How to replace the rear struts on a Toyota or Lexus sedan.
Procedure is similar for the Lexus ES300, ES330 and ES350, Toyota Camry, Solara, Avalon, Corolla and maybe the Yaris.
The rear MacPherson struts are attached to the knuckle via two 19mm bolts. The stabilizer linkage, ABS wire and brake line need to be disconnected from the strut to free it at the bottom.
To access the three 12mm bolts holding the strut to the body, the rear seat must be removed. The bottom cushion pulls up, while the seat back is bolted in with 4 12mm bolts. Removing the side panels and deck tray is not required.
Having a 12mm ratcheting wrench helps with accessing the strut bolts. Air tools are not required but make the job a lot easier.

Thanks for saving me a ton of money doing all (4) on our 2005 ES330. Very well done. For video couple items I noticed (for me) - 1) seatbelt clips can be easily popped out by inserting small blade screwdriver through hole in backside of clip, then popping clip up. 2) Was able to remove just the bottom bolt of caliper and flip up enough while leaving on rotor to remove large bolts from strut bracket.

I just replaced struts/swaybar links/brakes and rotors on my 2008 Lexus es350. This job was definitely tedious, but it is definitely something most backyard mechanics can do. The worst issues I had was how seized all of my old sway are links were.

The Sway Bar Links often r rusted and the hex 5mm slot (which is used to hold the bolt from spinning when u loosen the nut ) will Just STRIP OUT. IF U FIND THIS sometimes the vice grips will fit and grip. But I've Cut the bolt off with a Swazall and it's worked great. U will usually have to put new sway bar links in anyways. So it doesn't matter if u destroy it. $8-20 each on amaz... And the strut is being thrown away so u really only need to cut it off at the Sway Bar End. I've done this probably 3 or 4 times on es330 , camry v6, and rx350.

No, you can work around the brakes, as per this video. Just be really careful with that ABS wire.

I finished them yesterday and they went very smoothly. A lot faster than the fronts. Mainly because the sway bar links had been replaced once already. The fronts were not and the allen socket was completely stripped out. Luckily I ordered all 8 pieces (four struts and 4 sway bar links) off ebay for 315 bucks, free shipping. Between that and your videos, I might have put 1000 bucks in my pocket!!

Great job. The timing could not have been better, I just took out my rear seat yesterday to tackle the rear strut noises I've had all winter. One thing that I found helpful is to take out the C pillar trim pieces and then the parcel shelf, to remove any obstructions in the way of the top strut nuts.

Thanks. How did you remove the seat buckle assembly? I saw one big bolt but with no easy access no matter if you removed the C pillar trims or parcel shelf. I was able to get at the strut nuts with a 12mm wrench and it worked without taking off those pieces. I didn't want to mess around too much near those side airbags.

Yes, my 2005 ES has the seat buckle sitting right on top of the strut as you saw in the video.

I just started doing this on a 1994 Camry. Someone stripped the bolt on the passenger side of the rear sway bar links. It wasn't even tightened all the way. I could hear it clicking while test driving. I saw your method for holding the bolt with a pair of vice grips. I tried that. It isn't too loose or unscrewed so it isn't out far enough to grab on the back side. The inside of the 5mm hex bolt is rounded out on the inside. Any other ideas on how to get the bolt out?

Grind it off and get a new sway bar link....vice grips and impact damaged mine and I eventually had to replace it. See my stabilizer link video.

That power steering pivot bolt is in there really tight against the fender liner. Try removing the dog-bone engine mount and its assembly to access the power steering bolts from the top of the engine. you did a nice job with the video and working clean. You did not mention anything about the sensors which is the most important and most expensive part of the job. anyone who uses you video as a learning tool will be very disappointed when they break the delicate two wires on a sensor!!

Great video. Help me out a lot. I ended up breaking one of the seat belt clips because I didn't realize that there's a hole on the back of them that I can insert a small screwdriver in to press the tab that releases the clip.

This is another fantastic DIY video that you've done. I have a 2005 ES330 with AVS suspension. Planning to replace all 4 struts and springs with KYB quick strut kits. I'd recommend sealed like the originals. Much less maintenance. I personally can think of better things to do than having to grease end links.

Hi Speedkar99, I have Lexus 2008 RX350. Just replaced rear strut. The boot is one piece with strut mount. The boot I bought from Autozone and its just a boot. Do you know how can I replace the boot? I saw one video where a guy cut off rubber part of the mount assy and strapped with tie-wrap. Can you help me on this?Thank you

3:17 our Lexus has wires that go down into the strut? I haven’t seen that in any photo or video…also, did you undo the nut that holds the bracket in front so you can get to the three bolts for the top of the strut?

That wire is for the electronic variable suspension (AVS)

Spot on video. I have yet to do this but I did replace the rear brake pads and I have had the back seat out to put in a sub in my 2003 ES300. This looks like the same car. I thought the back seat was rather easy to take out. Do rear struts make noise when they are going bad? I hate to buy them if that is not the problem. I hear a noise from the rear when I go over a bump. Like a clacking noise.

Great video! How are those KYBs holding up compared to the originals? I've heard they are not usually as good. What do you think about buying used OEM? The originals ones on my es300 lasted over 200k but now need to be replaced. Thinking about going used.

An import car shop told me they've had bad luck with KYB mounts and recommended the much more expensive Toyota brand. I can't imagine how Toyota would be that much better...especially the rears.

+Rafi Khan I don't think so, those strut bolts are on tight, a 6 gallon pancake compressor might not have enough push to knock them loose. You can always resort to using a strong breaker bar. I use a 25 gallon campbell hausfeld compressor with a 1/2" drive impact gun.

Rob H I fixed that on mine by switching gas stations. No guarantee, but given that I haven't seen the code in over 2 years, you might just try that first! I was told that, as the cats get older, excessive ethanol (or even a little water in the tank at the station) causes that. I figured I had nothing to lose by just trying some different gas, and sure enough...

Rob H You can also try fuel system cleaners, reset the light and see if it returns. Next, diagnose the oxygen sensors to make sure they're reading properly.

I,m guessing they are factory kwv rear struts , the ones on my car have no visible markings , i found a pair on ebay comple for 120.00 BUT they dont specify brand ...

Finn Green Rear disc brakes obviously have more braking power than the drums, which is why you'll find them on higher end trims. I find them easier to service than the drum brakes where you'd have to be dealing with pesky springs and clips. The obvious downsides are it being open to the weather (wet brakes) and brake dust.

There should be a button on the center console near the gear shifter to adjust the shocks. You can also pop the hood and look at the top of the strut mounts, if there's wires going in, then its got AVS. If its just 3 nuts, then its the regular suspension.

True! But I've already taken the Solara apart so many times I can probably access the top of the rear struts faster than fidgeting with the rear seat in the Lexus. In the Solara you have to remove the rear seat cushion, seat back, rear side trim (arm rest sides), B and C pillar trims, rear package tray and then the top of the struts!

do you really have to remove the caliper, or are you doing that for easier access to the bolts?

+Tripp McDavid Not mandatory, as long as you have enough room to access the bolts. Support the hub when the strut is gone so the brake line and ABS wire don't pull.

Hi, i have a 2005 es330 non-sport edition which i believe is equipped with AVS. Looking at following link can you tell what the SET includes? Does it come with coil spring and boot already assembled? +Adriana Khatami Nope, all it comes with is the strut and the nut. OEM struts don't come pre-assembled. AVS struts are very expensive. If you don't need the adjustable suspension, others have gotten away with replacing it with non-AVS components without any ill function to vehicle's electronics.
