Yes, the symphony of cross-cooperation of the engineering teams is remarkable. Elon says every engineer should consider him/herself to be the chief engineer of the company - always consider the big picture, and you always have a legitimate input to every part of the design. He also said years ago that if an engineer on one subsystem has a design conflict with another subsystem that engineer can walk directly to the desk of the other engineer concerned and work it out - no need to go up a management chain, over, and down another management chain. Sandy has described how the latter results in territorial thinking among the higher management, the politics he mentions in this video.

This sort of thing is actually fairly common in silicon valley. I've worked at a number of companies where there is a lot of interaction between groups and a fair bit of crossover. I do it myself frequently. Just last night I just identified and fixed a problem maintained by an entirely different group. As an engineer, when I find a problem, regardless if it is in an area of my responsibility or not, I want to fix it, and the culture of my employer is such that this is welcomed and encouraged. I don't get ruffled feathers if someone finds an issue or has an idea for an improvement for stuff that's under my responsibility since a good idea is a good idea, regardless of the source. Sometimes the best ideas come from other groups and the smart thing to do is to consider them without turf battles. It's just better for everyone. If someone finds a problem in my stuff it's doh, how did I miss that? Not stay out of my stuff and stick to your group.
@llevl289
@llevl289 2 года назад
Same. My manager is constantly suggesting that if we have an idea that's going to move the needle, irrespective of which group it's in, go for it. This is in stark contrast to the silo'ed dinosaur I used to work at, where everything took an act of God to get done.

The idea that one might be able to "drop out" a modular motor-inverter package from a standard S, and "drop in" the Plaid drivetrain might be a hot-rodder's dream. Find a wrecked Plaid, buy a used S, put the parts together and update the software, and viola, you have a new car. Of course, it would never be that simple, but commonality of modules and interchangeable suspension pickup points on the frame castings could make multiple variants very easy to assemble at the factory level. It will be interesting over time to see what "hot rodders" do when virtually all cars become electric. How about a Factory Five Cobra kit with a 1000+ horsepower plaid drivetrain and NMC battery.

The one question I have has never been addressed. The most expensive part of the EV is the battery. My question is, how well is it protected from ground debris? In states like Montana, driving, especially during winter months is very hard on the bottom of vehicles. Just driving up my driveway requires turning off of a major highway through a snowbank created by highway plows, usually at a higher velocity because cars are often behind you and impatient. Can you go over how well it is protected? Am I going to have to buy or make off road skid plates to protect the battery?

@@AudiTTQuattro2003 There have been reports of damage caused by debris from an accident that happened directly in front of an EV and it bounced up hitting the battery and causing 20k + worth of damage because they have to replace the entire battery. 6 inches of clearence on a SUV is not enough IMO others like Subaru have 10, add that to the battery being under the car, is not a great idea unless you properly protect it. But I do understand where Elon is coming from. Having the lower center of gravity not only improves handling but keeps the vehicle from rolling which we all know is priority for Elon, that is to say safety.

I don't know about the Plaid, but the old Model S had layered titanium and steel armor. You can find videos on RU-vid about the tests they did with it, they are pretty cool. I think it would protect you even from landmines. The 3&Y doesn't have the armor, they instead made the batteries much less likely to catch fire in case of physical damage. Normal debris shouldn't hurt it though, but if you hit something hard that could be expensive. On the other hand the car itself is a lot cheaper this way. My guess it the Plaid doesn't have the armor either, more to save weight than to save money.

if properly assembled, it causes no trouble. But even steel in steel toe links corrode solid unless you soak them in wax or put covers over them. Best for any newer vehicle is to protect all these spots with a suitable anti corrosion compound. But as most new buyers only drive these 1 to 3 years, they don't bother. And therefore the factories do neither.

My issues with big castings, it's that they aren't the best for the mainstream, if they need to repair the car. Make it an expensive process, and making the car more easily totaled. You've that happening many super cars using monocoque tubs. If it's slightly damaged the car can get totaled being a structural structure.
@lapin46
@lapin46 2 года назад
as it is a die cast part, it must not necessarily be expensive. If broken, unbolt it with its 6-10 bolts and bolt in the new one. I expect this part to be less than $100 to make. It is like a mini giga-casting. Sandcasting is way more expensive as it needs many steps. Build up the wax core, dress it with the vents, put it into the cold, put sand around it, cast it, manually remove it from he sand box, remove all the vents, inspect and machine as wax and sand always distort. The die cast except the vents and fillers it comes out perfect in shape. Minimal machining required.

@@AudiTTQuattro2003 it depends on the car value and other damage. Dropping the rear frame does not take long. I guestimate that this takes less than 1h. By the time you crack that part the others bits of the car might not look good anymore anyhow. Exception might be a mighty big pot hole bending your suspension, but little else. In the Lotus world, you even do chassis swaps. It is a lot of labor, but totally DIY or insurance pays for it. The factory even provides a chassis with the correct VIN number. You need to send them the VIN number bearing cut-off piece of the chassis, though.

One thing that Elon said that always stuck with me when he spoke about engineering ethos at Tesla. Everyone is a chief engineer; anyone can speak to anyone in the company, it doesn’t matter what department or level. And the goal is to optimise the WHOLE product, not just your specific part. So, when you are working on optimising your part, if it hinders another part, then you’re not optimising the whole product. Elon gets a lot of flack for not being a real engineer; or not actually designing anything. Well, for one, he is a real engineer and does design some things, but no one ever thinks he designs and engineers the whole entire car or rocket - what matter is that he creates an environment where it’s all about engineering the optimum product and not about corporate politics or traditional “this department does only this, and that department does only that” - that’s the genius and, quite frankly, balls to want to do that. Pretty impressive what Tesla has done and will undoubtedly do.
@kaasman78
@kaasman78 2 года назад
Well in the end, Elon wanted to start an EV company. In a market where there wasn't a successful newcomer in decades. So just doing what others are doing will lead to guaranteed failure. Learning to do everything together as a small/dedicated/talented team, working with low budgets and putting in crazy hours, made their successful culture. Tesla's developing so fast and frantically, like they're trying to outpace the devil itself. At this rate they will reach wizardry status compared to all others within the decade.
