer: REPLACE Oxygen sensors regularly. Recently mine was due for second change. After replacing, the sucker runs brand new!
Have been wanting one since I was in high school. Just bought one from a close friend. Records dating back 17 years, seats reupholstered, everything else all original. Most amazing thing I’ve ever seen, feels like I’m 5 years old again
AWESOME IDEA...I just purchased a 99 4Runner for this exact purpose with my son...if it wouldn't be to much to ask for the dimensions of this set up please 🙏 🙂
Awesome build out ! Mine is a 2008/ 4 generation , do you by chance know if there would be a difference is measurements ? I’d love to follow yours to a T. Such helpful video thank you!
i don't know the differences. I suggest you just use the same concepts and measure out the box and go from there! I'm posting a new cargo build soon with all the steps I took to building it. It'll be a long video but will help you guys get an idea for tools and process lol. I'm not a wood worker but I know how valuable the walkthroughs are :)
Man, good job. That's about what I want to do with my gen2. I hit a deer though so everything's been put on hold...for the last 2 years. Eventually though I'd like to start with this and then a platform on my roof. I have a tailgate which makes accessing the roof easier. I know I have very little power to play with, but I'm not sure how little. I had just gotten the truck and JUST gotten my overdrive to work when the deer killed my Toyota. I've owned it for 3 years but I've only driven it about 100 miles. What are you gonna do though? ...Kill more deer!
I just bought a 99 4runner two wheel drive. I got lucky finding this cream puff of 113,000 miles!!! 😁 Looking into making one of these that can come out and in easily. I think I like this style the best
Definitely building something similar for my new to me FJ Cruiser! Dimensions should be very similar. Looking to stealth camp on the road trip from Iowa to Florida and back.
I’m starting this build this weekend... What are the metal 90° locking hinges you used for the little feet on the platform extensions? I can’t find them anywhere.
It's true not all heros wear capes. Great mod followed to a T. Did longer slides and it's perfect! Appreciate all measurements and all the time with suggested products. Thanks alot!
no problem man! I got a new video of my new cargo coming soon!!!!!! don't forget to subscribe to check it out! Or check me out on instagram @phorunner559
Great info! Thanks so much for doing this. I have a couple of ideas from a few videos I've seen. I've been collecting info and I'm about ready to hit my dad up for a father/daughter project soon lol!
I've also got the Klimit inflatable and the Klimit air pillow. For the pillow I tied some string on the valve end and the sewn on label at the other end (which is a loop). This sting wraps around my air mattress to hold the pillow in place. Works great. The drawers are nice. What years of experience has taught me is, always get full extension, or just use waxed wooden slides (usually maple or birch wood, sanded then waxed). Less than full extension is always, always a hassle. Also with any long bed drawer I'd have an adjustable support stick for when it's extended. I've yet to see anything cantilevered that doesn't eventually start to sag. Using cardboard for the pattern is a good idea. Don't forget the cardboard is not the goal, it's just a guide. In some cases you can tape pieces of cardboard on top until whatever mess you end up with fits like you want. This is a modern variation on the tick stick, or tic stick. Amazon seems determined to keep us perpetually supplied with cardboard. Hatches AND drawers are a good idea. And it's probably a good idea to not carpet or glue anything until you've taken it out at least once. I find with projects like this, I think about it, plan it to death, then as soon as I put the last screw in--even before I use it-- I know exactly how I should've done it.... And when I re-do it, I can see how much better the third version will be.... So I appreciate your sharing your clever set-up. Being smarter than me, your video is steps one and two. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful. I actually made another version of this. Check out my channel for the other video. I also filmed the build and made a how to series.
Great vid! You gave me some good Idea's for my Gen 3, I camp alot in it. One thing I have discovered when going into the wilds is by removing the rear seat bottoms ( four 12mm bolts literally 5mins) you gain about 8 inches of platform space and more floor space when you get home it's 5 minutes to put em back . But thanks again for the info.
Hey Man, just thought I would leave you another comment on this video after seeing the amount of work this project took, not just making the shelf but putting the video together, then attaching all the links to the items one would need. Man this is a lot of work. Hats off to you man. I live in Guyana, which is in South America and I'm getting ready to set up the same shelf you have in my runner. So ordering now on amazon. :)
Cool!! This video wasn’t too bad to do since it was mainly showing hehe. The build videos are much more time consuming. Thanks for watching and using my links! It supports the channel!
Watching this 1+ years later and boy was the audio quality crappy lol. I still can't believe there's over 70,000 views on this! Glad you guys found it helpful! Don't forget to check out my new version (with better audio) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CXZZnJvWj1c.html
just finished building the platform, drawers, and carpeting it tonight. plan on building the bed extensions and drawer faces tomorrow then the side wings at some point. bottom of the line thank you for the template. was very helpful to get wood and carpet
dude. this build is so smooth and beautiful. just bought a buddies 2000 and most likely going to do this exact build, my fav one so far. love the versatility of the drawer covers that turn into bottoms for sleeping! thanks for posting and for all the measurements.
Very cool system. Will be using your video to DMO (Do My Own). Thanks for sharing. BTW... The pieces of wood you utilized to hold up the folding doors in the back corners and also the sleeping platform extenders can be generally referred to as "furring strips." In a past life I was a carpenter. Thanks again man. Great stuff!
Nice thanks for sharing! a lot of hard work and time goes into building that stuff! but sure is fun!! getting ready for the Outback the adventure!! I miss it! when I had my wife and kids we traveled the USA from Mexico to the Lake Superior! and we stayed in the wild as much as possible! wild places,, nother words ,no official campsites!! course things are getting Tighter and Tighter! that was about 30 years ago!find the frontier! Leave it better than when you found it,!!
The first time I slept in my Tahoe was back in 2010 and I swear I miss having an SUV just for traveling and outdoor purposes. Thanks for this, I'm gonna have to use this.
I like this idea. I'm going to use my weather tec mat as a template for the top piece of plywood. I like your extenders the only difference I would do is move your 2 pieces outward and build a 3rd middle piece in order to have more room at head side.
Best set up I've seen yet! The only one thing I'd add would be to match the carpet color. Beige like the rest of the truck. Simple Rusteloum beige spray paint from Walmart would do great, as long as you don't overspray too much. I made my bmw worn out beige floor mats look like new. Again, amazing set up man!!
Thank you...I just acquired a 96 SR5 manual transmission/transfer case.. this is exactly what I needed to see...I don't plant a roof top tent. Subbed... Will see if you have more t4r mods
Wow, this is absolutely brilliant! You did such an incredible job!!! I’m so glad I found your channel. I’m going to attempt to build this for my GMC Yukon. Thank you so much for your great video!
this is a nice build. I watched your video and built out mine. However, I removed the single bolt attatching each rear seat cushion for extra length and use rubbermaid tubs for storage/ support up front. I also added a 3rd board which enables me to have a full 7 foot bed.
sweet! I have 3 little ones to take with me on adventures but glad you made it work. I'm sure there are some taller folks out there that can appreciate this!
Love it. Great design. One thing I could suggest is, to solve both issues with the extensions (slipping off and being 1/4" too high), you could remove the cleat and mill a 1/4" slot in it, then mill a corresponding slot in the inside end of the extensions, such that they drop into place and interlock (and would still be able to slide side-to-side as you mentioned you like to do sometimes).
yup i had thought about that. I mgiht do that to my new build! I have given this one away and made another but this tip is still useful! thanks for the tip. I found that pushing the front seat back works just fine!
I just got a 2002 Limited as my first car with 170k miles. I love it! Your build is one of the most subtle but most useful builds I’ve seen! I love it! Might have to try something similar I’m only 16 so i can’t camp or off-road as much as I like to but I want a cool build like this. Thanks so much!
I don’t but I just ran a wire straight back there from the battery. Use the access hole under driver foot well, pass along back of radio via carpet, then along the door trim. Just the power wire. Ground can use something metal in back.
Great stuff, as always. These videos are timeless (note I'm just posting on this almost 3 years later). I really appreciate all of the pics/measurements and links you provide. I have a few 3/4" sections of plywood lying around and am hoping to get this started soon. I need to also grab some of those window shade socks to keep bugs out. I haven't seen a way yet to make those work on the rear hatch window, though (the T4R trademark - there must be a way to use those). Maybe I missed it (I haven't seen your updated video yet). Thanks!
Hello!! I haven’t found a good way for the rear class other than hanging mesh wi magnets. This design is my favorite. I’ve gone through a few iterations! I’ll be making an update video of my latest version soon!
I have been planning a build just like this one. So happy I came across your video with all the dimensions. I’m gonna follow it exactly the same. Thank you for putting in the effort of making this video, but also listing dimensions and supplies needed.
Nice video. Finally some one who doesn't just show some super expensive thing they just bought for "overlanding." This set up is very practical and realistic for us regular people.
Be sure to change the timing belt! People always neglect that. Needs done every 90k and change water pump, cram seal and tensioner, idler when you do it. The 3.4 V6 (5vzfe) is probably the most reliable v6 ever made. I have 300,000 on mine.
I was thinking about building a platform just yesterday laying in my 96 4Runner but was thinking about building a simple platform for underneath storage out of pressure-treated lumber! If I wanted to get it out of my car or sell my rig, I can keep my platform and it would not ROT when stored outside! but could be removed and used for Dual Purpose like a camping platform outside? put legs on it use it as a picnic table:-) or as a shallow raft if you built it to float :-) and yes I always think outside of the box or should I say the 4Runner :-) haha I've always been an inventor
Just got a ‘97 4Runner Limites 4WD with only 28,000 miles on it. I was originally going to just put a weathertech in the back. Now I might have to look into this kind of build.
Great video and instructional build series! Inspired me to build my own! I had done something similar in my old Jeep, but yours was thought out much better. Thanks to watching your videos I built something that stores all my gear, gives my dogs a flat platform to ride on (no easy task with two Saint Bernards and a Black Lab), and gives my wife and I another sleeping option when we go camping. Thank you for taking the time to do it all so thoroughly, I really appreciate the work you put into documenting your build and the openness of your design process!
No problem but I can’t take all the credit. I just took ideas from forums and made them reality. Nothing special. 1st time doing anything like this too. I made another cargo sleeper so check out my other video! But this one should suit you fine for your needs!
I have slept in my 99 runner but I have to remove the back seat bottoms because there's not enough room for my 6"3' frame. Not the comfiest bed I sleep in but it's better than a tent for sure, and more secure.
And stealth!! Cool man! I kinda like not having to carry a RTT on top. A ground tent isn't bad either but if you're solo, sleeping inside is way more convenient.
that plywood topper is 41 1/8" by 39". The runners (2x6's) are 39 1/8" long. It needs the extra 1/2" overhang for the drawer faces plus another 1 1/2" for the back 2x6 that's back there. So that's why its 2" longer than those runners.
I have the same problem. At first, I made it higher so the bed goes above the folded rear seats but it was too high; I couldn't sit on bed and was harder to get in. I then decided to lower it and just take out the part of the folded seat that prevent you from beeing tall when sleeping... It's just two bolts so it's not too bad.
Your build is great! Your sound is baaaaaaaad, a heads up, buy a wires mic sound quality & fidelity is excellent ,no highs & lows, no echos or extraneous noise, moving around does not effect the sound , then we can hear you ! Shalom!
